Positive functions of emotions in achievement sports.

This article presents the results of two research projects on the emotions of men engaged in achievement outdoor sports. The conditions were analyzed under which emotions carry out positive functions. The question strikes us as a fundamental one, because it is of crucial importance when it comes to increasing sportspeople's success. The theoretical framework applied was that of microfunctionalism. The method, of a qualitative nature, was based on in-depth interviews, each lasting between 1.5 and 2 hr with a total of 14 sportspersons. The results show that in order for emotions to fulfill posit

Cognitive and Emotional Predictors of Decision-Making in Adults: Roles of Cognitive Functions and Emotion Regulation Difficulties.

OBJECTIVES: The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a widely used measure of decision-making that mimics real-life situations involving uncertainty … not significantly related to risky choices, suggesting a weaker role than previously attributed to emotional intelligence. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that cognitive functions, particularly attentional control, are more strongly associated with advantageous decision-making, especially during later stages of the task. These findings underscore the primacy of cogn …

Psychosocial Factors Linked to Online Gaming: Differences Between Current Gamers, Non-current Gamers and Non-gamers.

The rise of gaming and gaming-related problems has led to an interest in finding differences between gamers and non-gamers. The present study investigates whether there are differences in psychological variables (prosociality, emotional intelligence, social support, and mental health) between current gamers, non-current gamers, and non-gamers. For this purpose, a quantitative study was conducted with a convenience sample of Spanish university students (N = 798, Meanage = 21.48, SDage = 5.01). One-way ANOVAs and MANOVAs were performed to compare the psychological variables between the three gro…

Pathways from chronic stress to cognitive decline: A multi-cohort mediation analysis of inflammation and immune-related gene expression.

Chronic stress is a well-established risk factor for poorer cognitive aging, but the biological mechanisms underlying these associations remain unclear. Inflammatory processes have been proposed as key mechanisms, but evidence across large, independent cohorts is limited. We conducted statistical mediation analyses to examine whether inflammatory biomarkers and immune-related gene expression show indirect effect estimates consistent with mediating associations between chronic stress and cognitive performance in two population-based cohorts: Midlife in the United States Study (MIDUS; N = 209-27

Humanity Test-EEG Data Mediated Artificial Intelligence Multi-Person Interactive System.

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are widely applied in various industries and everyday life, particularly in fields such as virtual assistants, healthcare, and education. However, this paper highlights that existing research has often overlooked the philosophical and media aspects. To address this, we developed an interactive system called "Human Nature Test". In this context, "human nature" refers to emotion and consciousness, while "test" involves a critical analysis of AI technology and an exploration of the differences between humanity and technicality. Additionally, through experiment

Research Progress and Application Prospect of Facial Micro-Expression Analysis in Forensic Psychiatry.

Research on facial micro-expression analysis has been going on for decades. Micro-expression can reflect the true emotions of individuals, and it has important application value in assisting auxiliary diagnosis and disease monitoring of mental disorders. In recent years, the development of artificial intelligence and big data technology has made the automatic recognition of micro-expressions possible, which will make micro-expression analysis more convenient and more widely used. This paper reviews the development of facial micro-expression analysis and its application in forensic psychiatry,

Conceptualizing gambling disorder with the process model of emotion regulation.

Introduction Nowadays, gambling disorder (GD) is a worldwide health issue and there is a growing need to both improve our understanding of this disorder and to tailor specific interventions for its treatment. Moreover, theoretical models and preliminary empirical results suggest that difficulty in regulating emotional states might be involved in GD. However, literature describing clinical and theoretical aspects of emotional dysregulation among pathological gamblers (PGs) shows a lack of systematic description. Objectives We aimed to provide, within an exhaustive theoretical framework of emoti

Altered language-salience network connectivity in schizophrenia and differential associations with emotion regulation.

INTRODUCTION: Emotion regulation is a key domain of social cognition, and its impairment contributes to poor psychosocial functioning in schizophrenia (SZ). The "Managing Emotions" (ME) branch of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) is widely used to assess this ability, yet its neural correlates remain unclear. METHODS: We examined resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) associated with MSCEIT-ME performance in 56 patients with schizophrenia and 56 healthy controls matched for age, sex, and years of education. Seed-based correlation analyses focused on three lar…

Retinal Microvasculature and Emotional, Behavioral, and Cognitive Outcomes at School Age.

