Relationship Between Electroencephalography and Seizure Outcome in Typical Absence Seizures in Children.

BACKGROUND: Typical absence seizures (TAS) are seen in idiopathic generalized epilepsy. Electroencephalography (EEG) contributes to syndrome characterization and counseling in an area where genetics does not currently play a significant role. Prominent interictal EEG findings are seen in juvenile absence epilepsy (JAE) and are thus thought to be associated with less favorable outcome in any TAS case despite lack of evidence. Our study evaluates EEG findings and their association with seizure outcomes in children with TAS. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 123 children over 10 years with …

The Association between Electroencephalography with Auditory Steady-State Response and Postoperative Delirium.

Delirium is a disorder of consciousness and a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction and poor prognosis. We hypothesized that preoperative gamma activities would be linked to postoperative delirium. We enrolled 71 subjects for elective surgery and recorded auditory steady-state response (ASSR) by electroencephalography (EEG) before the surgery and examined postoperative delirium with DSM-5. The EEG data were analyzed for baseline power, and ASSR evoked power (EP) and phase-locking factor (PLF) within the gamma range. Postoperative delirium was found in 18 patients (delirium group) but not in 53…

Inter-observer reliability for amplitude-integrated electroencephalography in the newborn with perinatal asphyxia.

INTRODUCTION: Amplitude integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) is a tool widely used for neuromonitoring in the critical neonate. In the patient with perinatal asphyxia, its interpretation is key to identifying candidates for therapeutic hypothermia, detecting subclinical seizures and providing pronostic information. Our aim was to analyze the concordance in the interpretation of aEEG among neonatologists with different levels of experience. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Unicenter retrospective study of newborns ≥ 35 weeks with perinatal asphyxia included consecutively over a two-year period and mo…

Understanding emerging regulation: The role of frontal electroencephalography asymmetry and negative affectivity.

The present study examined frontal electroencephalography (EEG) asymmetry and negative affectivity (NA) as predictors of infant behaviors during the Still-Face Paradigm (SFP). It was hypothesized that infants with lower NA subscale scores who also demonstrate greater left frontal activation would exhibit more frequent social engagement and self-soothing behaviors during the SFP. Mothers reported infant temperament at 6-12 months of age (N = 62), and EEG was recorded during a baseline task and the SFP. Social engagement, distress, and self-soothing behaviors were coded during the SFP. A three-f…

Efficacy of Lacosamide in a Patient with Refractory Generalized Epilepsy Based on Video Electroencephalography.

A 20-year-old man with drug-resistant generalized epilepsy (GE) was admitted for video electroencephalography (vEEG) monitoring under treatment with multiple antiepileptic drugs, including levetiracetam (3,000 mg/day), valproic acid (800 mg/day), and lacosamide (LCM) (100 mg/day). No seizures were noted after the withdrawal of levetiracetam. However, after the withdrawal of LCM, atypical absence seizures with a 2- to 2.5-Hz generalized spike and wave complex frequently appeared, followed by subsequent generalized-onset tonic-clonic seizures. After re-administration of LCM, the seizures and epi…

Classification Methods Based on Complexity and Synchronization of Electroencephalography Signals in Alzheimer's Disease.

Electroencephalography (EEG) has long been studied as a potential diagnostic method for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The pathological progression of AD leads to cortical disconnection. These disconnections may manifest as functional connectivity alterations, measured by the degree of synchronization between different brain regions, and alterations in complex behaviors produced by the interaction among wide-spread brain regions. Recently, machine learning methods, such as clustering algorithms and classification methods, have been adopted to detect disease-related changes in functional connectivit…

Holistic Integration in the Processing of Chinese Characters as Revealed by Electroencephalography Frequency Tagging.

It is debated whether perceptual expertise of nonface objects, such as visual words, is indicated by holistic processing, which is regarded as a marker of perceptual expertise of faces. We address this question by frequency-tagged electroencephalography. Different parts of real or pseudo Chinese characters are presented at distinctive frequencies (6 or 7.2 Hz), which induce frequency-tagged steady-state visual-evoked potentials at occipital brain areas. The intermodulation response (e.g., 6 + 7.2 = 13.2 Hz) would emerge when holistic integration takes place. Our results suggest that the interm…

Is intracranial electroencephalography useful for planning resective surgery in intractable epilepsy with ulegyria?

OBJECTIVE: Intractable epilepsy patients with ulegyria could be candidates for resective surgery. Complete resection of ulegyria in the epileptogenic hemisphere is associated with favorable seizure outcome, although the risk of postoperative functional deficits is higher. The authors evaluated the extent of resection and postsurgical outcomes in epilepsy patients with ulegyria who underwent intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) monitoring prior to resection to clarify the efficacy of iEEG-guided partial resection of ulegyria. METHODS: Ten consecutive epilepsy patients with ulegyria (7 ma…
