PURPOSE: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are efficacious for treating various malignancies. In addition to immune-related adverse events (irAEs), growing evidence suggests that ICIs might also be associated with diverticulitis. We aim to assess the clinical presentations and management of colonic diverticulitis among cancer patients after ICI treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on ICI-treated adult cancer patients between 01/2010 and 06/2020. Patients were grouped based on when diverticulitis developed relative to ICI treatment, either before (controls) or after (cases

Diverticular disease affects more than 50% of the population over the age of 60 years in the west and becomes even more common as the population ages. Diverticulitis is one of the complications of diverticular disease and can culminate into colonic perforation. Though perforated diverticular disease is not uncommon, synchronous colonic perforations in diverticulitis is rare. Our patient was admitted with acute abdomen and exploratory laparotomy revealed two side-by-side perforations of the sigmoid colon. A Hartmann's procedure was performed. Macro- and microscopic evaluation confirmed the pres

We report a peculiar case of jejunal diverticulitis in 54-year-old female. Since hospital admission, a colonic diverticulitis was suspected. CT scan of the abdomen showed multiple fluid collections with free intraperitoneal extraluminal air, suggesting bowel perforation. A complicated acute diverticulitis of the colon was suspected but intraoperatively, a perforated acute diverticulitis of jejunum was detected. The aim of this work is to evidence the key role of CT scan of the abdomen in differential diagnosis of unfrequently pathological entities, such as jejunal diverticulitis, to prevent di

BACKGROUND: Acute colonic diverticulitis is a common clinical condition. Severity of the disease is based on clinical, laboratory, and radiological investigations and dictates the need for medical or surgical intervention. Recent clinical trials have improved the understanding of the natural history of the disease resulting in new approaches to and better evidence for the management of acute diverticulitis.
METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Library (years 2004-2015), MEDLINE (years 2004-2015), and EMBASE (years 2004-2015) databases. We used the search terms "diverticulitis, colonic" or "acute…

Colonic diverticulitis is a common condition in the western population. Complicated diverticulitis is defined as the presence of extraluminal air or abscess, peritonitis, colon occlusion, or fistulas. Multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT) is the modality of choice for the diagnosis and the staging of diverticulitis and its complications, which enables performing an accurate differential diagnosis and addressing the patients to a correct management. MDCT is accurate in diagnosing the site of perforation in approximately 85% of cases, by the detection of direct signs (focal bowel wall dis

PURPOSE: To report our experience in the study of acute left-sided colonic diverticulitis and to investigate the semiology and the possible diagnostic role of Computed Tomography (CT).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the last 5 years, we examined with CT 52 patients with acute sigmoid diverticulitis. The examinations were performed with contiguous slices from the diaphragm to the perineum. An iodized contrast agent was administered orally in 32 cases and intravenously in 38. The diagnostic parameters we considered were: diverticula, pericolonic inflammation, thickening, intraparietal tracts, fistula

Diverticulitis of the cecum and ascending colon represent 1.5% of colonic diverticulitis. The preoperative diagnosis is made in 0 to 23% of cases. Two typically misdiagnosed cases are reported. A review of the literature reveals that CT Scan is useful when atypical pain is present in the right lower quadrant. If diagnosed preoperatively, the uncomplicated caecal diverticulitis can be managed conservatively.

PURPOSE: Colonic diverticula are saccules made of colonic mucosa and submucosa that herniate from the colonic lumen through the muscular layer of the wall where straight vessels penetrate. Diverticula are localized in the sigmoid colon in 95% of cases. Bacteria pooling in the lumen may cause lumen erosion and eventually perforation. CT is a useful technique in this condition because it can demonstrate intra- and/or extramural inflammation. Aim of this retrospective study was to assess the capabilities of contrast-enhanced helical Computed Tomography (CT) in sigmoid diverticulitis, especially r

