Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on road freight transportation - A Colombian case study.

The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc worldwide, with profound economic, environmental, and social implications. Fears about the economic situation have called attention to freight transportation performance as a derivative economic development demand. It is critical to economic growth, especially in industrialized countries with a strong positive relationship to road transport. The empirical evidence in developing countries, such as Colombia, showed that economic growth has had linked to road freight transport regardless of comparisons with other economic sectors. Thie main objective of the

Factors affecting depression and health-related quality of life in the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated changes in the health behaviors of the elderly due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), concerns due to COVID-19, depression, and healthrelated quality of life (HRQOL), and aimed to identify factors that affect depression and HRQOL in the elderly. METHODS: This study was conducted using data from the 2021 Community Health Survey of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. From a total sample size of 229,242 individuals, 74,376 elderly people aged 65 or older were selected as subjects, and changes in health behaviors, concerns due to COVID-19, dep

Sweeping Changes in Marriage, Cohabitation, and Childbearing in Central and Eastern Europe: New Insights from the Developmental Idealism Framework.

In Central and Eastern Europe following the political transformations of the late 1980s and early 1990s there were dramatic declines in marriage and childbearing, significant increases in nonmarital cohabitation and childbearing, and a movement from reliance on abortion to a reliance on contraception for fertility limitation. Although many explanations have been offered for these trends, we offer new explanations based on ideational influences and the intersection of these ideational influences with structural factors. We focus on the political, economic, social, and cultural histories of the

Exploring synthesis as a vital cognitive skill in complex clinical diagnosis.

Clinicians employ two main cognitive approaches for diagnoses, depending on their expertise. Novices typically use linear hypothetico-deductive methods, while experts rely more on intuitive pattern recognition. These closely correspond to System 1 and System 2 thinking described in behavioral economics. We propose that complex cases additionally require the cognitive skill of synthesis, to visualize and understand the connections between various elements. To illustrate the concept, we describe a 60-year-old individual with a 6 h history of chest pain, fever, cough, accompanying chronic heart f

Neuroanatomical substrates accounting for the effect of present hedonistic time perspective on risk preference: the mediating role of right posterior parietal cortex.

The preference for taking risk troubles people across multiple domains including health, economics, and social well-being. Prior research has demonstrated that risk preference can be influenced by time perspective (TP). However, little is known about the neural substrates underlying the effect of TP on risk preference. Here, we used a voxel-based morphometry (VBM) method across two samples to address this question. In Sample 1, the behavioral results showed a positive correlation between present hedonistic TP (PHTP) and gambling rate (the index of risk preference), indicating the higher PHTP,

Are There Missed Opportunities to Maximize Organ Donation Registrations? An Examination of Driver's License Applications Across the United States.

INTRODUCTION: With 116 000 people waiting for transplants and 8000 patients dying annually on waiting lists, the United States has a considerable organ shortage. An insufficient number of Americans have registered to become organ donors when obtaining driver's licenses or ID cards. Across states, there is considerable variability in organ donor registration rates as well as driver's license applications. METHODS: The purpose of this project was to describe the variability in the phrasing of the organ donor registration question by state bureaus of motor vehicles as well as other application q

The number of lateral hypothalamus orexin/hypocretin neurons contributes to individual differences in cocaine demand.

Lateral hypothalamus (LH) orexin neuron signaling has been implicated in the motivation to seek and take drugs of abuse. The number of LH orexin neurons has been shown to be upregulated with exposure to drugs of abuse. We sought to determine if the number of LH orexin neurons related to individual differences in motivation (demand) for cocaine in our behavioral economics (BE) paradigm, and whether knockdown of these cells predicted changes in economic demand. We quantified LH orexin cell numbers in animals immediately following our BE paradigm, as well as after a 2-week period of abstinence, t

The effect of economy type on heroin and saccharin essential value.

