Emotional Dysregulation is a frequent challenge in clinical child psychiatric contexts. The Stress-Arousal-Regulation-Treatment for Children aged six to twelve (START-Kids, Dixius u. Möhler, 2021a), was developed as low threshold treatment tool for children with emotional dysregulation. The program is based on principles of dialectic behavioral therapy. The present article focuses feasibility and a first evaluation of this innovative treatment tool for emotionally dysregulated children. 23 child psychiatric patients aged six to twelve years took part in this eight weeks program with two group

BACKGROUND: Comorbid borderline personality disorder (BPD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) predict poorer treatment outcomes. Available treatments for BPD and psychological trauma are often phase-based, first ensuring stabilization of dysregulated behaviors and emotions and later focusing on treating trauma. This study investigates the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of combining dialectical behavioral therapy group skills training (DBT-ST), consisting of mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal-effectiveness skills, with eye movement

Practicing CBT skills outside of therapy sessions is a core component of effective treatment, yet meaningful engagement can be difficult during periods of elevated psychological distress. Smartphone-based ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) offer a promising approach to support real-time skill use, but most research has focused on frequency rather than quality of engagement. This study examined the quality of CBT skills practice in a 28-day smartphone-based EMI following inpatient discharge and explored its associations with internal context and intervention effectiveness. Twenty-three a

Background: This systematic review aggregates research on psychotherapeutic interventions for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents. PTSD in this demographic presents differently from adults, necessitating tailored therapeutic approaches. In children and adolescents, PTSD arises from exposure to severe danger, interpersonal violence, or abuse, leading to significant behavioral and emotional disturbances that jeopardize long-term development. The review focuses on describing PTSD within two age groups, children (6 to 12 years) and adolescents (12 to 18 years), while

Music-based interventions are gaining traction in therapeutic settings, yet evidence remains centered on Western music and populations. This gap is particularly important for Middle Eastern populations, where the Maqam Melodic System-a tonal framework traditionally associated with specific emotions-remains unexplored using modern neuroscientific methods. The Maqam Saba, traditionally associated with sadness, contains quartertones absent from Western scales and unfamiliar to non-Arab listeners, raising the question of whether its emotional associations are universal or culturally specific. This paper presents the case of "Ava" a woman in her late 40s diagnosed with ICD-11 Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), whose life was shaped by chronic childhood abuse, pervasive shame, and intense self-criticism. Ava struggled with intrusive trauma memories, relational hypervigilance, fears of compassion, and enduring guilt regarding the impact of past substance misuse on her children. A phased Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) approach was implemented to address her chronic threat state (persistent hypervigilance and relational alarm) and facilitate a shift from shame-based self-a

OBJECTIVES: Distress and physical symptoms are ongoing for early-stage breast cancer survivors on adjuvant hormone therapy. While previous qualitative research has focused on reporting the outcomes of distress and symptoms, as well as medication adherence, this study aimed to understand the link between symptoms and distress, exploring specifically how symptoms are distressing to inform interventions.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A qualitative design was used with online semi-structured interviews conducted with 23 women with Stage I-III hormone receptor positive breast cancer, living in the United Ki

Family-based treatment (FBT) for anorexia nervosa (AN) is an empirically supported treatment for this disorder. Derived from several different schools of family therapy, it is a highly focused approach that initially targets weight restoration under parental management at home. However, the view that manualized FBT is solely a behavioral therapy directing parents to refeed their children AN with the single purpose of weight gain is a common but misleading over simplification of the therapy. Indeed, weight restoration is the main goal only in phase 1 of this 3-phase treatment. When practiced wi

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-Behavioural Family Therapy (CBFT) can be an effective psychological approach for children with beta-thalassaemia major, increasing compliance to treatment, lessening the emotional burden of disease, and improving the quality of life of caregivers.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty-eight beta-thalassaemic major children that followed CBFT for one year were compared with twenty-eight age-matched healthy children, focusing particularly on behavioural, mood, and temperamental characteristics as well as compliance with chelation, assessed using the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL),

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing evidence base supporting the utility of restitutive speech-language treatments for individuals with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). In contrast, there is limited research investigating treatment approaches that offer counselling to this population. Given that people with PPA are susceptible to negative impacts on their psychosocial well-being, research is needed to address this underrepresented area of inquiry. This paper provides qualitative research findings from a pilot and feasibility study in which individuals with PPA completed a novel, telehealth-base