BACKGROUND: The retinal microvasculature can serve as a window into the intracerebral vasculature, and an adverse retinal microvasculature is linked to neurocognitive disease and psychopathology in adults. We hypothesized that associations of retinal vessel calibers with emotional, behavioral, and cognitive outcomes may be present in school-age children. METHODS: This study among 3866 children was embedded in a population-based cohort study from early fetal life. Retinal microvasculature measurements were obtained from retinal photographs at age 6. At ages 6, 10, and 14, total, internalizing,

Facial emotion recognition in children with high functioning autism and children with social phobia.

Recognizing facial affect is essential for effective social functioning. This study examines emotion recognition abilities in children aged 7-13 years with High Functioning Autism (HFA = 19), Social Phobia (SP = 17), or typical development (TD = 21). Findings indicate that all children identified certain emotions more quickly (e.g., happy < anger, disgust, sad < fear) and more accurately (happy) than other emotions (disgust). No evidence was found for negative interpretation biases in children with HFA or SP (i.e., all groups showed similar ability to discriminate neutral from non-neutral faci

Medical improv as a strategy for creative problem-solving and positive change.

Unsafe staffing, bullying and incivility, and burnout and compassion fatigue are examples of three chronic and pervasive problems that nurses face. At their roots, they involve issues associated with emotional intelligence and communication-related skills, also known as "soft" skills. For nurses to be effective and positive change agents in addressing these and other challenging problems, they must be proficient in such skills and competencies. This article examines the importance of soft skills in addressing key professional and practice-related challenges, and discusses strategies for develo…

Overconfident, but angry at least. AI-Based investigation of facial emotional expressions and self-assessment bias in human adults.

Metacognition and facial emotional expressions both play a major role in human social interactions [1, 2] as inner narrative and primary communicational display, and both are limited by self-monitoring, control and their interaction with personal and social reference frames. The study aims to investigate how metacognitive abilities relate to facial emotional expressions, as the inner narrative of a subject might project subconsciously and primes facial emotional expressions in a non-social setting. Subjects were presented online to a set of digitalised short-term memory tasks and attended a sc

The relationship between AI anxiety and academic motivation among university students: the mediating role of emotion regulation and the moderating role of gender.

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in university students' writing, information retrieval, knowledge organisation and task completion. Although AI tools may improve learning convenience and access to resources, they may also generate technological uncertainty, pressure to adapt to new competencies and concerns about future development. As an important negative emotional response in intelligent technology contexts, AI anxiety may be closely associated with university students' academic motivation and psychological adaptation. METHODS: This cross-sectio

Serotonin and the neural processing of facial emotions in adults with autism: an fMRI study using acute tryptophan depletion.

CONTEXT: People with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have lifelong deficits in social behavior and differences in behavioral as well as neural responses to facial expressions of emotion. The biological basis to this is incompletely understood, but it may include differences in the role of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which modulate facial emotion processing in health. While some individuals with ASD have significant differences in the serotonin system, to our knowledge, no one has investigated its role during facial emotion processing in adults with ASD and control subjects using acut

Emotion recognition and human-robot interaction: a systematic review of methods and applications.

Physical human-robot interaction involves a tightly coupled cognitive interaction with the user. The emotional state of the user is therefore a key factor influencing engagement, motivation, and long-term acceptance. This review explores recent developments in emotion-aware technologies, particularly facial expression recognition and multimodal affect detection, and their potential to make assistive robots more adaptive and human-centred. By analysing current methodologies, emerging trends, and ethical considerations, we show how the integration of emotional intelligence can transform robotic …

Empathic responsiveness of children and adolescents with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder.

Previous studies have shown reduced empathic responsiveness to others' emotions in preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and an intellectual disability. However, age and intelligence may promote children's empathic responsiveness. Therefore, we examined the empathic responsiveness in normally intelligent school-aged children and adolescents with a clinical diagnosis of ASD (n = 151) and in a typically developing comparison group (n = 50), using structured observations and parent reports. Based on the observations, participants' responses to the emotional displays of an interviewer w

Emotion Regulation in Sexually Abused Preschoolers.

Emotion regulation is closely related to mental health in children and adults. Low emotion regulation competencies have been found in school-aged sexually abused girls. The aim of the present study was to investigate emotion regulation competencies in sexually abused preschool girls and boys using a multi-informant approach. Emotion regulation was assessed in 62 sexually abused and 65 non-abused preschoolers using the Emotion Regulation Checklist and the MacArthur Story Stem Battery. Both parents and educators reported lower emotion regulation competencies in sexually abused preschoolers, espe
