Accuracy, potential harm, weight stigma, and commercial influence in short-form social media content on incretin-based therapies for obesity.

BACKGROUND: Short-form video platforms such as TikTok and YouTube Shorts are major sources of health information, yet little is known about the reliability of what they carry on incretin-based therapies for obesity. We assessed the accuracy, safety, obesity-related stigma, and commercial nature of short-form videos on these medications. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional content analysis on June 15, 2025. Videos were retrieved for six medication keywords on TikTok and YouTube Shorts, and the 100 most-viewed videos within each platform's retrieved pool were included (n = 200). Four physic

Behavioral Characteristics of Medical Students on Social Media Platforms: Topic Modeling and Social Network Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Medical students experience sustained academic, clinical, and psychosocial pressures. Online forums provide an informal space where students seek information, express concerns, and exchange peer support. However, few studies have analyzed these interactions longitudinally based on real-world data from online social platforms. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to integrate topic modeling, temporal topic analysis, and social network analysis (SNA) to investigate evolving concerns, network positions, and influence structures within the bulletin board system of a medical university over a 7

Engagement Trends in Online Vaccine Content: Longitudinal YouTube Study.

BACKGROUND: YouTube is the primary global video platform, hosting both authoritative health information and vaccine-skeptic viewpoints. However, engagement dynamics remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the temporal and textual dynamics of engagement of the YouTube viewership with vaccination content, and specifically content that is in favor of or against vaccination. We contextualized these dynamics in the authority signals of the posting channel and the moderation actions taken by the platform. METHODS: We conducted a 6-month daily longitudinal anal

Exploring the role of social media and online communities in the infertility journey: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Infertility is a global health challenge with profound psychosocial consequences. Couples navigate this journey within social media and online communities. These digital spaces offer opportunities for support, coping and information exchange, but also expose users to comparison culture, misinformation, and inequities. This scoping review aims to synthesize the available evidence on how social-media and online communities shape the psychosocial experience of infertility, identifying both supportive and harmful dimensions. METHODS: Following Joanna-Briggs Institute methodology PRISMA

YouTube as a source of (mis)information for morning sickness self-help - A content analysis and literature review of recommendations for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: One of the most common pregnancy complications is nausea and vomiting (NVP). Most women use the internet to search for information about pregnancy complications, which raises concerns about encountering misinformation online. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed which recommendations regarding NVP women encounter in YouTube videos, and the extent to which these recommendations are evidence-based. DESIGN AND METHOD: This was a two-phase study. First, we conducted an inductive content analysis of the 45 most frequently watched full-length English YouTube videos on the topic of NVP target

Beyond virality: evaluating evidence-based content delivery in social media-based pediatric orthodontic education.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion, affecting over 260 million Chinese children, demands early orthodontic intervention to address both physiological and psychosocial impacts. While social media platforms have become primary sources of health guidance for parents, their algorithm-driven ecosystems often prioritize engagement over scientific rigor. Content creators, including unqualified influencers, frequently disseminate unverified claims about treatment timing, methods, and outcomes. Such misinformation may exacerbate parental anxiety, or promote non-evidence-based interventions. This study evaluates

The psychology of manipulative visibility in the digital public sphere: a discourse analysis of audience reactions to deceptive Instagram content.

INTRODUCTION: The digital public sphere has become a primary site for social learning and belief formation, yet the psychological mechanisms through which manipulative content gains social acceptance remain underexplored from an educational psychology perspective. This study examines how visibility mechanisms on social media may function as informal learning environments that replace rational evaluation with heuristic processing and promote emotional, spectacle-driven participation. Drawing on theories of critical thinking development and sociocognitive learning, the study investigates how exp

[Sand box study on fingering front morphology for NAPLs infiltrated in homogeneous porous media].

Abstract: 1,2-dichloroethane and tetrachlorethylene were studied in four different unsaturated porous media to determine the impact of the properties of media and fluids on the infiltration aided by digital image analysis technique. The results indicated that the whole process of NAPLs migration can be recorded dynamically using the digital image analysis technique. The unstable flow "fingering" occurred in the process of infiltration. Fingering mechanisms such as splitting, coalescing, and shielding were observed in the process of fingering. Front morphology of the infiltration was influenced

Adverse physiological and psychological effects of screen time on children and adolescents: Literature review and case study.