According to behavioral economics, reinforcer value should be lower in an open economy than in a closed economy. An animal model was used to determine how economy type affected the value of heroin and saccharin. In a first phase, separate groups of rats worked for heroin or saccharin. The price of these reinforcers increased over sessions. For rats in the open heroin or open saccharin economies, the work period of each session was followed by a postwork period where a cheaper source of heroin or saccharin was available for three hours. For rats in the closed economies, the work period was thei

The social and economic burden of frontotemporal degeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the socioeconomic burden of frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) compared to previously published data for Alzheimer disease (AD). METHODS: A 250-item internet survey was administered to primary caregivers of patients with behavioral-variant FTD (bvFTD), primary progressive aphasia, FTD with motor neuron disease, corticobasal syndrome, or progressive supranuclear palsy. The survey included validated scales for disease staging, behavior, activities of daily living, caregiver burden, and health economics, as well as investigator-designed questions to capture patient and care

Stratified patterns of healthcare-seeking behavior among older adults in Fujian, China: exploring the behavioral foundations of health inequality.

BACKGROUND: China is experiencing rapid population aging amid longstanding but gradually narrowing disparities in health resource allocation. As insurance coverage, primary care capacity, and basic service availability become increasingly equitable, variations in healthcare-seeking behaviors have become a key pathway through which socio-economic differences are reproduced as health inequalities. This study examined the distribution, latent patterns, and socio-demographic correlates of five representative healthcare-seeking behaviors among older adults in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional surve

Suubi4Her: a study protocol to examine the impact and cost associated with a combination intervention to prevent HIV risk behavior and improve mental health functioning among adolescent girls in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Asset-based economic empowerment interventions, which take an integrated approach to building human, social, and economic capital, have shown promise in their ability to reduce HIV risk for young people, including adolescent girls, in sub-Saharan Africa. Similarly, community and family strengthening interventions have proven beneficial in addressing mental health and behavioral challenges of adolescents transitioning to adulthood. Yet, few programs aimed at addressing sexual risk have applied combination interventions to address economic stability and mental health within the tradi

The Responders' Gender Stereotypes Modulate the Strategic Decision-Making of Proposers Playing the Ultimatum Game.

Despite the wealth of studies investigating factors affecting decisions, not much is known about the impact of stereotypical beliefs on strategic economic decision-making. In the present study, we used the ultimatum game paradigm to investigate how participants playing as proposer modulate their strategic economic behavior, according to their game counterparts' stereotypical identity (i.e., responders). The latter were introduced to the participants using occupational role nouns stereotypically marked with gender paired with feminine or masculine proper names (e.g., linguist-Anna; economist-Da

The impact of social safety net policies on mental health and suicide outcomes in the United States: A scoping review.

Existing evidence indicates that there are reciprocal relationships between economic insecurity and poor mental health and suicidal behavior. In the United States, prior research shows that state and federal policies that increase social safety net program benefits or eligibility contribute to improved economic security. Thus, these policies may affect mental health and suicide outcomes. The aim of this scoping review was to synthesize the state of the evidence on the impact of state and federal social safety net policies on mental health, suicidal behavior, and suicide death. Of 64 identified

Baseline cocaine demand predicts contingency management treatment outcomes for cocaine-use disorder.

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a significant public health issue. Behavioral interventions such as contingency management (CM) have been demonstrated to be highly effective in promoting cocaine abstinence. However, identifying individual characteristics associated with cocaine relapse may help improve treatment outcomes. Cocaine demand is a behavioral economic measure that shares a scientific foundation with CM. In the current study, we assessed baseline cocaine demand using a hypothetical cocaine purchasing task. Participants (N = 58) consisted of treatment-seeking individuals with CUD. All pa

Family Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Toward Severe Congenital Neutropenia.

Severe congenital neutropenia is a rare disorder. The survival and quality of life of patients radically improved through infection prevention, use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and the appropriate use of antibiotics during infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the precautions taken by families to prevent infections, the level of knowledge regarding the disease, and the impact of external factors such as education and economic status on behavior and compliance in patients and caregivers in terms of the following treatment protocols. Questionnaires were designed with the
