Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory dermatologic condition in which erythema and itching develop on areas of the body with sebaceous glands, such as the scalp, face and chest. The inflammation is evoked directly by oleic acid, which is hydrolyzed from sebum by lipases secreted by skin microorganisms. Although the skin fungal genus, Malassezia, is thought to be the causative agent of SD, analysis of the bacterial microbiota of skin samples of patients with SD is necessary to clarify any association with Malassezia because the skin microbiota comprises diverse bacterial and fung

Seborrheic dermatitis is a subacute or chronic disease of the skin, affecting the seborrhea afflicted areas and presenting with erythema and desquamation. The inflammatory reaction towards the fungi Malassezia spp. is considered to have a basic etiologic connection with this disease. Taking into consideration the pathogenesis, treatment of the dermatitis should be directed towards eradication of Malassezia spp., reduction of the skin lipids, and suppression of the inflammatory response. A wide variety of agents presented in different forms--ointments, shampoos and drugs--can offer quick, safe

Seborrheic dermatitis is generally treated with topical steroids, antifungals, or both. This pilot study was undertaken to examine the possibility of tacrolimus as a useful therapy for seborrheic dermatitis. In a single-center, open-label study, 18 consecutive patients with seborrheic dermatitis were treated with 0.1% tacrolimus for a total of 28 days or until complete clearance occurred, if sooner. Of the patients, 11 (61%) showed 100% clearance of their seborrheic dermatitis; the remaining 7 patients showed 70% to 99% clearance. The most common side effects were mild local burning and irrita

We examined Propionibacterium acnes lipase in skin diseases and Unsei-in. Butyric acid production in axillary seborrheic dermatitis (ASD) was higher than in other dermatitis, and that in acne vulgaris (AV) was significantly higher than in controls. P. acnes lipase is the pathogenic factor in AV and fatty acids produced by lipase might be the pathogenic factor in ASD. Unsei-in suppressed P. acnes lipase probably because some ingredients have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities.

The purpose of this article is to review the phase II and phase III clinical trials with the new pharmaceutical gel form of flutrimazole. The aim of the phase II study was to determine the efficacy and tolerance of flutrimazole 1%, 2% and 4% gel when compared to placebo in the treatment of 80 patients with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis at a dose of three applications per week during one month. Flutrimazole 1% gel had a similar efficacy compared to the other studied concentrations and a superior efficacy when compared to placebo (p < 0.05). All treatments studied had an excellent tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a frequent complication of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Most studies examining the cause of SD have concentrated on the roles of Pityrosporum ovale and sebaceous lipids. Previous studies of skin surface lipid from patients with SD have produced conflicting results, with some authors reporting an abnormal lipid composition and others finding little or no abnormality.
METHODS: The composition of skin surface lipid was studied in 15 HIV-positive and 10 HIV-negative men with SD, in 14 HIV-positive men without SD, and in 16 unaffe

Two therapeutic regimens for seborrheic dermatitis in infancy were compared. Fifteen infants were treated with topical glucocorticosteroid (flumethasone pivalate 0.02 percent) and fifteen with aqueous solution of the staining agent eosin 2 percent. Following two days of treatment a similar degree of healing was noted in both groups, and after ten days almost complete healing of the lesions was observed in all of the infants.

Infantile seborrheic dermatitis (ISD), a disease occurring in the first months of life, is an erythematosquamous skin disease of unknown origin. This article presents results of microbial studies in 20 patients with ISD. Isolation of candida in a high percentage may indicate a primary role of this micro-organism in the etiology of this disease. It is striking that this disease often starts after disturbing the microbial colonization of the intestinal tract. Often ISD develops during the transition of breastfeeding to humanized cow milk.
