Copper-catalyzed selective 1,2-disulfidation of 1,3-dienes.

A copper-catalyzed protocol for the regioselective 1,2-bis-sulfuration of 1,3-dienes has been developed. This transformation utilizes sulfonyl chlorides and thiols as bifunctional sulfur sources, proceeding under mild conditions to afford valuable bis-sulfurated frameworks. Mechanistic investigations suggest a radical-mediated process, highlighting that the conjugated diene moiety is essential for the efficacy of this protocol. This method provides a versatile and efficient approach for the installation of diverse sulfur functionalities onto conjugated diene skeletons in a single synthetic ope

Avalanche Dynamics in Stick-Slip Cutting of Molybdenum Disulfide.

We have investigated nanoscale wear on multilayered MoS2, the flagship transition metal dichalcogenide, by elastically driving sharp diamond tips under normal loads sufficient to induce in-plane fracture. The accompanying friction and the resulting wear structures are first characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), revealing a stick-slip regime that drives progressive exfoliation of MoS2 chips. At high normal forces, the slip phase displays hallmark signatures of avalanche dynamics, observed for the first time at the nanoscale, evidenced by a Generalized Extreme Value distribution of fri

Macroheterogeneities Induced by Disulfide Bond Reduction in Native Mucus.

Disulfide bond reducing agents have long been used as therapeutic drugs (mucolytics) for mucus hypersecretions. Breakage of disulfide bridges is known to cause a reduction in the degree of cross-linking, making the mucus more fluid. In addition to the drop in viscoelastic properties, the disulfide breakage is also known to affect the structure of the mucus on both micro- and mesoscale. Despite this knowledge, little is known about the reorganization of the mucus at the macroscopic scale. This contribution explores the effect of the reducing agent, tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine hydrochloride (T

Molybdenum disulfide nanosheets intercalated between graphite layers.

Molybdenum disulfide-graphite intercalation compounds (MoS2-GICs), featuring lateral dimensions of several hundred nanometers and a thickness of one to two molybdenum disulfide layers, were synthesized via intercalation of molybdenum chloride into graphite followed by sulfidation with hydrogen sulfide within the graphite interlayers. The resulting MoS2-GIC catalysts demonstrated superior activity and selectivity for the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene, as well as enhanced activity for naphthalene hydrogenation, compared to molybdenum disulfide supported on graphite (MoS2/Gmix), when e

Oxidation-Induced Mixed Disulfide and Cataract Formation: A Review.

The major function of eye lens is to transmit light onto retina and form an image. This relies on the crystallin proteins, which are tightly packed to achieve a high refractive index and transparency. The proteins are protected and maintained in a reduced state with intrinsic antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH), and redox-regulating enzyme systems, such as thioltransferase to maintain the SH/-S-S-balance. When the protective systems are impaired or reduced due to aging, oxidative stress can lead to SH/S-S imbalance, protein modification, protein-protein aggregation and loss of transparency

Development of a sensor for disulfide bond formation in diverse bacteria.

UNLABELLED: In bacteria, disulfide bonds contribute to the folding and stability of proteins important for processes in the cellular envelope. In Escherichia coli, disulfide bond formation is catalyzed by DsbA and DsbB enzymes. DsbA is a periplasmic protein that catalyzes disulfide bond formation in substrate proteins, while DsbB is an inner membrane protein that transfers electrons from DsbA to quinones, thereby regenerating the DsbA active state. Actinobacteria including mycobacteria use an alternative enzyme named VKOR, which performs the same function as DsbB. Disulfide bond formation enzy

Tethered Alkylidenes for REMP from Carbon Disulfide Cleavage.

Reactions between tungsten alkylidyne [tBuOCO]W≡CtBu(THF)2 1 and sulfur containing small molecules are reported. Complex 1 reacts with CS2 to produce intermediate η2 bound CS2 complex [O2C(tBuC═)W(η2-(S,C)-CS2)(THF)] 8. Heating complex 8 provides a mixture of a monomeric tungsten sulfido complex 9 and a dimeric complex 10 in a 4:1 ratio, respectively. Heating the mixture does not perturb the ratio. Addition of excess THF in a solution of 9 and 10 (4:1) converts 10 to 9 (>96%) with concomitant loss of (CS)x. Both 9 and 10 can be selectively crystallized from the mixture. An alternative synthesi

Proptosis is associated with thiol-disulfide in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) is a vision-threatening finding observed in approximately half of Graves' disease patients. The pathophysiology of GO is unclear, and one of the suspected factors is oxidative stress. In our study, we compared the relationship between proptosis and SH-SS in patients diagnosed with GO. METHODS: In this prospective study, 40 recently diagnosed Graves' disease patients with proptosis, 40 recently diagnosed Graves' disease patients without GO and 30 healthy individuals with similar demographic characteristics were included. Serum thiol-disulfide (SH-SS) meas

Evaluation of thiol/disulfide homeostasis in patients with pityriasis rosea.

Purpose: Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common, self-limiting, inflammatory skin disease with an acute onset. The etiology of PR is not yet clearly known but the defect in the oxidation system involved in many papulosquamous skin diseases may play a role. Thiol/disulfide homeostasis is a new marker of oxidative stress and has been studied in many diseases in recent years. The aim of this study to investigate thiol/disulfide homeostasis in PR patients. Material and methods: Thirty-four patients (18 females, 16 males; median age 26 years) that presented to the Dermatology Clinic of Istanbul Medipol

Role of Selenof as a Gatekeeper of Secreted Disulfide-Rich Glycoproteins.

Selenof (15-kDa selenoprotein; Sep15) is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-resident thioredoxin-like oxidoreductase that occurs in a complex with UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase. We found that Selenof deficiency in mice leads to elevated levels of non-functional circulating plasma immunoglobulins and increased secretion of IgM during in vitro splenic B cell differentiation. However, Selenof knockout animals show neither enhanced bacterial killing capacity nor antigen-induced systemic IgM activity, suggesting that excess immunoglobulins are not functional. In addition, ER-to-Golgi tran
