[Worm-diseases].

Intestinal parasites are common among labourers from foreign countries and in immigrants. Some worm-infections like ascaridiasis or enterobiasis occur in children quite often even in the cold climates. In cases of ascaridiasis only a heavy infection causes clinical symptoms. The diagnosis is made through the detection of eggs in the stools, as all the other worm-infections are diagnosed from the stool-test. Piperazine-derivatives are highly effective against ascaris; another useful drug is Pyrantel-Pamoate. Toxocara canis, which affects normally only dogs, can occur occasionally in humans. Its…

[Perianal streptococcal dermatitis in children].

Perianal dermatitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (beta-haemolytic Lance-field group A) was diagnosed in four children, three boys aged I, 6 and 8 years and a girl aged 2 years. Perianal itching in children is most frequently attributed to enterobiasis (Enterobius vermicularis); fissures due to scratching can complicate this situation. Perianal streptococcal dermatitis can effectively be treated with oral penicillin, in combination with local antibiotic application (fucidin, mupirocin).

[The role of Enterobius vermicularis in etiopathogenesis of appendicitis].

The authors present 14 cases of enterobiasis of appendix observed between 1991-94, on a total of 1093 appendectomies. The presence of the parasite was associated, in the majority of cases, to a chronic appendicitis. The symptomatology imitates an attack of acute appendicitis, but the true nature of the disease is diagnosed only through a histological examination. There is probably an etiopathogenic relationship between. E. vermicularis and chronic appendicitis, whereas the relationship between the parasite and acute appendicitis is rare and very disputed.

Enterobius vermicularis Infestation Mimicking Rectal Malignancy.

Enterobius vermicularis is a common intestinal nematode of humans that can be considered relatively harmless. A polypoid lesion mimicking malignancy was detected in the rectum of a 66-year-old female patient who had been operated for sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma in the past. Histopathological examination of the lesion revealed no malignancy but there was adult E. vermicularis nematodes and eggs. In this case report, we aimed to present an enterobiasis infestation that produces non-necrotizing granuloma tissue in the rectum.

The presence of pinworms (Enterobius sp.) in the mesenteric lymph nodes, liver and lungs of a chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes.

This report describes a case of fatal enterobiasis caused by Enterobius sp. in the mesenteric lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels of mesentery, blood vessels of the liver and lungs of a chimpanzee from Qingdao Zoo, China. Based on pathological findings, it is likely that the pinworms obtained access to these organs via the lymphatic or haematogenous pathway. As far as we are aware, this is the first reported case of Enterobius sp. in the mesenteric lymph nodes and blood vessels of the lungs and veins of the hepatic triad in a chimpanzee.

[Prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infections among children in China from 2016 to 2021: a meta-analysis].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infections among children in China from 2016 to 2021, so as to provide insights into enterobiasis control and formulation of the enterobiasis control strategy among children. METHODS: Publications pertaining to the prevalence of E. vermicularis infections among children were retrieved from Wanfang Data, CNKI, VIP and PubMed databases published from January 2016 to June 2023. Eligible publications were screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the publication bias was evaluated using the assessment tool for p…

[The prevalence of intestinal parasites in the students of two primary schools in Ankara].

Four hundred stool samples obtained from two different primary school students were examined for intestinal parasite. Cellophane tape technique was also applied in order to detect the Enterobiasis incidence. It has been observed that the parasite incidence were 13.5% in TED College Students whereas 30.5% in the Incesu Primary School. It has been also concluded that the highest infection rate was connected with two parasites, namely Giardia intestinalis (11.5%) and Enterobius vermicularis (8%).

Intramural Ova of Enterobius vermicularis in the Appendix-An Egg-Topic Location!

We report an unusual case of appendicitis in a 9-year-old girl in whom the wall of the appendix contained necrotizing granulomas, as well as eggs of Enterobius vermicularis. Although luminal E vermicularis adult parasites are commonly identified in the appendix and luminal eggs are occasionally seen, intramural worms and eggs are rare. We are unaware of earlier reports of ectopic intramural eggs in the appendix. It is important to and make a correct diagnosis, as both, the patient, as well as the family should be treated for enterobiasis.

Intestinal parasites in homosexual men.

A study on the prevalence of intestinal parasites in a group of homosexual men, attending a sexually-transmitted diseases clinic in Glasgow, was undertaken. Of 118 men examined over an eight-month period, four, one of whom had symptoms of dysentery, were found to be infected with Entamoeba histolytica. Cysts of Iodamoeba buetschlii were also found in the stool of one of these men. A further two patients had giardiasis, and 11 men had enterobiasis. The importance of an awareness of these conditions is discussed.

Cutaneous manifestations of intestinal helminthic infections.

Several intestinal helminths may involve the skin. In cutaneous larva migrans and enterobiasis this is often the only organ involved, whereas hookworm and trichinosis are characterized by multisystem disease. The clinical spectrum of strongyloidiasis may range from a low-grade chronic dermatitis to a fulminant, often fatal, hyperinfection syndrome in the immunocompromised host. In the absence of recent breakthroughs in diagnostic testing, a meticulous history and knowledge of the life cycles and the often characteristic skin manifestations of these parasites remain essential to prompt diagnosi…

Genotypic Analysis of Enterobius vermicularis (Rhabditida: Oxyuridae, Linnaeus, 1758) Among Infected Individuals in Bulgaria: A First Phylogenetic Study.

Enterobiasis, caused by the nematode Enterobius vermicularis, remains a widespread public health issue, yet data regarding its genetic structure in Southeast Europe are scarce. This study presents the first molecular and phylogenetic characterization of E. vermicularis isolates from Bulgaria. Between 2022 and 2025, perianal tape test samples were collected from 128 individuals (92.2% of whom were children) with enterobiasis from 17 regions of the country. Molecular identification was performed via nested PCR targeting a 324 bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1)…

Impact of Enterobius vermicularis infection and mebendazole treatment on intestinal microbiota and host immune response.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on the association of enterobiasis and chronic inflammatory diseases have revealed contradictory results. The interaction of Enterobius vermicularis infection in particular with gut microbiota and induced immune responses has never been thoroughly examined. METHODOLOGY/FINDINGS: In order to answer the question of whether exposure to pinworm and mebendazole can shift the intestinal microbial composition and immune responses, we recruited 109 (30 pinworm-negative, 79 pinworm-infected) first and fourth grade primary school children in Taichung, Taiwan, for a gut micr…

Parasitic infections in primary and secondary schools in Giza Governorate, Egypt.

Four primary and two secondary schools at Kafr Hakeem, El-Mansuria and Berkash villages in Imbaba district were surveyed. Urine and stool specimens of 791 students were examined. Results revealed amoebiasis (22.4%); hymenolepiasis nana (6.2%); ancylostomiasis doudenale (5.7%); ascariasis (1.5%) and enterobiasis (1.1%). Parasites transmitted by autoinfection represented 15.9% of the total infected subjects; those transmitted by the skin penetration 27.2% and by contaminated food 56.9%. There was no statistical difference between primary and secondary school students as regards the rate of infec…
