There is a great variety of potential therapies in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis, surgical intervention being the most invasive. The most frequently applied therapies are corticosteroid injections, pain-relieving medication (NSAID) and physical therapy. Though many studies have been conducted, a "gold standard" in the treatment of LE is not available. Perhaps this is explained by a lack of methodological quality of many of these studies.

The evaluation of elbow pain can be challenging because of the complexity of the joint and its central location in the upper extremity. Diagnosing the injury correctly requires an understanding of the anatomy of the elbow, which includes three articulations, two ligament complexes, four muscle groups and three major nerves. The history should be directed at pinpointing the location of symptoms and the activities that cause the patient's pain. It is important to identify the specific musculotendinous structures that are at risk for overuse or have been injured through overuse. Mechanical sympto

Are the well established methods for operative treatment of fractures about the elbow and their results also applicable to elderly people with osteoporosis? In a retrospective study 23 of 32 patients with 33 operatively stabilized fractures of the distal humerus and the proximal radius and ulna, could be reviewed and personally questioned. The fracture type, the complications and the range of motion of the elbow were analysed and classified. Over 75% of the cases presented with a good to excellent range of motion with no increase of complications. 80% of the patients were satisfied with their

We report four cases with six episodes of concurrent carpal and elbow fractures or dislocations. Few such combinations of injuries have been reported in the literature. We discuss the mechanism and management of such injuries and conclude that elbow injuries should be suspected in severe carpal injuries. Surgical treatment may be required in their management.

Tennis elbow is a common overuse syndrome. It is accompanied by degenerative changes in the enthesis of the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle. It may be best diagnosed clinically by eliminating other possible causes of lateral elbow pain. Physical methods should always be selected as initial treatment. Immobilisation is the initial advice that most doctors give: ultrasound has been shown to be effective in a placebo-controlled, double-blind trial, and low energy laser has been found to reduce objective but not subjective symptoms. Other forms of physical treatment like electrotherapy, ther

Elbow arthroscopy is a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool for the orthopedic surgeon. In the standard technique, the patient is positioned supine with the arm suspended overhead and an anterolateral portal is used. We have modified this technique by placing the patient in a prone position and using a proximal medial portal. Use of the prone position improves scope mobility, facilitates joint manipulation, and provides more complete intraarticular visualization. This technique simplifies the treatment of a wide variety of elbow pathology, including loose bodies, osteochondritis dissecans, p

Deep sepsis occurred after fourteen (9 per cent) of 156 elbow-replacement procedures in 140 patients. This high frequency of infection was attributed to several factors. First, the patients were drawn from a population that was at high risk of infection, because rheumatoid arthritis and post-traumatic arthritis were the indications for arthroplasty. Second, many of the patients had had prior surgery, which significantly (p less than 0.02) increased the risk of sepsis in those with rheumatoid arthritis. Third, some patients had surgery after the arthroplasty, which also seemed to predispose to

INTRODUCTION: Constrain of a total elbow replacement and elbow arthrodesis are too much for the working population to bear. As such interpositional elbow arthroplasty using fascia lata autologous graft to reconstruct the elbow joint is a viable option in this age group.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: 8 patients were operated for arthritic stiff elbow, and joint reconstruction was done using fascia lata autologous graft, with out the use of any hinged external fixator. Pre-operative and post-operative functional assessment was done using Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) and statistically measured us

OBJECTIVE: To derive a maximally sensitive decision rule for clinical practice to rule out the need for x-ray examination after elbow injury in adults and children.
METHODS: Emergency department patients with acute elbow injury were recruited. Practitioners used their usual judgement to assess whether x-ray examination was required. Radiographs were reported on by radiologists blind to clinical assessment. Patients not x-rayed were followed-up at 7 days by telephone interview, and those with ongoing pain were recalled for assessment. Recursive partitioning was used to derive a maximally sensi

PURPOSE: With the slice thickness routinely used in elbow MRI, small or subtle lesions may be overlooked or misinterpreted as insignificant. To compare 1 mm slice thickness MRI (1 mm MRI) with deep learning reconstruction (DLR) to 3 mm slice thickness MRI (3 mm MRI) without/with DLR, and 1 mm MRI without DLR regarding image quality and diagnostic performance for elbow tendons and ligaments.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 53 patients between February 2021 and January 2022, who underwent 3 T elbow MRI, including T2-weighted fat-saturated coronal 3 mm and 1 mm MRI without/with DLR. T

Total elbow arthroplasty is effective for pain relief and the functional improvement of severe symptomatic hemophilic osteoproliferative arthropathy. Nevertheless, high complication rates have been reported. This report describes clinical results obtained at 30-month follow-up of total elbow arthroplasty in a hemophilic patient with severe flexion contracture. A 50-year-old patient with advanced left elbow hemophilic arthropathy underwent unlinked total elbow arthroplasty. He had sustained an intraoperative fracture of the medial part of a supracondylar humerus complication. To control periope

BACKGROUND: Complex elbow injuries consist of fractures of one or several of the bony stabilizers of the elbow, including the radial head, proximal ulna, coronoid process, collateral ligaments, and capsular complex. These injuries, if not properly treated, were reported to have a poor prognosis with recurrent instability, stiffness, posttraumatic arthrosis, and pain. This study was conducted to review clinical outcomes after fracture stabilization and ligament repair with a postoperative custom-made progressive stretching (CMPS) elbow splint in the treatment of complex elbow injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Pooled meta-analyses of statistically and clinically heterogeneous data of randomised-controlled studies are difficult to interpret. Therefore, a qualitative study-by-study assessment was thought to be of greater relevance, to physicians confronted with a therapy-resistant tennis elbow patient, to determine the effectiveness of shock wave therapy (SWT) for lateral elbow tendinopathy.
SETTING: Orthopaedic clinic.
METHODS: Randomized trials were identified from a current search of The Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group specialized register of trials, the Cochrane Central R

Twenty fresh cadaveric elbows were used to evaluate the proximity of neurovascular structures to the six arthroscopic portals of the elbow at different positions. After distention of the joint, 4-mm Steinmann pins were introduced into the elbow from the portal's entry points. After surgical dissection, the proximity of the neurovascular structures to the pins was measured in 5 different positions. The radial nerve showed significant proximity to the anterolateral portal in full elbow flexion, full elbow extension, and forearm supination with 10%, 20%, and 10% nerve-pin contacts, respectively.

Total elbow arthroplasty has become a reliable treatment option for patients with rheumatoid arthritis as well as primary or posttraumatic arthrosis. The aim of this study is to present the indications, operative technique and results for the implantation of an Acclaim elbow prosthesis. Case reports are given to demonstrate the indications for prosthesis implantation. Furthermore, the follow-up results are reported for 65 patients after implantation of an Acclaim prosthesis. Pre- and postoperative pain were evaluated using the visual analogue scale. The pain level decreased from 8.0 to 2.3 pos

BACKGROUND: Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most common entrapment neuropathy after carpal tunnel syndrome. Treatment may be conservative or surgical, but optimal management remains controversial. This is an update of a review first published in 2011 and previously updated in 2012 and 2016.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness and safety of conservative and surgical treatment for ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE). We intended to test whether: - surgical treatment is effective in reducing symptoms and signs and in increasing nerve function; - conservative treatment is
