Effects of the pandemic crisis on entrepreneurship and sustainable development.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an economic crisis in advanced economies greater than the 2008 economic crisis, as the latest Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forecasts indicate. Entrepreneurship activity is an important factor to be considered to reduce this negative. The objective of this paper is to analyze the factors that favor entrepreneurship in the COVID-19 pandemic situation and explore the relationship between entrepreneurship and sustainable development. Monetary, fiscal, competitiveness, and business expectations are factors to consider. To achieve thi

Selecting technologies for assessment.

This article describes criteria used by several organizations to select technologies for assessment and the factors that are common to most lists of criteria. It presents a framework or model (called TAPSS) that relates the most important factors. The model can be used to estimate the expected impact of an assessment on health and economic outcomes for a population. It incorporates information on such factors as the health and economic importance of the disease addressed by the technology, the expected impact of the technology on health and economic outcomes, variations in the technology's cur

An Enhanced Approach for Economic Evaluation of Long-Term Benefits of School-Based Health Promotion Programs.

Chronic diseases constitute a tremendous public health burden globally. Poor nutrition, inactive lifestyles, and obesity are established independent risk factors for chronic diseases. Public health decision-makers are in desperate need of effective and cost-effective programs that prevent chronic diseases. To date, most economic evaluations consider the effect of these programs on body weight, without considering their effects on other risk factors (nutrition and physical activity). We propose an economic evaluation approach that considers program effects on multiple risk factors rather than o

The Effect of Economic Reliance, Stress, and Women's Employment Status on Intimate Partner Violence Risk Among Partnered Women in Burkina Faso and Kenya.

Economic factors, such as economic reliance on male partners, and economic stressors such as household income or employment loss, play an important role in the risk of intimate partner violence (IPV) within romantic partnerships. To investigate these relationships, we used survey data from IPUMS Performance Monitoring for Action that were collected in 2020 and 2021. We assessed the relationship between several economic factors-(1) women's economic reliance on their partners, (2) household income loss, and (3) respondent's employment status over the past year-and experience of IPV in the past y…

To what extent does IQ 'explain' socio-economic variations in function?

BACKGROUND: The aims of this study were to examine the extent to which higher intellectual abilities protect higher socio-economic groups from functional decline and to examine whether the contribution of intellectual abilities is independent of childhood deprivation and low birth weight and other socio-economic and developmental factors in early life. METHODS: The Maastricht Aging Study (MAAS) is a prospective cohort study based upon participants in a registration network of general practices in The Netherlands. Information was available on 1211 men and women, 24-81 years old, who were witho

Assessing the Relative Importance of Sociocontextual Determinants of Depression: A Random Forest Analysis of Young Korean Adults.

PURPOSE: This study examines the relative importance of various sociocontextual determinants of depression among young adults, including social, economic, residential, and demographic factors. Although previous research has identified a variety of contributors to depressive symptoms, their relative significance remains insufficiently explored. METHODS: Using data from the 2022 Youth Life Survey in South Korea (N = 13,038), this study uses Random Forest regression to assess the predictive power and impact magnitude of 30 sociocontextual factors. It uses the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score

Economic Vulnerability among Girls at Risk for Adolescent Pregnancy: Qualitative Findings among a Clinic Sample of Girls Residing in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region.

BACKGROUND: In the U.S., research to identify the risk factors explaining high rates of adolescent pregnancy disproportionately affecting racial/ethnic minorities, including Latinas, have largely focused on social and cultural factors that influence girls' pregnancy intentions and decisions regarding the use of contraception, as well as girls' sexual and reproductive decision-making control in relationships. However, economic factors may play a role in increasing girls' risk for adolescent pregnancy as well. Disproportionately high rates of adolescent pregnancy occur in areas of concentrated p…

Socioeconomic disparities and health: impacts and pathways.

Growing socioeconomic disparity is a global concern, as it could affect population health. The author and colleagues have investigated the health impacts of socioeconomic disparities as well as the pathways that underlie those disparities. Our meta-analysis found that a large population has risks of mortality and poor self-rated health that are attributable to income inequality. The study results also suggested the existence of threshold effects (ie, a threshold of income inequality over which the adverse impacts on health increase), period effects (ie, the potential for larger impacts in late

Is economic freedom a panacea for environmental sustainability? Global and regional evidence.

