A force-of-infection model for onchocerciasis and its applications in the epidemiological evaluation of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in the Volta River basin area.

A simple force-of-infection model for onchocerciasis has been developed for a study of the age-specific epidemiological trends during a period of vector control in the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in the Volta River basin area (OCP). The most important factors included in the model are the longevity of an infection, the aspect of super-infection, age-specific exposure, and the intensity of transmission during the pre-control period. The aim of the study was to determine the most appropriate statistics for the epidemiological evaluation in the OCP. There was generally good agreement between

The epidemiological impact, costs, and cost-effectiveness of implementing household contact investigation with tuberculosis preventive treatment in Nepal: a model-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: The burden of tuberculosis (TB) remains extremely high globally. It is increasingly recognized that contact investigation and preventive treatment are essential components of effective action to reduce TB. High-quality, local evidence of feasibility and impact is urgently needed to catalyse scale-up of preventive treatment in high-burden, resource-constrained settings. METHODS: We collected data on the costs and yields of contact investigation and implementation of three months of isoniazid and rifapentine (3HP) to treat latent TB infection (LTBI), among adult household members of

Predicting short-life-cycle species suitability via dynamic species distribution models: Applications in dengue and malaria epidemiology in Brazil.

Species Distribution Models (SDMs) are used to estimate environmental suitability and the potential distribution of organisms based on occurrence records and climatic variables. However, traditional approaches rely on long-term climatic averages, producing static predictions with no ability to capture seasonal variations that are particularly relevant for short life-cycle species, such as disease vectors. In this study, we developed Dynamic Species Distribution Models (DSDMs) for Ae. aegypti and An. darlingi by integrating monthly occurrence records and corresponding climatic variables from 20

Epidemiological impact of a 20- or 21-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in the Japan adult population: insights from a dynamic transmission model.

BACKGROUND: This study assessed the public health impact of adult pneumococcal vaccination strategies in Japan, comparing 20-valent (PCV20) and 21-valent (V116) pneumococcal conjugate vaccines with the current 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). METHODS: An age- and serotype-specific dynamic transmission model calibrated to Japanese data estimated reductions in invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) across age and risk groups. All scenarios assumed pediatric introduction of PCV20. RESULTS: Under current adult recommendations (targeting 65-year-olds), switching adult vaccination to PCV20

Spatiotemporal epidemiology, geographic hotspots, and risk factor associations of drug-resistant tuberculosis incidence in Indonesia: a Bayesian hierarchical modelling approach.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia ranks among the countries with the highest burden of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB), contributing approximately 7.4% of global cases, many of which are likely underdiagnosed. To support targeted public health surveillance and control efforts, this study aimed to characterize the spatiotemporal distribution of DR-TB incidence in Indonesia, identify geographic hotspots, and examine associations with health system and socioeconomic factors. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective analysis using annual DR-TB notification data from 2017 to 2022 across all 514 di

Epidemiological monitoring of sewage sludge and wastewater from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor using SARS-CoV-2 as a model.

This study explores the potential of sludge-based monitoring from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor for epidemiological surveillance, using SARS-CoV-2 as a model. We monitored SARS-CoV-2 copy numbers and mutations, and compared concentrations in sludge to concentrations in wastewater samples taken on the same days. From January to August 2021, 32 sludge samples were analyzed; 30 (93%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2, and copy numbers varied from 0.147 to 2.314 copies ×106/L. In wastewater samples collected on the same days, 31 (96%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2, and copy numbers ranged f

Bayesian spatial modelling of malaria burden in two contrasted eco-epidemiological facies in Benin (West Africa): call for localized interventions.

BACKGROUND: Despite a global decrease in malaria burden worldwide, malaria remains a major public health concern, especially in Benin children, the most vulnerable group. A better understanding of malaria's spatial and age-dependent characteristics can help provide durable disease control and elimination. This study aimed to analyze the spatial distribution of Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection and disease among children under five years of age in Benin, West Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional epidemiological and clinical survey was conducted using parasitological examination and rapid d

Differences in Ocular Complications Between Candida albicans and Non-albicans Candida Infection Analyzed by Epidemiology and a Mouse Ocular Candidiasis Model.

Objectives: Candida species are a major cause of hospital infections, including ocular candidiasis, but few studies have examined the propensities of specific species to invade the eye or the unique immunological responses induced. This study examined the frequency and characteristics of species-specific Candida eye infections by epidemiology and experiments using a mouse ocular candidiasis model. Methods: We reviewed medical records of candidemia patients from January 2012 to March 2017. We also evaluated ocular fungal burden, inflammatory cytokine and chemokine profiles, and inflammatory cel

Schizophrenia: do all roads lead to dopamine or is this where they start? Evidence from two epidemiologically informed developmental rodent models.

The idea that there is some sort of abnormality in dopamine (DA) signalling is one of the more enduring hypotheses in schizophrenia research. Opinion leaders have published recent perspectives on the aetiology of this disorder with provocative titles such as 'Risk factors for schizophrenia--all roads lead to dopamine' or 'The dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia--the final common pathway'. Perhaps, the other most enduring idea about schizophrenia is that it is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Those of us that model schizophrenia developmental risk-factor epidemiology in animals in an attempt to

[Chronic pulmonary berylliosis: a model of interaction between environment and genetic predisposition (Part 1). Mineralogy, toxicology, epidemiology and risk factors].

