Clinical management of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with anodontia: case report.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare hereditary disorder with a characteristic physiognomy. The case of a 5-year-old child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and complete anodontia is presented. Because of the anodontia and the need for treatment at an early age, the prosthetic management of such a young child can be difficult. Complete dentures were provided to encourage a normal psychological development and to improve the function of the stomatognathic system.

HLA antigens in bullous epidermolysis, congenital ichthyosis and ectodermal dysplasia.

HLA-ABC antigen typing was carried out in 4 homozygous patients and 10 family members from three families with bullous epidermolysis, 7 homozygous patients and 19 family members of six families with ichthyosis, and 4 homozygous patients and 8 family members of 4 families with ectodermal dysplasia. The type of heredity was established on the basis of genetical evidence and the clinical picture. In bullous epidermolysis cases autosomal recessive heredity was detected in two families with congenital bullous epidermolysis, and autosomal heredity in two families with dystrophic bullous epidermolysi…

[Oral features of and treatment options for patients with ectodermal dysplasia 1].

Ectodermal dysplasia can present in various ways. A reduced number of constructed teeth, deformed teeth and an underdeveloped alveolar process are common oral features in ectodermal dysplasia. Although the dental treatment goal is always to restore function, there is no standard treatment protocol for this condition. The dental treatment plan must be individually tailored based on the oral situation, (technical) possibilities, age and wishes of the patient. This requires a multidisciplinary approach among different healthcare providers. In this first part of a two-part article, 2 cases of ecto…

Dental Management of Ectodermal Dysplasia: A Report of Two Clinical Cases.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) represents a group of hereditary disorders affecting ectoderm-derived structures, including teeth, hair, nails, and sweat glands. Dental anomalies, such as hypodontia, anodontia, and conical-shaped teeth, are hallmark features of this condition. This article presents two pediatric cases of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, each exhibiting distinct oral and functional manifestations. We discuss the clinical presentation, radiographic features, and individualized, multidisciplinary dental management strategies used for each child. Early diagnosis and intervention are e…

Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasias: Phenotypic and Genotypic Findings in 32 Cases.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasias are a genetic condition affecting ectoderm-derived structures such as hair, teeth, nails, and sweat glands, resulting from variations in the EDA, EDAR, EDARADD, and WNT10A genes. This study examined 32 cases from 25 unrelated families from Türkiye, identifying seven novel variants in the EDA, EDAR, and WNT10A genes. The distribution of genetic alterations across the cohort revealed that 44% of the families (11/25) harbored variants in EDA, whereas EDAR and WNT10A variants were identified in 32% (8/25) and 24% (6/25) of families, respectively. Clinical evaluat…

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia syndrome in a Sudanese patient: a case report.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is a rare genodermatosis characterised by defects in the development of ectodermal tissues, primarily affecting hair, teeth, and sweat glands. It can be inherited in autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked patterns. Mutations in the EDA, EDAR, or EDARADD genes, which encode Ectodysplasin-A, the EDA receptor, and a death domain, respectively, are responsible for HED. A 36-year-old Sudanese male presented with hypohidrosis, hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and Ichthyosis without an obvious family history of the HED syndrome. Six members of his exten…

Ectodermal dysplasia and cholesteatoma: A cross-sectional analysis of otologic issues.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have also associated cleft palate with increased cholesteatoma risk. Despite this close relation, the incidence of cholesteatoma and associated otologic issues in patients with ectodermal dysplasia types highly associated with cleft palate (EDT-ACPs) has not been formally analyzed. This study provides insight to guide clinicians caring for patients with ED types associated with cleft palate. METHODS: Individuals with TP63 disorders and Goltz syndrome/Focal Dermal Hypoplasia in the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasia database were contacted for participati…

Clinical and Genetic Characteristics of Ectodermal Dysplasia in Four Indian Children.

INTRODUCTION: Ectodermal dysplasias (EDs) affect structures derived from the ectoderm such as skin, its appendages, nail, and teeth. In this series, we describe four patients presenting with a clinical phenotype of dysplasia of one or more ectodermal structures who underwent next-generation sequencing for mutational analysis. CASE SERIES: The clinical phenotype of three patients was hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) and one patient was diagnosed with autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS) type 1. Two patients with classical clinical features of X-linked HED (XLHED) had mutations in EDA…

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia: A case report with review and latest updates.

Ectodermal dysplasia represents a group of inherited conditions in which two or more ectodermally derived anatomical structures fail to develop resulting in most notably anhidrosis/hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis and hypodontia. It is a xlinked recessive disorder with male predominance. We report a classical case in a 17-year-old male with emphasis on review of literature and latest updates.

Influence of Reduced Saliva Production on Phonation in Patients With Ectodermal Dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with ectodermal dysplasia (ED) suffer from an inherited disorder in the development of the ectodermal structures. Besides the main symptoms, i.e. significantly reduced formation/expression of teeth, hair and sweat glands, a decreased saliva production is objectively accounted. In addition to difficulties with chewing/swallowing, ED patients frequently report on the subjective impression of rough and hoarse voices. A correlation between the reduced production of saliva and an affliction of the voice has not yet been investigated objectively for this rare disease. METHODS: F…

A case of body dysmorphic disorder in an adolescent with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

We report the case of an adolescent with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, who had obsessive-compulsive disorder and was later diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). BDD is a highly distressing, adolescent-onset disorder that may lead to social isolation, the development of comorbid mental health disorders and suicidality. Patients typically lack insight into their BDD and frequently present to dermatologists for medical treatment. In this paper, we address the challenges faced when working with patients with BDD.
