The concept of dissociation refers to disruptions in attentional control. Attentional control is an executive function. Few studies have add … nces Scale Taxon. However, the two other subscales of the Dissociative Experiences Scale, measuring depersonalization and absorption, were unrelated to executive functioning. Our findings suggest that a failure to inhibit previous responses might contribute to the pathological memory manifestations of dissociation.

Three studies examine the role that provocative visual stimuli have in eliciting anxiety reactions in people with agoraphobia. Such stimuli elicit more anxiety in agoraphobic patients than control subjects. The effect of visual stimulation appears to be specific: (1) non-visual stimulation is without comparable effect; (2) both control and agoraphobic groups show similar effects of visual stimulation on another reaction such as headache. The anxiety effects of visual stimuli are correlated with the extent to which subjects experience depersonalization and somatic symptoms of agoraphobia, but n…

After the changes in DSM-5, dissociative subtype was added to post-traumatic stress disorder. That caused a necessity for a scale to measure the mentioned change. A scale named Dissociative Subtype of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (DSPS) was developed to measure this subtype and help the diagnosis. The purpose of this study is to adapt the Dissociative Subtype of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder to Turkish and examine its reliability and validity. The Dissociative Subtype of PTSD (DSPS) was translated into Turkish. DSPS, Turkish forms of The Posttraumatic Diagnostic Scale and Dissociative Exper

Sixty inpatients, aged 7 to 15 years, with obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) have been examined. The inclusion criteria comprised diagnostic ICD-10 criteria for OCD (F42), schizophrenia childhood type (F20.83) and neurotic-like schizophrenia (F21.3). Patients with organic CNS disorder signs and marked somatic pathology were excluded from the study. According to clinical features of the disease and its course (disease progressiveness), three OCD types have been determined: OCD in the structure of affective and neurotic-like spectra disorders (type 1); OCD in the structure of paranoid spectru

A case of chronic intoxication by trichloroethylene--it is a liquid generally used as a fat solvent--is described in a young man aged eighteen who had been inhaling it for months while he was doing his military service. Hallucinatory symptoms--visual as well as verbal ones--appear over a slightly confusional basis but he also suffers from several psychotic symptoms like the feeling of a threat to his ego, depersonalization and some others. He is explored and evaluated by means of specific tests for psychotics--such as the Frankfurt psychopathological inventory which was introduced in Spain by …

INTRODUCTION: Hallucinations that involve shifts in the subjectively experienced location of the self, have been termed "out-of-body experiences" (OBEs). Early psychiatric accounts cast OBEs as a specific instance of depersonalisation and derealisation disorder (DPD-DR). However, during feelings of alienation and lack of body realism in DPD-DR the self is experienced within the physical body. Deliberate forms of "disembodiment" enable humans to imagine another's visuo-spatial perspective taking (VPT), thus, if a strong relationship between deliberate and spontaneous forms of disembodiment coul

INTRODUCTION: Déjà vu is typically a transient mental state in which a novel experience feels highly familiar. Although extensively studied in relation to temporal lobe epilepsy as part of simple partial seizures, déjà vu has been less studied in other clinical populations. A recent review of temporal lobe epilepsy suggested a possible link between clinical levels of anxiety and debilitating déjà vu, indicating further research is required. Here, for the first time in the literature, we present a case study of a young man with anxiety and depersonalisation who reported experiencing persistent

Psychological trauma can have devastating consequences on emotion regulatory capacities and lead to dissociative processes that provide subjective detachment from overwhelming emotional experience during and in the aftermath of trauma. Dissociation is a complex phenomenon that comprises a host of symptoms and factors, including depersonalization, derealization, time distortion, dissociative flashbacks, and alterations in the perception of the self. Dissociation occurs in up to two thirds of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The neurobiology of traumatic dissociation has demo…

Hoigne's syndrome is currently considered a pseudoanaphylactic or pseudoallergic reaction following intramuscular and aqueous procaine penicillin administration. This disorder is characterized predominantly by neuropsychiatric alterations including severe psychomotor agitation with confusion, sensations of disintegration, depersonalization, and derealization, perceived changes of body shape, visual and auditory hallucinations, panic-like anxiety including fear of death as well as alterations of consciousness and seizures. Beside the "classic" immediate manifestation of Hoigne's syndrome, subac…

Fear plays a central role in attachment theory and disorganization in adulthood. Fear associated with traumatic memories interferes with resolution of trauma resulting in disorganized mental states, captured as unresolved/disorganized speech surrounding loss and/or abuse in the Adult Attachment Interview. Mothers who are unresolved experience fear stemming from traumatic memories and display frightening behavior towards their infants. Disorganization can predispose individuals to dissociative mental processes, including altered states (absorption), PTSD, and depersonalization. Social psycholog…

In the psychiatric literature, panic attacks have been considered as part of the clinical manifestations of anxiety neurosis, agoraphobia, functional cardiovascular disturbances, and the phobic depersonalization syndrome. Even though recurrent spontaneous panic attacks are described in these entities, the importance ascribed to them has been minor one. Therefore, panic attacks are poorly understood from a psycho-physio pathological point of view. In the past years, new trends in the nosology of psychiatric disorders have grouped the recurrent spontaneous panic attacks under the heading "panic …