INTRODUCTION: The physico-chemical properties of beryllium (Be) are crucial for high technology industries. The inhalation of beryllium may cause, in certain individuals, a specific sensitisation (BeS) and lead, in some of them, to a pulmonary granulomatosis called chronic pulmonary berylliosis (CPB). BACKGROUND: Although there is no linear relationship between the level of exposure to Be and the risks of BeS and CPB, the highest exposures are associated with an increased risk. The specific influences of the chemical composition, the solubility and different types of Be on the risk of BeS an

Using observed load distributions with a simple model to analyse the epidemiology of sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on sea trout (Salmo trutta).

Sea lice are ectoparasites of salmonids that have been associated with the recent decline in sea trout numbers in north-west Europe. Observed patterns of louse load distribution between sea trout in the seas surrounding the UK, Ireland and Norway and a simple model have been used to analyse the epidemiology of lice. Loads are aggregated and deviate strongly from the Poisson distribution, although less than is observed with many other parasites. The louse numbers on fish from offshore sites are slightly less variable than for fish from coastal sites with comparable mean loads. Analysis of louse

[New tools for the study of animal trypanosomiasis in the Sudan: model-building of dangerous epidemiological passage by remote sensing geographic information systems].

Recent studies in a rangeland area of Burkina Faso showed that riparian tsetse flies (Glossina tachinoides and G. palpalis gambiensis) were found along the main rivers, but depending on their location, they had different hosts and were not infected by the same trypanosomoses. There were different epidemiological situations within a distance of a few kilometres, and local assessment of the trypanosome risk thus called for a global approach taking account of the environmental and human factors involved in the interfaces between hosts and vectors. Various types of information concerning entomolog

Epidemiological impact of three major respiratory coronavirus epidemics on influenza transmission: a multicountry analysis using surveillance data and mathematical modelling.

BACKGROUND: With the acceleration of globalisation and the increasing frequency of international exchanges, the risk of cross-border transmission of emerging respiratory infectious diseases (ERIDs) has significantly increased. Since the year 2002, epidemics of SARS, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and COVID-19 have exemplified this trend. These epidemics have impacted the prevalence and transmission of traditional respiratory infectious diseases (RIDs), such as influenza, which share similar transmission routes and control measures. To better explore the impact of ERIDs epidemics on in

Exploring different modelling approaches to forecast the community acute respiratory infections burden in children: an Italian epidemiological time series study.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in young children pose a significant global health challenge, leading to high rates of illness and death. They are estimated to be the fourth leading cause of mortality worldwide, particularly impacting children under five. This study aimed to identify the most effective time series model(s) for forecasting the epidemiological season burden of ARIs for the current 2023/2024 period in Italy. METHODS: Data on the burden of ARIs' in children aged 0-14 years were retrieved from Pedianet, an Italian paediatric primary care database which includes ove

Epidemiology and Risk Prediction Model of Multidrug-Resistant Organism Infections After Liver Transplant Recipients: A Single-Center Cohort Study.

Objective: Accurate risk stratification at an early stage may reduce the incidence of infection and improve the survival rate of recipients by adopting targeted interventions. This study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the risk of multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections in liver transplant (LT) recipients. Methods: We retrospectively collected clinical data from 301 LT recipients and randomly divided them into a training set (210 cases) and validation set (91 cases) using a 7:3 split ratio. Factors related to the risk of MDRO infection after LT were determined using univariate an

Development and Validation of a Cardiovascular Disease Risk Prediction Model for the Japanese Working Population: The Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

AIMS: This study aimed to develop a cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk model using data from a large occupational cohort. METHODS: A risk prediction model was developed using the routine health checkup data of 96,117 Japanese employees (84.0% men) who were 30-64 years of age and had no CVD at baseline. Cox proportional hazards regression models were employed to develop a risk model for assessing the 10-year CVD risk. Measures of discrimination and calibration were used to assess the predictive performance of the model and internal validation was used to examine potential overfitting. RESULTS:

Breast cancer risk assessment for prescription of menopausal hormone therapy in women with a family history of breast cancer: an epidemiological modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) can alleviate menopausal symptoms but has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. MHT prescription should be preceded by individualised risk/benefit evaluation; however, data outlining the impact of family history alongside different MHT therapeutic approaches are lacking. AIM: To quantify the risks associated with MHT use in women with varying breast cancer family histories of developing and dying from breast cancer. The epidemiological benefit of pyrethroid-pyrrole insecticide treated nets against malaria: an individual-based malaria transmission dynamics modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) are the most important malaria prevention tool in Africa but the rise of pyrethroid resistance in mosquitoes is likely impeding control. WHO has recommended a novel pyrethroid-pyrrole ITN following evidence of epidemiological benefit in two cluster-randomised, controlled trials (CRTs). It remains unclear how effective more costly pyrethroid-pyrrole ITNs are compared with other tools, or whether they should be deployed when budgets are limited. We aimed to compare the epidemiological impact and cost-effectiveness of the mass distribution of pyrethroid