Current understanding of the pathogenesis of colonic diverticulosis and its complications has certain implications for current therapy concepts, which are summarised here. Colonic diverticula in the Western world are pseudodiverticula predominating in the sigmoid colon. Pathogenesis is multifactorial and includes low-fibre diet, dysmotility, increased intraluminal pressure and morphological changes. Uncomplicated diverticulitis results from microperforations, contradicting the hypothesis of the "abscessed diverticulum". Administration of antibiotics for treatment is controversial. Complicated

Diverticulitis is an acute inflammatory condition that typically affects the colon. Diverticulitis of the ileum is rare, with most cases reported in the terminal ileum, and is often triggered by an underlying infection, obstruction, or ischemia. Clinically, ileal diverticulitis presents with symptoms similar to colonic diverticulitis, such as abdominal pain, fever, and constipation. Symptoms can also mimic other conditions, including Crohn's disease and appendicitis. Thus, diagnosis is difficult and often delayed, leading to abscess, fistula formation, and acute abdomen. Diagnosing ileal diver

We report a case of perforated diverticulitis of the transverse colon. The preoperative diagnosis of perforated appendicitis was made on the basis of findings of both ultrasonography and CT. At surgery, an inflammatory mass resembling carcinoma was found in the transverse colon, and segmental resection was then performed. Diverticulitis of the transverse colon is rare, and there have been few reports in the English-language medical literature. This report describes a true diverticulum of the transverse colon that presented as acute diverticulitis.

INTRODUCTION: Colonic diverticulosis is common in western world. Fistula formation occurs in 10-20 % of patients, usually as a consequence of an acute inflammatory process (diverticulitis). Fistulas from diverticulitis occur mainly to bladder, small bowel and uterus. Communication between colon and ovary occurred more frequently in the context of primary neoplasms of ovary, ovarian abscess or Crohn's disease. However, colo-ovarian fistula after acute colonic diverticulitis is a rare entity with few cases reported in literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASES: In this article, we described two cases. W

PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness of and complications associated with metallic stent placement for treatment of benign diseases of the colon.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: With radiologic guidance, the authors placed metallic stents in 10 patients with benign diseases of the colon: Nine stents were placed in the rectosigmoid colon, and one was placed in the descending colon. The stents were placed in two cases of diverticulitis complicated by pelvic abscess, four cases of colonic fistula following surgery, and four cases of postsurgical anastomotic stricture. Coated stents were placed in the cas

Colonic diverticulitis may result in single or multiple fistulae communicating either internally or externally. We report an unusual case of fistulous communication between the colon and the left hip joint secondary to diverticulitis, with subsequent septic arthritis and osteomyelitis of the proximal femur.

Diverticular disease of the sigmoid colon involves more than 50% of population over 60 years, and much more in people older than 80 years. Most patients remain asymptomatic, but, about 10-20% develop complications requiring surgery. Colonic diverticulitis represents an acute bowel inflammation, in many cases, confined only to the sigmoid and descending colon. Recurrent attacks and complications of diverticulitis require surgical procedure, although most cases can be managed medically. The cause of acute diverticulitis remains obscure. It has been speculated that obstruction at the mouth of the

BACKGROUND: Colonic diverticulosis is a common disease, and the coexistence of colonic diverticulosis and colorectal cancer is often seen clinically. It is very rare that colon cancer arises from the mucosa of a colonic diverticulum. When colon cancer arises in a diverticulum and then tends to develop outside the wall, without developing within the lumen, the differential diagnosis from complicating lesions due to colonic diverticulitis is difficult.
CASE SUMMARY: A 76-year-old man was admitted to a nearby clinic with a chief complaint of discomfort and urinary frequency. Since a vesicosigmoi

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to investigate possible risk factors for diverticulitis in kidney transplant recipients affected by colonic diverticulosis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We investigated 717 patients transplanted between 2000 and 2010. Diverticular disease was endoscopically diagnosed in 17 of 717 examined patients. Eight patients were diagnosed with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD); 9 of 17 patients underwent emergency surgery. We performed Hartmann's procedure on all patients, with a second stage performed at least 6 months later.
DISCUSSION: Although the incidence