Various aspects of guilt are frequent problems of patients suffering from PTSD, though they have been included into the diagnostic criteria for PTSD just in the present version DSM-5. Some studies indicate limitation of effectiveness of exposure therapy in PTSD patients with predominant emotions of anger or guilt. The aim of this paper is to present cognitive conceptualization of guilt in PTSD proposed by Kubany, and a treatment protocol resulting from this conceptualization. The clinical application of the protocol is illustrated with preliminary results of systematic observation of 8 patient

BACKGROUND: A recently updated Cochrane review supports the efficacy of psychotherapy for borderline personality disorder (BPD).
AIMS: To evaluate the effects of standalone and add-on psychotherapeutic treatments more concisely.
METHOD: We applied the same methods as the 2020 Cochrane review, but focused on adult samples and comparisons of active treatments and unspecific control conditions. Standalone treatments (i.e. necessarily including individual psychotherapy as either the sole or one of several treatment components) and add-on interventions (i.e. complementing any ongoing individual B

The integration of extended reality (XR) technologies-virtual (VR) and augmented (AR)-into child sexual abuse (CSA) interventions has grown over the past decade. This systematic review explores the application, efficacy, and ethical implications of XR tools in psychosocial, forensic, preventive, and therapeutic approaches addressing CSA. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, identifying 11 empirical studies published between 2014 and 2024. Three main intervention categories emerged: (1) professional training, (2) prevention

Previously, we reported posttreatment findings from a randomized pilot study testing a new attachment-based parenting intervention for mothers enrolled in substance-use treatment and caring for children ages birth to 3 years (N.E. Suchman, C. DeCoste, N. Castiglioni, T. McMahon, B. Rounsaville, & L. Mayes, 2010). The Mothers and Toddlers Program (MTP) is a 12-session, weekly individual parenting therapy that aims to enhance maternal capacity for reflective functioning and soften harsh and distorted mental representations of parenting. In a randomized pilot study, 47 mothers who were enrolled i

Education is regarded as an avenue for success while the under-educated are disproportionately more likely to be incarcerated and remain within the correctional system. Current prison reforms have focused on increasing access to educational programming. However, these programs are not designed to address the lack of control, poor self-regulation, low emotional intelligence, inadequate social skills, or lack of internal motivation that hinder progress. Art therapy has been found effective in mitigating these impediments. Recognizing this, a partnership arose between a state Department of Correc

There is a growing interest in clinical interventions targeting emotion regulation difficulties across mental health conditions. Experiential dynamic therapies (EDTs) are transdiagnostic, affect-focused, short-term psychodynamic therapy models that emphasize in-session emotional processing. This review provides a 10-year update on the efficacy of EDTs for mood, anxiety, personality and somatic symptom disorders in adults and children/adolescents. A comprehensive search identified 57 randomized controlled trials (n = 4330) conducted in Western (k = 38; n = 3178) and non-Western countries (k = 1

This review focuses on recent changes in the clinical, pathogenetic and therapeutic developments with regards to Alopecia Areata. Some new clinical forms and some phenomena have been described for the first time in recent years. Several phenomena previously observed such as the Renbok, the Koebner and the possibility that an exclamation mark hair can resume its physiological growth have been confirmed. The pathogenetic role of cytotoxic cells is increasingly evident, as well as the deficit of cells and the factors regulating the autoimmune response. The concept of immune privilege of the hair

Language brokering, in which children interpret for non-native-speaking parents, is common among refugee families but is often overlooked as a potential psychosocial stressor. Studies indicate that 75-90% of immigrant and refugee children serve as language brokers, with 18-20% experiencing clinically significant psychological distress related to this role. Excessive or emotionally charged interpreting may lead to parentification, anxiety, and developmental disruption. We present a case of a nine-year-old Syrian refugee girl who developed anxiety, somatic symptoms, academic decline, and emotion

Schema therapy (ST) is an integrative therapy, which combines elements of cognitive behavior therapy, attachment theory, object relations theory and emotional-focused models. Schema therapy is an effective treatment for patients with personality disorders and other chronic psychological disorders. Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMSs) are a main concept in schema theory referring to self-defeating, core themes or patterns. They develop as a result of traumatic or toxic childhood experiences and the frustration of the core emotional needs in childhood. To date 18 EMSs have been identified and groupe
