Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral disease endemic in Eurasia. The virus is mainly transmitted to humans via ticks and occasionally via the consumption of unpasteurized milk products. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported an increase in TBE incidence over the past years in Europe as well as the emergence of the disease in new areas. To better understand this phenomenon, we investigated the drivers of TBE emergence and increase in incidence in humans through an expert knowledge elicitation. We listed 59 possible drivers grouped in eight domains and elicited forty

This study describes preliminary results of an investigation of RMSF in Arizona associated with the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. High numbers of dogs and heavy infestations of ticks created a situation leading to human disease.

Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever. In order to explore the occurrence of C. burnetii in ticks, samples were collected from horses, dogs and humans living in a Cuban occidental community. The species most commonly recovered were Amblyomma mixtum (67%), Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (27%) and Dermacentor nitens (6%). Specific IS1111 PCR and amplicon sequencing allowed the identification of C. burnetii DNA in A. mixtum collected from a domestic horse. These findings, for first time in Cuba, indicate the need for an in-depth assessment of the C. burnetii occurrence in hosts and h…

Over the last 35 years most parts of Czechoslovakia have experienced Q fever. Of particular note were outbreaks in factories processing imported cotton, wool and hides that had been contaminated in their countries of origin. Some areas of the southern part of Central Slovakia became a natural focus of Q fever with the Dermacentor marginatus tick being the main vector of coxiellae. Currently, Coxiella (C.) burnetii infection appears to be dormant in the country since only sporadic cases are encountered. Cattle vaccination practiced since 1980 may have contributed to the decreasing incidence of …

Colorado tick fever, also known as mountain fever and mountain tick fever, is a well-described, viral, tick-borne disease common to the Rocky Mountain region of the United States and Canada. The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, is the primary vector. The triad of high fever, severe myalgia, and headache is typical, but not specific. Although a self-limited disease in most cases, severe complications may occur. PCR techniques have been developed that allow the diagnosis to be established from the first day of symptoms. Ribavirin may merit consideration in the appropriate clinica…

Ixodid ticks and fleas parasitize wild felids and can transmit pathogens of veterinary and public health concern. We identified ixodid and flea species collected from sympatric South Texas bobcats, L. rufus, and ocelots, L. pardalis. Greater diversities of ixodids were found on both felids than in previous reports, with seven species in three genera on L. rufus and six species in three genera on L. pardalis. We report first findings of tropical horse tick, Dermacentor nitens, on L. rufus in Texas, and Ixodes keiransi on both felids in Texas. Although false cayenne tick, Amblyomma tenellum, nym…

INTRODUCTION: Ticks harbour complex RNA viromes containing both confirmed pathogens and numerous viruses with unknown transmission routes. Defining the diversity and ecological correlates of these viral communities is critical for assessing potential risks to human and animal health.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to characterise the diversity, geographic structure, and ecological determinants of RNA viromes in six dominant tick species across Inner Mongolia, China.
METHODS: We performed meta-transcriptomic sequencing on Ixodes persulcatus, Dermacentor nuttalli, Dermacentor sinicus, Hyalomma s…

However, the distribution of rickettsiae in ticks and fleas in the border region of northwestern China have not been systematically studied to date.
RESULTS: A total of 982 ticks (Rhipicephalus turanicus, Dermacentor marginatus, D. nuttalli and Haemaphysalis punctata) and 5052 fleas (18 flea species from 14 species of wild mammals) were collected in ten and five counties, respectively, of Xinjiang …

Rickettsioses are caused by obligate intracellular bacteria within the genus Rickettsia, mainly transmitted by arthropods. Until recently, Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) caused by Rickettsia conorii was considered the only tick-borne rickettsiosis in Europe. However, 'new' TBR have been described in Europe during last years. For instance, other subspecies such as R. conorii caspia and R. conorii israelensis have been involved in MSF. Dermacentor-borne necrosis erythema and lymphadenopathy/tick-borne lymphadenopathy (DEBONEL/TIBOLA) cases caused by Rickettsia slovaca, Rickettsia raoultii, an…

Six new cell lines were established in continuous culture from embryonic tissues of ixodid ticks. Four were from Dermacentor variabilis and two from D. parumapertus. The cells are mostly fibroblastic and diploid. Mosquito-borne viruses (Chikungunya, O'nyong, yellow fever, and St. Louis encephalitis) as well as tick-borne ones (Langat, Powassan, Colorado tick fever, Kemerovo, and Sawgrass) replicated in certain of these cell lines, but a nonvector-borne flavivirus, Modoc, did not. An underscribed virus from D. occidentalis ticks, which could not be isolated in Vero cells or newborn mice, was re…

Females and males of ixodid ticks (Ixodes and Dermacentor) infected parenterally with the tick-borne encephalitis virus at the adult or nymphal phase and containing the virus in the saliva are able to transmit the agent in the first minutes after the bite of the sensitive animal host. Preservation of the cement conus produced by saliva in the animal skin enhances the infection intensity because the quantity of the virus in the conus is comparable with that in the tick's body. The virus quantity in the fluid saliva, excreted by I. persulcatus females and measured during different periods of blo…

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases are of substantial concern worldwide in both humans and animals. Several hard tick species are of medical and veterinary interest in Europe, and changes in the range of tick species can affect the spread of zoonotic pathogens. The aim of the present study was to map the current prevalence and distribution pattern of ticks and related tick-borne pathogens in Latvia, a Baltic state in northern Europe.
METHODS: Nearly 4600 Ixodes ricinus, I. persulcatus and Dermacentor reticulatus tick samples were collected in all regions of Latvia during 2017-2019 and were scree…

Ticks of the genus Dermacentor are known vectors of rickettsial pathogens in both the Old World and New World. In North America, Dermacentor variabilis and D. andersoni are vectors of Rickettsia rickettsii, while in Europe, D. marginatus and D. reticulatus transmit R. slovaca and R. raoultii, respectively. Neither the presence of R. slovaca in the Americas nor the ability of American tick species to maintain this pathogen have been reported. Here we describe detection of Rickettsia genetically identical to R. slovaca in D. variabilis, its molecular characterization, assessment of pathogenicity…
