[Follicular mucinosis secondary to captopril-induced photoallergy].

Captopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor which has been widely used as an antihypertensive agent and vasodilator. Although adverse skin effects occur in 10 % of patients prescribed this drug, there is little published data about photosensitivity. On the other hand, follicular mucinosis has been described in association with numerous processes, mainly lymphomas, lupus erythematosus and, less frequently, with photoinduced eruptions and drug reactions. We present the case of a female patient treated with captopril who developed an eruption in photoexposed areas. Histologically, the

[Gastric cancer associated with dermatomyositis accompanied by photoallergy].

A 62-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of a 5-month history of edematous erythema and itching on the face, upper chest, and upper extremities. The symptoms developed immediately after bathing in the sea. Dermatomyositis associated with photoallergy was diagnosed by skin and muscle biopsy. A search for malignancy revealed Borrmann 3 gastric cancer, and subtotal gastrectomy was performed. He has done well for 3 years and 8 months after the operation, but there has been no remission in the symptoms of dermatomyositis. Dermatomyositis associated with photoallergy has a higher incid

Photosensitivity: a current biological overview.

CONTEXT: The level of interest in photoirritation (phototoxicity) has increased because of the awareness among the scientific community of the increase in the UV portion of the solar spectrum reaching the earth. The need of new chemicals and drugs puts pressure on pre-test methods for side effects, especially interactive adverse effects with UV light. So pre-marketing clinical trials conducted before a new drug is licensed are essential, as such, at the early phases of the discovery process of the drug/chemical, developing an efficacious photosensitivity testing system is prudent to avoid such

Evaluation of ultraviolet-A protection by sunscreen agents using a mouse model of contact photoallergy.

This study was conducted to investigate in vivo evaluation of protectiveness by sunscreens in the UVA range using a mouse model of contact photoallergy (CPS) to 3,3',4',5-tetrachlorosalicylanilide (TCSA). Mice were sensitized with TCSA painting plus UVA irradiation (TCSA/UVA) on the abdomen and, 5 days later, challenged with TCSA/UVA on the earlobe. Each of four sunscreen agents, benzophenone-3, Parsol 1789, p-aminobenzoic acid, and 2-ethyl-hexyl-p-methoxycinnamate, was applied to the earlobes before irradiation. Their protective efficacy was evaluated in the degree of inhibition of both ear s

Drug-Induced Photosensitivity - a Continuing Diagnostic Challenge.

When taking different drugs, their possible side effects on the skin should be considered, including skin reactions connected to photosensitivity. This photosensitivity caused by drugs can appear as phototoxic reactions (which occur more often) or photoallergic reactions (which occur less often and include allergic mechanisms). The following drugs stand out as medications with a high photosensitivity potential: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cardiovascular drugs (such as amiodarone), phenothiazines (especially chlorpromazine), retinoids, antibiotics (sulfonamides, tetracyclines

Evaluation of the skin phototoxicity and photosensitivity of honeybee venom.

OBJECTIVE: Bee (Apis mellifera L.) venom (BV) has been used as a cosmetic ingredient owing to its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. The aim of this study was to assess the skin safety of BV. METHODS: For this purpose, skin phototoxicity and sensitization tests were conducted in healthy male Hartley guinea pigs. The animals were divided into three groups (n=5) for the phototoxicity test: G1 (negative control), G2 (BV gel treatment), and G3 (positive control). After specified treatments, the animals were irradiated with ultraviolet A (15 J/cm2 ). The photosensitivity tes

Photoallergic reaction to cyamemazine.

A 50-year-old man presented with a scaly erythema of the face, upper chest, forearms, and dorsum of the hands. He has been treated with cyamemazine for 6 months. Photopatch tests were performed and the patient was diagnosed with photoallergic reaction to cyamemazine. The drug was discontinued and a course of oral steroids was prescribed. The patient was advised to avoid light exposure. There has been no evidence of recurrence during a six-month follow-up period. Photoallergic reactions are much less frequent than phototoxic disorders. It is well known that several drugs including neuroleptics

Photodermatoses: classification, evaluation and management.

Photodermatoses are skin disorders induced or exacerbated by light. They can be broadly classified into four groups: (i) immunologically mediated photodermatoses (idioapathic); (ii) drug- and chemical-induced photosensitivity; (iii) defective DNA repair disorders; and (iv) photoaggravated dermatoses. The exact pathomechanism of those diverse skin reactions to light radiation remains unclear. Immunologically mediated photodermatoses are the most common dermatoses among all photosesnsitive disorders. The management of photodermatoses starts with clinical recognition of characteristic lesions loc

[Contact dermatitis caused by foods].

Cutaneous adverse reactions to foods and food additives are a growing public health problem which can occur both in the avocational and occupational settings. This article reviews different reaction patterns which can occur upon contact with foods and discusses some clinically important food-associated metal and fragrance allergens responsible for these adverse effects. As ultimately, education and guidance can minimize the morbidity of food allergy and enhance the quality of life of the affected individual; this article highlights this growing problem.

Eczematous Drug Eruptions.

Eczematous drug eruptions are a heterogenous group of skin reactions that resemble eczema both clinically and histologically. We reviewed the literature and cataloged the systemically administered medications that cause these eruptions, along with their characteristic clinical presentations. We identified three primary pathophysiologic etiologies: (1) cutaneous immunomodulation, (2) skin dehydration, and (3) delayed hypersensitivity. Notably, eczematous eruptions caused by altered immunity in the skin may be increasing in incidence as some responsible drugs, in particular biologic therapies (s

Skin diseases seen in Kazanchis health center.

Studies concerning the prevalence of skin diseases and the general dermatologic services in Ethiopia are limited. A total of 7760 patients with 9725 dermatological diseases were seen by a dermatovenereologist from September 1995 to August 1996 at Kazanchis Health center in Addis Ababa. Male to female ratio was 1.01:1.00. Three thousand eighteen (31.0%) of the total 9725 cases had prior evaluation by other health personnel, including doctors (but not dermatologists). Out of these cases, 2720 (90.1%) were misdiagnosed and mismanaged. This high percentage points to the need for further short-term

Structure-activity relationships and prediction of the phototoxicity and phototoxic potential of new drugs.

Relationships between the structure and properties of chemicals can be programmed into knowledge-based systems such as DEREK for Windows (DEREK is an acronym for "Deductive Estimation of Risk from Existing Knowledge"). The DEREK for Windows computer system contains a subset of over 60 rules describing chemical substructures (toxophores) responsible for skin sensitisation. As part of the European Phototox Project, the rule base was supplemented by a number of rules for the prospective identification of photoallergens, either by extension of the scope of existing rules or by the generation of ne
