RATIONALE: Postpartum depression (PMD) occurs in roughly 10 % of postpartum women and negatively impacts the mother and her offspring, but there are few placebo-controlled studies of antidepressant treatment in this population.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was this study is to compare the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) sertraline to placebo for treating PMD.
METHODS: This was a single-center, 6-week, randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial of sertraline with a 1-week placebo lead-in. The participants (n = 38) were women with depression onset within 3 months of delivery; a

Demographic, psychosocial and medical risk factors for postpartum depression (PPD) were studied prospectively in a community cohort of 288 Israeli women. An Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score of > or = 10 at 6 weeks postpartum was the criterion for PPD. Psychosocial risk factors were found to be the most potent. Lack of social support, marital disharmony, depressive symptoms during pregnancy, history of emotional problems and prolonged infant health problems were most predictive of PPD. The major role of psychosocial factors in PPD was similar to that found in other countries. The resu

It remains inconclusive whether postpartum depression (PPD) and depression with onset outside the postpartum period (MDD) are genetically distinct disorders. We aimed to investigate whether polygenic risk scores (PGSs) for major mental disorders differ between PPD cases and MDD cases in a nested case-control study of 50,057 women born from 1981 to 1997 in the iPSYCH2015 sample in Demark. We identified 333 women with first-onset postpartum depression (PPD group), who were matched with 993 women with first-onset depression diagnosed outside of postpartum (MDD group), and 999 female population co

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common and serious psychiatric disorder occurring during the perinatal period, frequently accompanied by anxiety symptoms and associated with long-term adverse consequences for both maternal health and infant development. This study aimed to compare and rank the effectiveness of psychological interventions for PPD with respect to short-term anxiety, short-term depressive symptoms, and long-term depressive outcomes.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, as well as Web of Science were thoroughly searched until May 6, 2025, for randomized control

IMPORTANCE: Racial, ethnic, and income disparities in perinatal depression prevalence and treatment are partially driven by social determinants of health. Effective treatments addressing these determinants are needed.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether enhanced group prenatal care (eGPC) outperforms enhanced individual prenatal care (eIPC) for reducing perinatal depressive symptoms.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial was conduced in 10 Medicaid-serving clinics in California's San Joaquin Valley, enrolling English- or Spanish-speaking Medicaid-eligible pregnant ind

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common perinatal disorder that affects maternal and child health. Although vitamin D deficiency has been linked to depressive symptoms, the dose‑response relationship between perinatal serum 25(OH)D and PPD and predictive value remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the dose‑response relationship between perinatal 25(OH)D and PPD and evaluate its predictive value.
METHODS: A total of 326 perinatal women were enrolled, PPD was assessed within 6 weeks postpartum, and serum 25(OH)D was measured at 24-48 hours after delivery. Analyses included bas

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common complication following childbirth, affecting approximately 10-20% of women. Despite its prevalence, PPD remains underdiagnosed and insufficiently addressed in routine perinatal care, particularly in large cohorts from German-speaking countries. The study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of biological and psychosocial risk factors across the perinatal period that contribute to the onset of PPD.
METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted via an online survey with nearly 1,000 recent mothers from Germany, Austria, and Sw

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious and common psychiatric disorder that affects nearly 20% childbearing women. In recent years, growing attention has been directed towards the potential health implications of exposure to household environmental pollutants. This study aimed to explore the association between housing conditions and PPD among Taiwanese women.
METHODS: This study used data from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study (TBCS), a nationwide, population-based cohort. A total of 17,981 mothers enrolled in the TBCS were included in the analysis. At six months postpartum, struct

BACKGROUND: Postpartum mother-child bonding is crucial for maternal mental health and child development, with significant influences beginning in the prenatal period. The aims of this study were to examine if prenatal depressive symptoms and prenatal self-efficacy could predict postpartum bonding impairments and to determine if prenatal self-efficacy buffers the relationship between prenatal depressive symptoms and postpartum maternal bonding.
METHODS: The final sample analysed was 189 expectant first-time mothers, who took part in a longitudinal prospective study. The Edinburgh Postnatal Dep