UNLABELLED: A growing body of literature is associating excessive and addictive use of digital media with physical, psychological, social and neurological adverse consequences. Research is focusing more on mobile devices use, and studies suggest that duration, content, after-dark-use, media type and the number of devices are key components determining screen time effects. Physical health effects: excessive screen time is associated with poor sleep and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, obesity, low HDL cholesterol, poor stress regulation (high sympathetic aro

[Media Abstinence is the Onset of Media Literacy].

In the Corona Pandemic, the use of digital media in schools and kindergartens is presented as having no alternative. The developmental conditions of children are changing rapidly. However, the developmental steps and tasks remain the same. Young children in particular need diverse and comprehensive sensory experiences and supportive and protective relationships. Early consumption of digital screen media has a negative impact on child development and is reflected, for example, in language development delays, attention problems, lack of exercise, obesity and less time for free play. Early digitiz

Unpacking the Social Media Happiness Paradox: How Social Media Stressors Undermine Subjective Well-Being Through Social Media Fatigue.

With the increasing embeddedness of social media in everyday life, digital platforms have become important spaces for interpersonal connection, self-presentation, and emotional experience. However, continuous social media engagement does not necessarily enhance users' happiness; instead, it may coincide with psychological strain and lower subjective well-being (SWB), forming what this study refers to as the social media happiness paradox. In this study, the paradox is positioned as the focal phenomenon to be explained rather than as a standalone empirical construct. Drawing on social compariso

Use of health information from social media and health self-efficacy: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Social media has become a common source for health information, yet the relationship between users' experiences with this form of digital health information and health self-efficacy remains poorly understood. This study investigates how the reported reliance on and perceived evaluative difficulty of social-media-based health information are associated with self-efficacy levels in a misinformation-prone environment. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2022 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 6), a nationally representative sample of U. S. adults

How Users Perceive and Respond to Digital Humans: A Scoping Review of Agency, Embodiment, Social Role, and Response Outcomes.

Digital humans are emerging as a form of mediated communication, appearing as virtual influencers, virtual agents, avatars, VTubers, AI companions, and other humanlike digital entities across social media, entertainment, commerce, and online communities. Research on how users perceive and respond to these entities remains fragmented across disciplines. This scoping review synthesizes evidence on users' perceptions of and responses to digital humans. Following established scoping review guidance and PRISMA-ScR reporting principles, we searched Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCO for English-langu

Digital Biosurveillance for Zoonotic Disease Detection in Kenya.

Infectious disease surveillance is crucial for early detection and situational awareness of disease outbreaks. Digital biosurveillance monitors large volumes of open-source data to flag potential health threats. This study investigates the potential of digital surveillance in the detection of the top five priority zoonotic diseases in Kenya: Rift Valley fever (RVF), anthrax, rabies, brucellosis, and trypanosomiasis. Open-source disease events reported between August 2016 and October 2020 were collected and key event-specific information was extracted using a newly developed disease event taxon

Reducing social media use via contingency management: A replication and extension.

Public health concerns about social media use (SMU) have generated interest in the development of interventions capable of reducing SMU. In this study, we replicated and extended Stinson and Dallery (2023) by evaluating the effects of a contingency management with alternative activity selection intervention on SMU and engagement in alternative activities with four college students. Results from the current study replicate the findings of Stinson and Dallery. Reductions in SMU were observed, but no discernable influence on engagement in alternative activities occurred during the intervention ph

A Typology of Moderator Practices and Community Guidelines in Online Mental Health Communities to Establish a Framework for Digital Safety: Systematized Review.

BACKGROUND: The rise of online mental health communities has reshaped the ways individuals seek and receive mental health support. Although online mental health communities (OMHCs) offer a valuable space for peer support, including through experience-sharing, they also present challenges, including moderation practices to cultivate supportive interactions and secure member safety. No comprehensive framework of moderation practices has been established. Developing such an understanding is important, as moderators play a central role in facilitating a sense of community and determining whether O
