INTRODUCTION: Diving and fin swimming are well established sports, including competitive sports, but little is known about the short-term adaptation of physiological parameters in Children and Adults during submersed dynamic apnea near the individual maximum. The current study provides data on the physiological adaptation of Children and young Adults to dynamic apnea diving in real-life conditions.
METHODS: This study provides data from 11 healthy elite fin swimmers (<30 years), including transcutaneous oxygen saturation and heart rate performing various diving protocols.
CONCLUSION: The res…

BACKGROUND: Diving-related injuries remain as a significant health threat, when involvement of the central nervous system (CNS). Decompression sickness (DCS), particularly type II involving neurological symptoms, can lead to brain lesions though specific patterns.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize the clinical and radiological features of brain involvement in diving-related injuries, with a focus on corpus callosum lesions.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study from 2011 to 2023 in the neurology department of a military hospital in Tunis, including divers with acute neurologic…

The COVID-19 pandemic was initiated by the rapid spread of a SARS-CoV-2 strain. Though mainly classified as a respiratory disease, SARS-CoV-2 infects multiple tissues throughout the human body, leading to a wide range of symptoms in patients. To better understand how SARS-CoV-2 affects the proteome from cells with different ontologies, this work generated an infectome atlas of 9 cell models, including cells from brain, blood, digestive system, and adipocyte tissue. Our data shows that SARS-CoV-2 infection mainly trigger dysregulations on proteins related to cellular structure and energy metabo

The incidence of diving accidents is increasing. Point-of-care ultrasound is the only imaging tool available in the field for the military physician who practices in isolated conditions. While ultrasound is integrated in the pre-hospital evaluation protocols of severe trauma patients, few applications are described for diving accident victims. Through a clinical case, we propose an algorithm of ultrasound triage for diving accidents with pulmonary symptoms. Point-of-care ultrasound makes it possible to avoid a risky transfer, by supporting a diagnosis and the treatment on the spot, to rule out…

Dramatic land-use changes in urban landscapes can drive water colour darkening by washing compounds, such as organic matter and iron, from terrestrial ecosystems into urban blue space, consequentially affecting aquatic communities. Here, I studied how pond water colour changes along an urban gradient and how diving beetles (Dytiscidae) respond to the water colour gradient in 11 ponds with fish and 15 ponds without fish in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, Finland. I found that the pond water colour exhibited a non-significant decreasing pattern along the urban gradient, indicating that urbanisat…

Understanding the genetic basis of convergence at broad phylogenetic scales remains a key challenge in biology. Kingfishers (Aves: Alcedinidae) are a cosmopolitan avian radiation with diverse colors, diets, and feeding behaviors-including the archetypal plunge-dive into water. Given the sensory and locomotor challenges associated with air-water transitions, kingfishers offer a powerful opportunity to explore the effects of convergent behaviors on the evolution of genomes and phenotypes, as well as direct comparisons between continental and island lineages. Here, we use whole-genome sequencing

PURPOSE: Complete removal of the matrix over the existing fistula in the event of an extensive cholesteatoma with labyrinth invasion can result in total deafness. This study aimed to present a novel method of underwater endoscopic labyrinth dissection using continuous steroid irrigation (CSI) and systemic steroid administration for hearing preservation.
METHODS: The endoscopic diving technique (EDT) was used to dissect semicircular canals, revealing the underwater anatomy of membranous labyrinth structures, in two cadaver temporal bones. EDT with CSI was used in three clinical cases with exte…

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to identify the possible chain of events leading to fatal scuba diving incidents in Australia from 2001-2013 to inform appropriate countermeasures.
METHODS: The National Coronial Information System was searched to identify scuba diving-related deaths from 2001-2013, inclusive. Coronial findings, witness and police reports, medical histories and autopsies, toxicology and equipment reports were scrutinised. These were analysed for predisposing factors, triggers, disabling agents, disabling injuries and causes of death using a validated template.
RESULTS: There were 126 k…

Beginning in the mid-1930s the comparative physiologists Laurence Irving and Per Fredrik (Pete) Scholander pioneered the study of diving mammals, particularly harbor seals. Although resting on earlier work dating back to the late nineteenth century, their research was distinctive in several ways. In contrast to medically oriented physiology, the approaches of Irving and Scholander were strongly influenced by natural history, zoology, ecology, and evolutionary biology. Diving mammals, they argued, shared the cardiopulmonary physiology of terrestrial mammals, but evolution had modified these bas…

INTRODUCTION: An individual case review of diving-related deaths reported as occurring in Australia in 2011 was conducted as part of the DAN Asia-Pacific dive fatality reporting project.
METHOD: The case studies were compiled using reports from witnesses, the police and coroners. In each case, the particular circumstances of the accident and, where available, details from the post-mortem examination are provided. A chain of events analysis was conducted for each case.
RESULTS: In total, there were 30 reported fatalities (10 more than in 2010). These included 15 snorkel/breath-hold divers, 14…

A 51-year-old man was admitted with right hemiparesis during scuba diving, without headache. Brain magnetic resonance (MR) imaging depicted high-intensity areas in the left superior frontal and cingulate gyri on diffusion-weighted imaging. Dissection of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) was detected using axial MR angiography and 3-dimensional MR cisternography. Dissection of the ACA during and after scuba diving has not been reported before. Dissection of the arteries should be included in the differential diagnosis when neurologic symptoms occur both during and after scuba diving, even if t…

A 29-year-old man was found dead lying on the bed in a hotel room in a famous Slovak mountain resort. He had a full-face diving mask on his face, connected through a diving breath regulator to a valve of an industrial (nondiving) high-pressure tank containing pure 100% nitrogen. The breath regulator (open-circuit type) used allowed inhalation of nitrogen without addition of open air, and the full-face diving mask assured aspiration of the gas even during the time of unconsciousness. At autopsy, we found the typical signs of suffocation. Toxicological analysis revealed 94.7% content of nitrogen…

Diving into lakes and ponds is a common activity of rural children. We present two cases of penetrating orbital injuries from plant matter sustained in this manner. Such injuries pose a particular challenge because wooden foreign bodies are often missed during orbital exploration, and current imaging modalities cannot reliably identify retained organic material. When a patient presents with orbital penetration after a high-risk mechanism of injury, such as freshwater diving, the clinician must maintain a very high index of suspicion for retained wooden foreign body.

The presentation of clinical symptoms due to decompression during diving, varies significantly, as mainly minor disturbances for the gastrointestinal tract in particular have been reported. The following case debates whether diving can cause severe symptoms from the gastrointestinal system. We describe a clinical case of ischemic colitis presented in a 27-year-old male, who manifested abdominal pain while in the process of scuba diving 20 meters undersea, followed by bloody diarrhoea as soon as he ascended to sea level. Taking into account his past medical history, the thorough, impeccable cli…

A piston prosthesis in stapedioplasty significantly modifies the function of the normal ossicular chain. Due to the fact that the ear works as a pressure receptor, a piston prosthesis will be displaced at ambient air pressure changes in a different way than the normal stapes. Our ear is constantly exposed to these pressure changes in daily live, for example during swallowing, with tubal opening, with wind gusts at the external ear, during flying, or diving. Temporal bone experiments showed that elevated static pressures, like in tympanometry, can displace a piston up to 0.5mm in the vestibule.…