Guided by the communicated sense-making model, we describe the results of an analysis of interviews with 15 Black women about their experiences with postpartum depression (PPD). The findings indicate that the women made sense of their experience using three categories of metaphors: (1) mobility, (2) cultural expectations, and (3) social support. These categories of metaphors provide evidence that the discourse of motherhood as distressing is expressed in the narratives of Black women with PPD, even as they seek to fulfill the demands of the discourse of motherhood as intensive. The metaphors a

BACKGROUND: Some women struggle with mental health problems such as postpartum depression (PPD) or postpartum anxiety disorder (PAD) after giving birth. This can have a negative impact on the new mother, the infant, and the whole family. However, many women experiencing PPD and/or PAD go unrecognized and untreated. Since appropriate support is essential, efforts should be made to facilitate women's help-seeking behavior. The purpose of this study was to improve the mental health of postpartum women by understanding their specific support preferences. To this end, the preferences for counseling

Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a common adverse pregnancy outcome, but the extent to which PPD correlates with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the offspring is unclear. Therefore, we examined if children of mothers who experienced PPD are at risk for developing ADHD and how this association may be modified by the child's sex, race/ethnicity, and gestational age at delivery. A retrospective cohort study of singleton-born children aged 3-12 years and delivered in Kaiser Permanente Southern California hospitals between 01/01/2010-12/31/2019 (n = 229,860) was performed using ele

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depression significantly affects maternal mental health and family dynamics. Effective and safe treatments are crucial to enhance the quality of life for affected women. This study assesses the effectiveness and safety of combining sertraline with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in treating postpartum depression.
METHODS: We recruited 152 postpartum depression patients at West China Hospital between May 2020 and October 2023, dividing them into sertraline-only (n=61) and combined treatment (n=91) groups. We evaluated treatment outcomes after 8 weeks, compari

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal depression is an important cause of maternal and infant morbidity. Rates of perinatal depression amongst pregnant and postpartum women in Botswana are not well-documented. We examined the prevalence of symptoms of depression and potential associated factors among pregnant and postpartum women participating in a sexually transmitted infection screening study. METHODS: We conducted a repeated time-point cross-sectional analysis of the Maduo study, a non-randomized clinic-controlled trial evaluating the benefit of antenatal Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae s

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects 174 million women worldwide and is characterized by profound sadness, anxiety, irritability, and debilitating fatigue, which disrupt maternal caregiving and the mother-infant relationship. Limited pharmacological interventions are currently available. Our understanding of the neurobiological pathophysiology of PPD remains incomplete, potentially hindering the development of novel treatment strategies. Recent hypotheses suggest that PPD is driven by a complex interplay of hormonal changes, neurotransmitter imbalances, inflammation, genetic factors, psychosoci

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depression is one of the most common complications after childbearing. Urinary incontinence is a frequent symptom during pregnancy and the postnatal period, often being the first time that women experience it. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the evidence on the association between urinary incontinence and postpartum depression and to assess whether this association becomes weaker at 6 months after childbirth.
DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were searched from inception to December 26, 2023.

Many women experience psychological and emotional challenges during their transition to becoming a working mother. Postpartum depression (PPD) is one common, salient aspect of motherhood that can serve as a work-life shock event and profoundly shape women's work and nonwork lives yet has evaded discussion in the organizational sciences. Taking a grounded theory approach, we interviewed 41 women who experienced PPD as well as key informants who provided additional insights about PPD (e.g., an obstetrician, women working for organizations that support postpartum health). Our analysis highlights

BACKGROUND: The study aim was to describe the incidence of depression, anxiety, perinatal-post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and their co-occurrences in the early postpartum period in a low-resource OB/GYN clinic serving majority Medicaid-eligible persons. We hypothesized that postpartum persons screening positive for depression will have an increased risk of a positive screen for anxiety and perinatal PTSD.
METHODS: A retrospective study of postpartum persons receiving care in Baton Rouge, Louisiana was conducted using responses abstracted from the electronic medical record (EMR) of the
