Effects of maternal drinking on neonate state regulation.

Sleep-awake state distribution during inter-feed intervals over a 24-hour period on the third day of life was investigated by means of a continuous non-intrusive bassinet sleep monitor. 31 infants were studied: 14 born to mothers who drank heavily throughout pregnancy (group A), eight whose mothers modified their heavy drinking (group B) and nine whose mothers never were heavy drinkers (group C). Over the 24-hour period, group A infants slept less than those in group B. In comparison with group C, group A infants had a larger proportion of quiet sleep episodes interrupted by awake or unclassif

Drinking amid abundant illicit drugs. The Vietnam case.

We studied drinking patterns and problems of 451 US Army enlisted men after their return from Vietnam. Before Vietnam, nearly half were regular drinkers and one quarter had drinking problems. Problem drinking declined in Vietnam as opiate use rose sharply; half had tried opiates and 20% were opiate dependent. After Vietnam, opiate use decreased (now less than 2% opiate dependent) and problem drinking again became ascendant. At time of interview, 17% had drunk in an alcoholic pattern at some period in their lives and another 41% had had problems from drinking. The younger men were more likely t

Ethanol drinking involves astrocytes in male Wistar rats.

Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cells in the brain and an integrative component of the neural network. Studies have shown that ethanol altered expression of an astrocyte marker, i.e., glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), in two key corticolimbic regions, the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and nucleus accumbens (NAc). These regions comprise anatomically and functionally different subregions, i.e., the prelimbic (PL) and infralimbic (IL) cortex of the mPFC, the shell and core subregions of the NAc. However, ethanol effects on GFAP expression within these subregions remain largely unkn

Alterations in Abdominal Blood Flows After Drinking Coffee.

Coffee exerts beneficial effects on health, such as suppressing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and fatty liver. Coffee also relieves headaches by the caffeine component decreasing blood flow in the cerebral arteries. Caffeine is also used to treat apnea in premature infants, but blood flow in the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) decreases as a side effect. However, whether drinking coffee decreases abdominal blood flows in adults remains uncertain. If drinking coffee decreases SMA blood flow in adults, subsequent blood flows via the portal vein (PV) to the liver might also decrease,

Microbiological quality of drinking water from water dispensers.

The consumption of drinking water from sources other than tap water, such as bottled water or water dispenser (WD) machines, is increasing worldwide, driven by consumer preferences for health, convenience, and taste. This trend raises concerns about potential microbial contamination and associated public health risks. In this review, we aimed to comprehensively analyze the scientific literature on microbial contamination in water dispenser machines, evaluate the quality of dispensed water, identify sources of contamination and potential health implications, and propose solutions to mitigate th

Low-frequency binge drinking: associated factors and consequences.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking (BD) is a public health concern among young adults. Whether it is harmful even at a low frequency remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To test if even low-frequency (less than once a month) BD is associated with a higher likelihood of alcohol use disorder (AUD), and if some key environmental and psychological features characterize low-frequency binge drinkers. METHODS: Alcohol-related, environmental and psychological data were collected from university students aged 18-25 who drank alcohol. Students were divided into four groups according to their BD frequency: non-binge d

Predictors and Consequences of Emerging Adulthood Binge Drinking.

OBJECTIVE: We examined binge drinking patterns during emerging adulthood (EA) and their relation to risk in adolescence and consequences in adulthood. METHOD: Growth mixture modeling was employed to identify trajectories of binge drinking across EA (ages 18-29). Parent, peer, and individual risk factors at ages 15 and 16 were examined as predictors. Class membership was used as a predictor of poor mental and physical health and alcohol problems in adulthood (ages 31, 34, 41). RESULTS: Four patterns of binge drinking emerged (n = 476, 56% female, 99% Non-Hispanic White): Abstainers & Minimal

Evidence of Aerosol Formation During Simulated Wine Drinking.

In this study, aerosols formed via oral movement while drinking wine were hypothesized as an oral-nasal delivery mechanism for aroma compounds with limited volatility, potentially inducing specific retronasal sensory perception. To this end, the formation mechanism of flavored aerosol particles (hexyl hexanoate) using model wine samples was investigated in vitro using the mechanical agitation method. The physical and physicochemical property variations of model wine samples had a significant impact on the total quantity of formed aerosol and average particle size, as well as flavor release, va

Impact of adolescents' binge drinking on blood chemistry.

Adolescent binge drinking is increasingly common. This study investigates the anomalies in glucose, sodium, calcium, potassium, and acid-base homeostasis induced by binge drinking in adolescents. The records of teenagers who sought medical attention for binge drinking (ethanol level ≥ 0.80 g/L) at the Pediatric Emergency Department, Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan (Italy), spanning the years 2013 to 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. For this analysis, cases were selected if documented blood chemistry encompassed sodium, potassium, total calcium, glucose, acid-base balance, an

A Young man with Peri-ictal water drinking.

Neuro-vegetative features have been linked to epilepsy arising from the temporal lobe, which can be seen during ictal events and play an important role in determining the focal side of the lesion. Among the rare known features is peri-ictal water drinking (PIWD). Here, we present the case of a 31-year-old male with refractory temporal epilepsy, having episodes of PIWD. The patient was considered a candidate for resective surgery and was investigated accordingly, including long-term video electroencephalogram (EEG), brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and neuropsychology assessment, which p

Uranium in drinking water: a public health threat.

Uranium (U) has no known essential biological functions. Furthermore, it is well known for its toxicity, radioactivity, and carcinogenic potency. Impacts on human health due to U exposure have been studied extensively by many researchers. Chronic exposure to low-level U isotopes (radionuclides) may be interlinked with cancer etiology and at high exposure levels, also kidney disease. Other important issues covered U and fertilizers, and also U in soils or human tissues as an easily measurable indicator element in a pathophysiological examination. Furthermore, phosphate fertilization is known as

Drinking to death: Hyponatraemia induced by synthetic phenethylamines.

Synthetic phenethylamines are widely abused drugs, comprising new psychoactive substances such as synthetic cathinones, but also well-known amphetamines such as methamphetamine and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, ecstasy). Cathinones and amphetamines share many toxicodynamic mechanisms. One of their potentially life-threatening consequences, particularly of MDMA, is serotonin-mediated hyponatraemia. Herein, we review the state of the art on phenethylamine-induced hyponatremia; discuss the mechanisms involved; and present the preventive and therapeutic measures. Hyponatraemia mediated

Understanding Student Drinking Patterns: Does Shame Proneness Matter?

This study ( N = 202; mean age = 19.52 years, SD = 1.36 years; 66.5% female) analyzed three structural equation models to determine whether ruminative brooding and negative affect, moderated by shame proneness, explained college student drinking behaviors more than a model without shame proneness. Results indicated a model including shame proneness fit the data best; however, the moderated variables were not significantly associated with other variables in the retained model. Results are discussed alongside clinical recommendations within a university counseling center framework.

Maternal drinking and risky sexual behavior in offspring.

Teenage mothers are more likely to use drugs, and their children are more likely to use substances and become pregnant during adolescence. Teenage mothers' substance use may play a role in the intergenerational risk for adolescent pregnancy. Pregnant adolescents (12-18 years) were seen during pregnancy and postnatal years 6, 10, 14, and 16 (n = 332). Teenage mothers reported on substance use and family characteristics. The offspring reported substance use (starting at age 10) and sexual behavior (ages 14 and 16). Prenatal alcohol exposure was associated with offspring (a) having a risky first