Environmental degradation continues to escalate globally, significantly threatening the world economy. The need to design and implement appropriate policies to address environmental degradation (CO2 emissions) has resulted in many studies examining the socioeconomic and institutional factors that affect CO2 emissions. While previous studies have examined various factors influencing CO2 emissions, there is limited evidence on how economic institutions impact it. This study explores the influence of economic institutions on CO2 emissions using panel data from 119 countries from 2000 to 2021 usin

Social and Emotional Fears and Worries Influencing the Quality of Life of Female Celiac Disease Patients Following a Gluten-Free Diet.

The gluten-free diet is effective in the majority of celiac disease (CD) patients, but it is burdensome and may influence quality of life (QoL). The aim of the study was to analyze the social and emotional fears and worries influencing the QoL of female CD patients following a gluten-free (GF) diet, as well as to indicate the sociodemographic interfering factors. The study was conducted on a group of 251 female CD patients, while emotional, social and worries subscales of the Celiac Disease Questionnaire (CDQ) were applied, as well as purchase-related emotions and behaviors were assessed. Pandemics and socio-economic status. Evidence from the plague of 1630 in northern Italy.

This paper investigates the biological, socio-economic, and institutional factors shaping the individual risk of death during a major pre-industrial epidemic. We use a micro-demographic database for an Italian city (Carmagnola) during the 1630 plague to explore in detail the survival dynamics of the population admitted to the isolation hospital (lazzaretto). We develop a theoretical model of admissions to the lazzaretto, for better interpretation of the observational data. We explore how age and sex shaped the individual risk of death, and we provide a one-of-a-kind study of the impact of soci

Influence of heavy traffic, city dwelling and socio-economic status on nasal symptoms assessed in a postal population survey.

BACKGROUND: The association between social position, living environment and nasal symptoms is inconsistent. We wanted to test how living environment, occupation and social position were associated with nasal symptoms. METHODS: In a postal survey study of a random sample of 12,079 adults, aged 20-59 years living in the southern part of Sweden the relationship between nasal symptoms, socio-economic status and environmental factors was analysed. RESULTS: The response rate was 70% (n = 8469) of whom 33% reported significant nasal symptoms. Nasal discharge, thick yellow discharge, a blocked nose,

The longitudinal relationship between economic and social stressors, emotion dysregulation and mental health among refugees in protracted displacement.

AIMS: Trauma-related psychopathology is markedly elevated among refugee populations, particularly those living in sustained displacement. While economic, social and psychological factors have been linked to the deterioration of mental health following trauma and displacement, these factors have rarely been investigated concurrently and longitudinally. Consequently, there is little information on the potential longitudinal mechanisms driving mental ill-health in displacement settings. This study explored the temporal association between economic stressors, social stressors, emotion dysregulatio

Epidemiologic study of the association between human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 and Strongyloides stercoralis infection in female blood donors (Guadeloupe, French West Indies).

This case control study was conducted among female blood donors in Guadeloupe. A total of 85 HTLV-1 positive subjects were matched by age (+/- 5 years) in a 1:3 ratio to 255 HTLV-1 negative controls. The mean age was 48.5 and 48.9 years respectively. Ethnic, environmental and socio-economic risk factors were studied. Four risk factors were found independently associated with HTLV-1 seropositivity: Strongyloides stercoralis antibodies (OR = 3.6, CI 1.8, 7.3), low socio-economic status (OR = 2.0 CI 1.0, 4.0), low educational level (OR = 2.0 CI 1.0, 4.0) and agricultural activity (OR = 2.8 CI 1.4

Dynamic pathways of maternal well-being: A longitudinal latent class analysis of risk and adaptive trajectories in low-income families.

Maternal well-being is shaped by a dynamic interplay of structural, relational, and psychological factors, yet most research has examined risk processes across broad economic ranges rather than within families experiencing persistent disadvantage. Grounded in ecological systems, family stress, and resilience theories, this longitudinal study examined patterns of risk and resilience among 634 very low-income, racially diverse (25.6% White, 36.4% Black, 24.8% Asian, 11.4% Other) families, 43% of whom were single-parent households. Using latent class analysis, we identified four distinct maternal
