Attentional engagement enhances encoding-based discrimination in aging.

The present study investigated how goal-directed attention modulates age-related declines in the ability to behaviorally differentiate overlapping stimuli in memory. Participants completed a perceptual discrimination task involving relevant (attention-prioritized) and irrelevant items, followed by a surprise memory test. Using a sensitive gaze-based measure, we found that directing attention to prioritized stimuli enabled older adults to discriminate among similar items at levels comparable to young adults. Gaze similarity also predicted memory performance, with age differences emerging only d

Object fine-grained discrimination as a sensitive cognitive marker of transentorhinal integrity.

The transentorhinal cortex (tErC) is one of the first regions affected by Alzheimer's disease (AD), often showing changes before clinical symptoms appear. Understanding its role in cognition is key to detecting early cognitive impairments in AD. This study tested the hypothesis that the tErC supports fine-grained representations of unique individual objects, sensitively to the granularity of the demanded discrimination, influencing both perceptual and mnemonic functions. We examined the tErC's role in object versus scene discrimination, using objective (based on a pretrained convolutional neur

Near optimal encoding of numerosity in typical and dyscalculic development.

Dyscalculia is often associated with poor numerosity sensitivity. However, it is not known whether the perceptual systems of dyscalculics have implicit access to the sensory noise of numerosity judgements, and whether their perceptual systems take the noise levels into account in optimizing their perception. We tackled this question by measuring central tendency and serial dependence with a numberline task on dyscalculics and math-typical preadolescents. Numerosity thresholds were also measured with a separate 2AFC discrimination task. Our data confirmed that dyscalculics had poorer numerosity

Reading performance is enhanced by visual texture discrimination training in Chinese-speaking children with developmental dyslexia.

BACKGROUND: High order cognitive processing and learning, such as reading, interact with lower-level sensory processing and learning. Previous studies have reported that visual perceptual training enlarges visual span and, consequently, improves reading speed in young and old people with amblyopia. Recently, a visual perceptual training study in Chinese-speaking children with dyslexia found that the visual texture discrimination thresholds of these children in visual perceptual training significantly correlated with their performance in Chinese character recognition, suggesting that deficits i

Disruptive effects of contingent food on high-probability behavior.

The delivery of food contingent on 10 s of consecutive toy engagement resulted in a decrease in engagement and a corresponding increase in other responses that had been previously reinforced with food. Similar effects were not observed when tokens exchangeable for the same food were delivered, suggesting that engagement was disrupted by the contingent provision of the food, which may have functioned as a discriminative stimulus that occasioned competing responses.

Deficit or creativity: Cesare Lombroso, Robert Hertz, and the meanings of left-handedness.

In the first decade of the twentieth century two influential researchers attempted to explain the origin and impact of left-handedness in human history. The first, the Turin physician Cesare Lombroso, often referred to as the father of modern criminology, was nearing the end of his long distinguished career. Lombroso tied left-handedness to criminality, insanity, and feeble mindedness. According to Lombroso, these groups shared biological regressions to primitive mentalities that could not be reversed by education or training. The second, French sociologist Robert Hertz, was at the beginning o

GABAA-positive modulator selective discriminative stimulus effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane vapor.

BACKGROUND: The abuse-related behavioral effects of inhalant vapors are poorly understood but probably involve multiple neurotransmitter receptor mechanisms. The present study examined the receptor systems responsible for transducing the discriminative stimulus of the abused chlorinated hydrocarbon 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCE) in mice. METHODS: Thirty mice were trained to discriminate 10 min of 12,000 ppm TCE vapor exposure from air using an operant procedure. Substitution tests were then conduced with positive GABA(A) receptor modulators and/or NMDA receptor antagonists. RESULTS: The nonsele

Enhanced frequency discrimination in hearing-impaired individuals: a review of perceptual correlates of central neural plasticity induced by cochlear damage.

Cochlear damages have been shown to induce changes in tonotopic maps in the central auditory system of animals; neurons deprived from peripheral inputs start to respond to stimuli with frequencies close to the cutoff frequency (Fc) or "edge" of the hearing loss, which then become over-represented at the neural level. Here, we review findings, which reveal a possible psychophysical correlate of such central over-representation in human listeners with sensorineural hearing loss. These findings concur to demonstrate a local improvement in difference limens for frequency (DLFs) at or near Fc. This

Incomplete gustatory lateralization as shown by analysis of taste discrimination after callosotomy.

The lateral organization of the gustatory pathway in man is incompletely understood. Majority of the studies support an uncrossed projection from each side of the tongue to the cortex, but reports of an opposite crossed organization continue to appear in the neurological literature. We studied the lateral organization of the gustatory pathway in normal controls, a man with a complete callosal agenesis, and a man with a complete section of the corpus callosum, a right anterior-frontal lesion, and language in the left hemisphere. Sapid solutions were applied to one or the other side of the tongu

Visual discrimination in the pigeon (Columba livia): effects of selective lesions of the nucleus rotundus.

The nucleus rotundus is a large thalamic nucleus in birds and plays a critical role in many visual discrimination tasks. In order to test the hypothesis that there are functionally distinct subdivisions in the nucleus rotundus, effects of selective lesions of the nucleus were studied in pigeons. The birds were trained to discriminate between different types of stationary objects and between different directions of moving objects. Multiple regression analyses revealed that lesions in the anterior, but not posterior, division caused deficits in discrimination of small stationary stimuli. Lesions

No superior perception of hyperventilatory sensations in panic disorder.

