A perception that the feed grain basis of reduced-crude protein diets modifies the anabolic impact of insulin on the growth performance of broiler chickens.

This inherently speculative review provides a perception that the feed grain basis of a reduced-crude protein (CP) diets modifies the anabolic impact of insulin in broiler chickens for the first 21 to 28 days post-hatch. Insulin is a powerful anabolic hormone in non-ruminant, mammalian species; however, the importance of insulin in avian species is usually dismissed because broiler chickens are held to be hyperglycaemic and resistant to insulin. However, there are indications that embryonic and young birds are in fact sensitive to insulin and resistance to insulin develops with age. The growth

Adherence to the planetary health diet reduces dietary costs by 21% supporting affordable healthy eating among older adults in Iran.

Poor dietary patterns among older adults are significantly influenced by socioeconomic status (SES) and food prices, impacting both diet quality and food choice. This study examines how dietary costs relate to the Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI) and assesses the role of SES in Iran's elderly population. In this cross-sectional study, 398 elderly individuals from southern Tehran were sampled. Dietary data were collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and adherence to the PHDI was evaluated based on EAT-Lancet guidelines. Food costs were derived from the Iranian Statistics Ce

The galectin-3 inhibitor selvigaltin reduces liver inflammation and fibrosis in a high fat diet rabbit model of metabolic-associated steatohepatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Galectin-3 is a pro-fibrotic β-galactoside binding lectin highly expressed in fibrotic liver and implicated in hepatic fibrosis. Selvigaltin (previously known as GB1211) is a novel orally active galectin-3 small molecule inhibitor that has high affinity for galectin-3 (human KD = 25 nM; rabbit KD = 12 nM) and high oral bioavailability in rabbits and man. In this study the efficacy of selvigaltin was investigated in a high fat diet (HFD) rabbit model of metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). METHODS: Male New Zealand White rabbits were individually caged under standard cond

Berberis microphylla G. Forst Intake Reduces the Cardiovascular Disease Plasmatic Markers Associated with a High-Fat Diet in a Mice Model.

Polyphenols are bioactive substances that participate in the prevention of chronic illnesses. High content has been described in Berberis microphylla G. Forst (calafate), a wild berry extensively distributed in Chilean-Argentine Patagonia. We evaluated its beneficial effect through the study of mouse plasma metabolome changes after chronic consumption of this fruit. Characterized calafate extract was administered in water, for four months, to a group of mice fed with a high-fat diet and compared with a control diet. Metabolome changes were studied using UHPLC-DAD-QTOF-based untargeted metabolo

Betaine Reduces Lipid Anabolism and Promotes Lipid Transport in Mice Fed a High-Fat Diet by Influencing Intestinal Protein Expression.

Betaine is more efficient than choline and methionine methyl donors, as it can increase nitrogen storage, promote fat mobilisation and fatty acid oxidation and change body fat content and distribution. Lipid is absorbed primarily in the small intestine after consumption, which is also the basis of lipid metabolism. This study was conducted to establish a mouse model of obesity in Kunming mice of the same age and similar body weight, and to assess the effect of betaine on the intestinal protein expression profile of mice using a proteomic approach. Analysis showed that betaine supplementation r

Spondias purpurea L. Bark Extract Protects against Oxidative Stress and Reduces Hypercholesterolemia in Mice Fed High-Fat Diet.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Oxidative stress plays a key role in the initiation and progression of metabolic diseases, including obesity. Preventing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage to macromolecules is a beneficial strategy for reducing comorbidities associated with obesity. Fruits from the Spondias genus are known for their antioxidant activity, but they are not available year-round due to their seasonality. In this context, we investigated the antioxidant activity and identified the chemical constituents of the aqueous extract of the stem bark of Spondias purpurea L. (EBSp). Additionall

Lupeol reduces M1 macrophage polarization to attenuate immunologic dissonance and fatty acid deposition in rats with diet-induced metabolic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate whether lupeol could inhibit the inflammatory mediators associated with the regulation of macrophage phenotypes and functions in rats with diet-induced metabolic syndrome (MS). METHODS: Forty specific-pathogen-free Sprague Dawley rats were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 10 weeks to establish an MS model. Lupeol was prepared and administered to the rats intraperitoneally at 20, 50, or 100 mg/kg (the lupeol 20 mg/kg, lupeol 50 mg/kg, and lupeol 100 mg/kg groups respectively). After 28 days of continuous intraperitoneal administration, rats were anesthe

N-acetylcysteine reduces addiction-like behaviour towards high-fat high-sugar food in diet-induced obese rats.

Compulsive forms of eating displayed by some obese individuals share similarities with compulsive drug-taking behaviour, a hallmark feature of substance use disorder. This raises the possibility that drug addiction treatments may show utility in the treatment of compulsive overeating. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is a cysteine pro-drug which has experienced some success in clinical trials, reducing cocaine, marijuana and cigarette use, as well as compulsive behaviours such as gambling and trichotillomania. We assessed the impact of NAC on addiction-like behaviour towards highly palatable food in a r

Genetic deletion of soluble 5'-nucleotidase II reduces body weight gain and insulin resistance induced by a high-fat diet.

