Occupational dermatitis from soldering flux among workers in the electronics industry.

Although numerous occupational irritants and allergens have been known to cause contact dermatitis in the electronics industry, soldering flux is seldom mentioned. Soldering flux used in the electronics industry can cause both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Irritant dermatitis is commoner than allergic contact dermatitis. Aminoethylethanolamine, a constituent of some fluxes, is a sensitizer. Dermatitis tends to start over the periungual area and spread to the finger shafts and sometimes the wrists. The use of cotton gloves by workers appeared to aggravate the problem. Prophylactic m

Impact of atopic dermatitis and loss-of-function mutations in the filaggrin gene on the development of occupational irritant contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) and loss-of-function mutations in the filaggrin gene (FLG) are both associated with chronic irritant contact dermatitis (ICD). As FLG mutations also are a major risk factor for AD, it is not clear whether FLG mutations are an independent risk factor for ICD or whether the risk is mediated by AD. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relative contribution and interaction of FLG mutations and AD in German patients with occupational ICD and controls (vocational school apprentices). METHODS: A total of 634 patients and 393 controls were genotyped for R501X, 2282del4,

Prevalence of Atopic Dermatitis Criteria among Textile Workers with Occupational Allergic Contact Dermatitis and Effects of Having Atopic Dermatitis on Contact Antigenic Diversity.

OBJECTIVES: Contact dermatitis (CD) is a common skin disease. Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) is the most frequently seen occupational skin disease and includes both occupational allergic CD (OACD) and occupational irritant CD (OICD). One of the most common sources of OACD is textile products. Individuals with atopic dermatitis (AD) have an increased risk for development of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). However, the role of AD in the etiopathogenesis of the development of OACD among textile industry workers is not well known. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevale

Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers/cosmetologists: retrospective analysis of north american contact dermatitis group data, 1994 to 2010.

BACKGROUND: European studies document that occupational contact dermatitis (CD) is common in hairdressers, but studies from North America are lacking. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of occupational CD among North American hairdressers/cosmetologists (HD/CS) and to characterize responsible allergens and irritants as well as their sources. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of patients patch tested by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group between 1994 and 2010 was conducted. RESULTS: Of 35,842 patients, 432 (1.2%) were HD/CS. Significantly, mos

Interventions and Implementation Strategies for Preventing Occupational Contact Dermatitis: A Scoping Review.

Numerous preventive measures for occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) have been evaluated, but their effectiveness varies, suggesting that contextual factors and corresponding implementation strategies are important. This scoping review aimed to identify preventive interventions for OCD and explore their implementation strategies and outcomes. We searched five databases (January 2000-May 2024) for studies on preventive interventions, scoping intervention content and implementation strategies. In total, 111 articles describing 79 interventions were included, which involved components of educat

[Allergy or atopy-occupational dermatitis is often more complex than initially thought].

A 58-year-old man who worked as varnisher and application technician for many years developed 4 months after changing employer and occupation (now working as plant operator for mortar bottling plants) vesicular hand eczema and eczema on his limbs for the first time. The patient underwent a tertiary individual prevention (TIP: an in-patient treatment financed by German statutory occupational accident insurance). The patient had pronounced atopic skin diathesis which, however, had never manifested itself in the form of eczema. Type IV hypersensitivity to epoxy resin and epoxy resin components wa

Outbreak of occupational allergic contact dermatitis from a smartphone screen protector glue.

BACKGROUND: Sensitization to acrylates is a concern in the occupational/environmental dermatology field. OBJECTIVE: To describe an occupational allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) outbreak from a smartphone screen protector glue. METHODS: Thirteen affected workers of a chain store selling phone screen protectors were investigated in five Spanish dermatology departments. The glue datasheet and label were assessed. A chemical analysis of the glue was performed. Based on this, some patients underwent additional testing. RESULTS: All patients (all female, mean age: 25) had severe fingertip dermat

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis: A 24-year, retrospective cohort study from Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD) in Turkey. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the epidemiologic profile of OACD in Turkey. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study on 294 patients with OACD among 2801 consecutively patch-tested patients in the Allergy Unit of the Dermatology Department of İstanbul Faculty of Medicine between 1996 and 2019. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of OACD was 10.5%, showing a male predominance. OACD was most frequently seen in construction workers (45.2%), followed by hairdressers, metalworkers, health care workers, and miscella

Causes of irritant contact dermatitis after occupational skin exposure: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is a major cause of occupational disease. The aim was to review the relation between exposure to occupational irritants and ICD and the prognosis of ICD. METHODS: Through a systematic search, 1516 titles were identified, and 48 studies were included in the systematic review. RESULTS: We found that the evidence for an association between ICD and occupational irritants was strong for wet work, moderate for detergents and non-alcoholic disinfectants, and strong for a combination. The highest quality studies provided limited evidence for an association

Dermatitis among workers in Ontario: results from the Occupational Disease Surveillance System.

OBJECTIVES: Dermatitis is the most common occupational skin disease, and further evidence is needed regarding preventable risk factors. The Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) derived from administrative data was used to investigate dermatitis risk among industry and occupation groups in Ontario. METHODS: ODSS cohort members were identified from Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) accepted lost time claims. A case was defined as having ≥2 dermatitis physician billing claims during a 12-month period within 3 years of cohort entry. A 3-year look-back period prior to cohort e

Evaluation of occupational allergic contact dermatitis and its related factors in Iran.

Background: Occupational contact dermatitis, especially in hand, is one of the most common occupational disorders. The present study aimed at evaluating patients with occupational allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) caused by common allergens based on occupation type and disease history. Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed at evaluating the data of the patients with probable diagnosis of ACD in Center for Research and Training in Skin Diseases and Leprosy (CRTSDL) in Iran. In the present study, 946 patients were assessed from different regions of Iran. One hundred fifty-one cases with posi

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from cinnamon including one case from airborne exposure.

BACKGROUND: The bark of the cinnamon tree is used as a spice; its flavour is from an essential oil containing mainly cinnamal. OBJECTIVE: To report new cases of occupational allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) from cinnamon and a novel case of airborne cinnamon contact allergy. METHODS: We examined the patient material of two dermatological clinics in Helsinki to find cinnamon contact allergic patients and review their clinical records. RESULTS: We found six patients with delayed contact allergy to cinnamon. In four patients, cinnamon was the main cause of occupational ACD. Three of them had