It has been argued that panic disorder patients may be more skilled at detecting changes in actual physiology than others. The present study investigated if panic patients are better than controls in perceiving sensations produced by light hyperventilation. Twelve panic patients and 28 control subjects underwent a procedure in which they were exposed 12 times to 1 min of light hyperventilation or 1 min of 'placebo' hyperventilation (isocapnia). Differences in sensations reported during real hyperventilation were compared to sensations reported during 'placebo' hyperventilation. Results demonst

Presession noise increases sensitivity to chlordiazepoxide's discriminative stimulus in pigeons.

1. Pigeons were trained to discriminate chlordiazepoxide (CDP) from saline using two-key food reinforced drug discrimination procedures. Discriminative control by CDP was maintained despite extended training with vehicle-like doses of CDP, by using a modified "fading" procedure that provided for a mixture of drug discrimination training sessions preceded by an i.m. injection of either 8.0 mg/kg CDP, or a lower training dose of CDP (4.0, 2.8, 2.0, 1.4, 1.0, 0.7, or 0.5 mg/kg CDP), or saline. The lower training dose was decreased across blocks of sessions. 2. Four lower training doses (1.4, 1.0,

Scratch and match: pigeons learn matching and oddity with gravel stimuli.

Two groups of 4 pigeons learned either matching-to-sample or oddity-from-sample by digging in white and black gravel for buried grain. Learning occurred as early as Trial 11, and acquisition was accelerated by as much as 100-fold compared with learning in traditional key-peck environments. Control experiments showed that performance was not controlled by cues other than the gravel stimuli and was not due to distributed practice effects of 8 trials per day and longer intertrial intervals.

Discriminative stimulus properties of midazolam: comparison with other benzodiazepines.

Rats (N = 12) were trained to discriminate midazolam (1 mg/kg, IP) from vehicle in a food reinforced operant conditioning procedure. Midazolam, flunitrazepam, diazepam, chlordiazepoxide and pentobarbital showed dose-dependent substitution for midazolam. Buspirone and Ro 15-1788 did not substitute for midazolam. The midazolam cue was dose-dependently antagonized by Ro 15-1788. In rats (N = 12) trained to discriminate chlordiazepoxide (3 mg/kg, IP) from vehicle midazolam, flunitrazepam, diazepam and chlordiazepoxide substituted completely and dose dependently for chlordiazepoxide. Discrimination between senile dementia Alzheimer type patients and -education matched normal controls by means of a 6-test set.

Discrimination between senile dementia Alzheimer type (SDAT) patients (N = 30) and Normal Controls (N = 60) by means of a 6-test set was assessed. Performances on Word Fluency (FL), Memory for Prose (PM) and Finger Agnosia (FA) nearly exhaust the discriminant power of the whole battery, including Constructional Apraxia (CA), Token Test (TT) and Weigl's Sorting Test (WT). The battery, however, leaves some facets of the difference between SDAT patients and Controls unexplored, misclassifying almost 20% of the SDAT patients and 10% of the Controls. We emphasize the role of discriminant analysis i

Matching of normally oriented and mirrored words by good and poor readers.

10 good and 10 poor Grade 6 readers judged tachistoscopically presented word pairs to be "same" or "different" when the words making up the pairs were both normally oriented, both mirrored, or one was oriented and the other was mirrored. Good readers made fewer errors than poor readers on normally oriented "same" pairs but showed no advantage on other configurations. Poor readers were more accurate in detecting mismatches than good readers. These results were discussed in terms of the mechanism that may have been implicated.

Benzodiazepines and discrimination behaviour: dissociation of response and sensory factors.

Ten London pigeons were trained on a schedule which allowed concurrent measurement of motor and exteroceptive sensory changes. The task involved a conditional colour discrimination contingent upon the completion of a fixed interval schedule of responding. As a preliminary pharmacological study the effects of the benzodiazepines, chlordiazepoxide and flurazepam were investigated. Both drugs enhanced perseverative responding (after completion of the FI), and to a variable degree responding during the FI, although there was no evidence for an increase in responding during the inter-trial-interval

Race/ethnic differences in the association of anxiety, depression, and discrimination with subsequent nicotine and cannabis use among young adults: A prospective longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: The shifting patterns in nicotine and cannabis use among young adults is taking place at a time when there is also increased reports of psychosocial stressors such as anxiety, depression, and everyday discrimination. Although race/ethnicity has been found to moderate the impact of psychosocial stressors, there is limited research examining the association of anxiety, depression, and discrimination with patterns of nicotine and/or cannabis product use among diverse young adults. METHODS: Data were from a longitudinal study of 2478 US young adults surveyed between 2019 and 2021. G

Psychological distress and associated stressors with proposed stress reduction model for Chinese international postgraduate students in Malaysia: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, there has been an exponential rise in students inbound to Malaysia to pursue their postgraduate studies. In particular, Chinese international postgraduate students (CIPS) represent a rapidly growing student population in this country, which is postulated to lead to substantial psychological distress resulting from academic, cultural, and financial adjustments that are required of the students immersing themselves in a new environment. Nevertheless, quantitative evidence regarding depression, anxiety, and stress among CIPS in Malaysian public universities remains