We previously investigated whether inhibition of AMP-metabolizing enzymes could enhance AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation in skeletal muscle for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Soluble 5'-nucleotidase II (NT5C2) hydrolyzes IMP and its inhibition could potentially lead to a rise in AMP to activate AMPK. In the present study, we investigated effects of NT5C2 deletion in mice fed a normal-chow diet (NCD) or a high-fat diet (HFD). On a NCD, NT5C2 deletion did not result in any striking metabolic phenotype. On a HFD however, NT5C2 knockout (NT5C2-/-) mice displayed reduced body/fat w

Maternal Soluble Fiber Diet during Pregnancy Changes the Intestinal Microbiota, Improves Growth Performance, and Reduces Intestinal Permeability in Piglets.

Increasing evidence suggests that maternal diet during pregnancy modifies an offspring's microbiota composition and intestinal development in a long-term manner. However, the effects of maternal soluble fiber diet during pregnancy on growth traits and the developing intestine are still underexplored. Sows were allocated to either a control or 2.0% pregelatinized waxy maize starch plus guar gum (SF) dietary treatment during gestation. Growth performance, diarrhea incidence, gut microbiota composition and metabolism, and gut permeability and inflammation status of 14-day-old suckling piglets wer

The effects of a reduced balanced protein diet on litter moisture, pododermatitis and feather condition of female broiler breeders over three generations.

Protein content reduction in broiler breeder diets has been increasingly investigated. However, broiler breeders reared on low protein diets are characterized by a deterioration of the feather condition. Furthermore, polydipsia induced by controlled feed intake increases litter moisture and as a consequence pododermatitis. This project aimed to study the litter moisture, pododermatitis and feather condition of breeders fed with a 25% reduced balanced protein (RP) diet during the rearing and laying period over three successive generations. The experiment started with two treatments for the F0 g

A low fermentable oligo-di-mono saccharides and polyols (FODMAP) diet reduced pain and improved daily life in fibromyalgia patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic, rheumatic disease characterized by widespread myofascial pain, of unknown aetiology, having a major impact on quality of life (QOL). Available pharmacotherapy for FM is marginally effective. FM is associated with co-morbidities of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). There is growing evidence that diets low in FODMAPs, "fermentable oligo-, di- or mono-saccharides and polyols" [Low FODMAP Diet (LFD)], are effective in treating IBS. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the effects of LFDs on symptoms of FM,

Low Carbohydrate and Moderately Fat-Reduced Diets Similarly Affected Early Weight Gain in Varenicline-Treated Overweight or Obese Smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Weight gain is common when stopping smoking. This study compared the effect of advising smokers to follow a diet low in carbohydrates versus a usual fat-reduced diet on weight gain and nicotine withdrawal. METHODS: In a randomized clinical trial, 122 men and women smokers with body mass index 25-40kg/m(2) were assigned low-carbohydrate versus moderately fat-reduced diets. Within a week thereafter all participants started treatment with a 12-week course of varenicline 10 days prior to the target quit date. Brief dietary and motivational counseling was given at all visits. Self-re

A low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet reduces blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats without deleterious changes in insulin resistance.

Previous studies reported that diets high in simple carbohydrates could increase blood pressure in rodents. We hypothesized that the converse, a low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet, might reduce blood pressure. Six-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR; n = 54) and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY; n = 53, normotensive control) were fed either a control diet (C; 10% fat, 70% carbohydrate, 20% protein) or a low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet (HF; 20% carbohydrate, 60% fat, 20% protein). After 10 wk, SHR-HF had lower (P < 0.05) mean arterial pressure than SHR-C (148 ± 3 vs. 159 ± 3 mmHg) but a similar degr

An exclusive human milk-based diet in extremely premature infants reduces the probability of remaining on total parenteral nutrition: a reanalysis of the data.

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown that an exclusively human milk-based diet is beneficial for extremely premature infants who are at risk for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). However, no significant difference in the other primary study endpoint, the length of time on total parenteral nutrition (TPN), was found. The current analysis re-evaluates these data from a different statistical perspective considering the probability or likelihood of needing TPN on any given day rather than the number of days on TPN. This study consisted of 207 premature infants randomized into three groups: one grou

Dietary phospholipid-rich dairy milk extract reduces hepatomegaly, hepatic steatosis and hyperlipidemia in mice fed a high-fat diet.

Recent studies have suggested that milk and certain dairy food components have the potential to protect against cardiovascular disease. In order to determine whether the addition of milk-derived phospholipids to the diet results in an improvement in metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors, we studied four groups (n=10) of C57BL/6 mice that were fed: (1) a normal non-purified diet (N); (2) the normal non-purified diet supplemented with phospholipid-rich dairy milk extract (PLRDME, 2.5% by wt) (NPL); (3) a high-fat semi-purified diet (HF) containing 21% butterfat+0.15% cholesterol by wt; or (4

Cannabinoid-1 receptor antagonists reduce caloric intake by decreasing palatable diet selection in a novel dessert protocol in female rats.

Although many feeding protocols induce obesity, few use multiple foods to analyze diet selection within a single group of animals. To this end, we describe a protocol using time-limited access to a dessert that induces hyperphagia and body weight gain while allowing simple analysis of diet selection. Female retired breeder Sprague-Dawley rats were provided with ad libitum access to standard moist chow (1.67 kcal/g) and daily 8-h nocturnal access to either a sugar gel (SG; 0.31 kcal/g) or sugar fat whip (SFW; 7.35 kcal/g) for 15 days, and food intake and body weight were measured daily.
