Occupational Exposure to Industrial Dust and Rates of Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Exposure to lung irritants such as smoking and organic solvents has been associated with increased risk of multiple sclerosis (MS), particularly among genetically susceptible individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between occupational exposure to industrial dust and MS and to assess potential interactions with smoking and HLA-DRB1*15:01. METHODS: We conducted a Swedish population-based case-control study. Patients with incident MS age 16-70 years were consecutively identified by neurologists at 40 clinics (2005-2015). Eligibility crite…

Bacterial composition of dust deposited in Qatar: A seasonal study.

Dust storms in the Middle East threaten public health by deteriorating air quality and transporting microorganisms over vast distances. This study analyzes seasonal variations in dust-borne bacterial diversity on photovoltaic (PV) panels using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and bioinformatics to assess community composition and metabolic potential. Our findings suggest that seasonal ecological factors have potential effects on the composition of the airborne bacterial community. In Qatar, the high atmospheric CO2 levels associated with hydrocarbon refining had promoted the growth of hydrocarbon-degr…

Separation and preparation of nanoparticles of urban dust for biological studies.

Nanoparticles (NPs) of urban dust pose a potential threat to public health. Nevertheless, this issue remains largely unexplored due to a lack of biological research related to these NPs. This may be attributed to the complexity of the separation, characterization, analysis, and subsequent preparation of NPs of urban dust for biological studies. In the present work, the methodology for the separation and preparation of NPs of urban dust for biological assays has been developed. The isolation of NPs from bulk samples of urban dust has been carried out using coiled tube field-flow fractionation, …

The unresolved mystery of dust particle swarms within the magnetosphere.

Early-generation in situ dust detectors in near-Earth space have reported the occurrence of clusters of sub-micron dust particles that seemed unrelated to human spaceflight activities. In particular, data from the impact ionization detector onboard the HEOS-2 satellite indicate that such swarms of particles occur throughout the Earth's magnetosphere up to altitudes of 60 000 km-far beyond regions typically used by spacecraft. Further account of high-altitude clusters has since been given by the GEO-deployed GORID detector, however, explanations for the latter have so far only been sought in GE…

Combined impact of heat and dust on diabetes hospitalization in Kuwait.

INTRODUCTION: In Kuwait, a severe diabetes and obesity epidemic coexists with intense dust storms and harsh summer heat. While, theoretically, this interplay between dust, heat, and diabetes presents a serious public health problem, the empirical understanding of the actual risks remains limited. We hypothesized that increased exposure to heat and dust, independently and jointly, exacerbates the risk of hospitalization for diabetes patients. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We placed custom-designed particle samplers in Kuwait to collect daily dust samples for 2 years from 2017 to 2019. Samples w…

A standardised method of marking male mosquitoes with fluorescent dust.

BACKGROUND: Prior to a major release campaign of sterile insects, including the sterile insect technique, male mosquitoes must be marked and released (small scale) to determine key parameters including wild population abundance, dispersal and survival. Marking insects has been routinely carried out for over 100 years; however, there is no gold standard regarding the marking of specific disease-transmitting mosquitoes including Anopheles arabiensis, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The research presented offers a novel dusting technique and optimal dust colour and quantities, suitable for sm…

Dust or disease? Perceptions of influenza in rural Southern Malawi.

Influenza virus infections cause between 291 243 and 645 832 deaths annually, with the highest burden in low-income settings. Research in hi … r conditions, especially malaria and pneumonia, rather than as a disease of its own. Most mentioned dust as the main cause of influenza and believed influenza could be prevented by cleaning the home thoroughly. Treatment seeking for influenza followed different stages, usually starting with home remedies followed by purchasing drugs from groceries and …

The effect of chronic exposure to flour dust on pulmonary functions.

Purpose. This study aimed to examine the effect of chronic exposure to flour dust on the pulmonary symptoms and pulmonary indices of mill workers. Methods. The cohort study was conducted on 67 mill workers and 53 controls from 2014 to 2016. Demographic information was collected through interviews and pulmonary indices; flour dust exposure was measured by spirometry, and NIOSH 0500 and NIOSH 0600 methods. Results. The incidences of pulmonary symptoms, including cough, sputum, dyspnea, wheezing and bronchitis, were significantly more in the case group than the control group. At the beginning of …

The Rise of Coccidioides: Forces Against the Dust Devil Unleashed.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) is a fungal disease caused by the inhalation of Coccidioides posadasii or C. immitis. This neglected disease occurs in the desert areas of the western United States, most notably in California and Arizona, where infections continue to rise. Clinically, coccidioidomycosis ranges from asymptomatic to severe pulmonary disease and can disseminate to the brain, skin, bones, and elsewhere. New estimates suggest as many as 350,000 new cases of coccidioidomycosis occur in the United States each year. Thus, there is an urgent need for the development of a vaccine and n

In vitro exposure of nasal epithelial cells to atmospheric dust.

Dust storms are common phenomena in many parts of the world, and significantly increase the level of atmospheric particulate matter (PM). The soil-derived dust is a mixture of organic and inorganic particles and even remnants of pesticides from agricultural areas nearby. The risk of human exposure to atmospheric dust is well documented, but very little is known on the impact of inhaled PM on the biological lining of the nasal cavity, which is the natural filter between the external environment and the respiratory tract. We developed a new system and methodology for in vitro exposure of culture…

Lung health in era of climate change and dust storms.

Dust storms are strong winds which lead to particle exposure over extensive areas. These storms influence air quality on both a local and global scale which lead to both short and long-term effects. The frequency of dust storms has been on the rise during the last decade. Forecasts suggest that their incidence will increase as a response to the effects of climate change and anthropogenic activities. Elderly people, young children, and individuals with chronic cardiopulmonary diseases are at the greatest risk for health effects of dust storms. A wide variety of infectious and non-infectious dis…

The Efficacy of Local Autologous Bone Dust: A Systematic Review.

STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review of bone dust as an autologous bone graft to encourage osseous fusion. OBJECTIVE: To identify and review studies that report on the therapeutic potential of bone dust. The research question was structured as follows: populations-animal and human sources of bone dust harvested using burrs; interventions-autologous bone dust compared with other clinically utilized bone graft options; outcomes assessed-(1) in vitro cell viability, cell differentiation, and osteogenic potential and (2) clinical efficacy in the form of fusion rates as assessed using plain radiograp…

Occupational bronchiolitis induced by cotton dust exposure in a nonsmoker.

The most well-known disease caused by cotton dust is byssinosis though it is also associated with chronic obstructive airways disease, and very rarely, interstitial lung disease. Obliterative bronchiolitis has never been reported in this setting. We report a 63-year-old, nonsmoker male, who presented with complaints of cough and exertional dyspnoea for 10 years. He had worked in textile industry for 35 years and symptoms had persisted even after quitting. Examination revealed prolonged expiration with expiratory wheeze, and pulmonary function tests revealed severe airflow limitation with air t…
