BACKGROUND Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a severe coagulopathy characterized by widespread microvascular thrombosis and consumptive coagulopathy, leading to both thrombosis and hemorrhage. Whereas DIC is well documented in sepsis, trauma, and malignancy, its occurrence during surgery - particularly in the context of chronic inflammation and localized infected wounds - is exceedingly rare. CASE REPORT Acute intraoperative DIC occurred in a 62-year-old woman during suppurative keloid excision. The patient had a history of recurrent keloids with chronic inflammation but no prior…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is like a cloud. We really can see it, but we never feel or touch it. This means that we can diagnose it, but we still do not know how that happens and how to manage it. DIC was first recognized as an uncontrollable bleeding disorder complicated by critical diseases. Curiously, despite such bleeding tendency, pathological examination revealed systemic micro-clot formation in multiple organs. Soon after, these specific findings were revealed as the result of excess coagulation followed by consumptive coagulopathy. Numerous factors, such as imbalanced…

Babesiosis is increasing in the elderly due to an age-related decline in immunity. Prompt diagnosis with blood smear and PCR prevent life-threatening complications, like DIC and HLH. Studies focusing on pathophysiology and risk factors are needed.

Aortic aneurysms and vascular malformations are sometimes associated with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). A typical blood coagulation test shows decrease in platelet count and fibrinogen, and increases in fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) and D-dimer. The coagulation activation marker thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT) and the fibrinolysis activation marker plasmin-α2 plasmin inhibitor (PIC) are significantly increased. α2 plasmin inhibitor (α2PI) is significantly reduced. Since no prolongation of prothrombin time (PT) is noticeable and activated partial thromboplasti…

OBJECTIVE: To date, no study has systematically investigated the impact of drowning-induced asphyxia on hemostasis. Our objective was to test the hypothesis that asphyxia induces bleeding by hyperfibrinolytic disseminated intravascular coagulation.
DESIGN: Observational study.
SETTING: A 2,100-bed tertiary care facility in Vienna, Austria, Europe.
PATIENTS: All cases of drowning-induced asphyxia (n=49) were compared with other patients with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (n=116) and to patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (n=83). Six drowning victims were investigated prospectively. To…

Scrub typhus is an infectious disease that is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. The authors describe an autopsied case of scrub typhus complicated with severe disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). An 82-year-old man complained of fever 4 days after climbing a mountain. The patient was admitted to an urban hospital, and meropenem and ceftriaxone were administered. The patient's condition deteriorated and he was transferred to a second hospital. On physical examination, a black scab was found and scrub typhus was suspected. Despite intensive treatment, the patient died on the fifth day. …

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a serious and relatively uncommon complication of induced or spontaneous abortion or delivery. Occasionally, it has been reported in the absence of predisposing conditions. Little information in the literature describing idiopathic DIC or the treatment of patients with DIC exists.
STUDY DESIGN: From 2002 through 2008, 24 cases of presumptive idiopathic DIC occurred following dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortion between 13 5/7 and 23 6/7 weeks' estimated gestational age at a Midwestern ambulatory surgical center. The characteristics…

BACKGROUND: Disseminated Intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) has been reported following use of Misoprostol which is an old drug with new indications in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Its effectiveness, low cost, stability in tropical conditions and ease of administration as well as side effects like gastrointestinal effect, uterine rupture and post partum haemorrhage (PPH) have been documented.
METHOD: This is to report a case of disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) associated with use of misoprostol for induction of labour and to call for extra vigilance in its use.
RESULT: This was a ca

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a rarely described finding in invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) with unclear impact on mortality.
METHODS: This study included patients with positive cultures of Aspergillus spp. from respiratory specimens, serological evidence of aspergillosis, or lung biopsy findings supporting aspergillosis treated at National Taiwan University Hospital from January 1999 to June 2005. IPA was defined based on the consensus of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer, and the Mycosis Study Group of the Nationa…

HISTORY: A 21-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of high fever, arthralgias and myalgias. One week before he was treated with penicillin G orally because of cough and sore throat.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: The critically ill patient presented with a red throat and cervical lymphadenopathy. Lung auscultation revealed reduced respiratory sounds at both base, heart auscultation revealed a pericardial friction rub. Dermatologic examinations were normal.
INVESTIGATIONS: Laboratory findings were notable for anemia, thrombopenia and leukocytosis, disseminated intravascular coagulation an…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a frequent complication of meningococcal sepsis in children. Despite the availability of potent antibiotics, mortality in meningococcal disease remains high (about 10%), rising to 40% in patients presenting in severe shock and consecutive DIC. As the clinical course and the severity of manifestations of systemic meningococcal infections varies there is a need for early diagnosis of the infection and of the stage of coagulopathy in order to reduce the high mortality rate. Few and rapidly available parameters are needed to classify the wide spectru…

A 29-year-old man with C6 tetraplegia (ASIA A) using an implanted baclofen pump and intrathecal catheter infusion system for spasticity control developed severe spasticity, hyperthermia, hypotension, rhabdomyolysis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation after catheter disconnection. Tracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation were necessary. Extensive workup for a concurrent infection was negative except for urine cultures. The patient remained febrile for 10 days despite empirical antibiotic trials. Administration of high-dose benzodiazepines was inadequate for spasticity control. Spa…
