Unknown complication but nevertheless frequent, the spontaneous slipped epiphyseal injury in child with spina bifida states the problem for its diagnosis and its treatment. The authors give their experience about 12 cases in 10 children, insisting on the problem of the pseudo-infected and the pseudo-tumoral cases with an early diagnosis. A review of the literature is made about this subject. The treatment is generally orthopaedic excepted at the hip where it is surgical. A physiopathogenic study is made; explaining the mechanism, the frequency of this pathology and its complications.

Five personal cases of slipped capital femoral epiphysis in children submitted to pelvic radiotherapy and nineteen similar observations are reported. This complication appears around 6 years after radiotherapy; its frequency increases with high radiations doses and associated chemotherapy. Weakening of the epiphyseal plate is probably involved whatever radiations voltages. Surgical treatments should be confined to epiphysis fixation. As this complication can secondarily affect the other hip, preventive controlateral fixation must be discussed.

A 20-month-old infant sustained an irreducible epiphyseal fracture-dislocation of a proximal interphalangeal joint. The dorsal dislocation of the joint was associated with a 90 degree rotational displacement (Salter-Harris Type I fracture) of the epiphysis of the middle phalanx. This injury, which seems not to have been described previously, required open reduction through both volar and dorsal incisions because the intact collateral ligaments and extensor central slip did not permit adequate distraction of the joint.

We reviewed 32 children with 41 radiation-therapy associated slipped capital femoral epiphyses (RTASCFE). Ten were from the authors' institutions and 22 from the literature. Gender distribution was equal. The age at diagnosis of the malignancy was 4.3 +/- 3.1 years; the amount of radiation was 4,240 +/- 1,445 rads. Children with RTASCFE presented younger (10.4 +/- 3.2 years) than a routine SCFE. The average symptom duration was 5 +/- 6 months. Children with RTASCFE are usually thin (median weight, 10th percentile) in contrast to children with typical SCFE, who are usually obese (<95th percenti

BACKGROUND: The risk of developing avascular necrosis (AVN) in the setting of an unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) that is undergoing treatment with the modified Dunn procedure is not well understood. In addition, since the Loder classification of unstable is reportedly different than actual intraoperatively observed instability (that is, discontinuity between the femoral head epiphysis and proximal femoral metaphysis), the overall risk of developing AVN, as well as the potential complications of treatment of these patients with the modified Dunn procedure, are unknown.

One thousand six hundred thirty children with 1993 slipped capital femoral epiphyses were reviewed; 41.2% were girls and 58.8% were boys. There were 47.5% white, 24.8% black, 16.9% Amerindian, 7.4% Indonesian-Malay, 2.1% Native Australian/Pacific Islands, and 1.3% Indo-Mediterranean children. The diseased hip was unilateral in 77.7% and bilateral in 22.3% of the children, and chronic in 85.5% and acute in 14.5% of the children. Of the unilateral slips, 40.3% involved the right hip and 59.7% the left hip. The child's weight was greater than or equal to the ninetieth percentile in 63.2% of the c

Slipped capital femoral epiphyses (SCFE) is considered to be a very common disorder among adolescent age group. Multiple risk factors have been reported such as obesity, endocrine disorders, vitamin D deficiency, and panhypopituitarism. The diagnosis of SCFE is important especially in its early stages as this would prevent complications and delay in surgical intervention. The diagnosis is mainly done by radiological imaging and clinical evaluation. However, clinical evaluation is often overlooked. Herein, we present a case of a seven-year-old with SCFE that was diagnosed late due to negative r

BACKGROUND: Controversy remains about whether to pin the contralateral side in cases of unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Machine learning (ML) algorithms can be leveraged to identify complex, nonlinear patterns in data and allow for more accurate predictions on which patients may need a prophylactic pin. The goal of this study was to use ML to develop a predictive model for contralateral SCFE using previously established risk factors as well as emerging radiographic measures.
METHODS: This retrospective study from two large centers included all patients aged <18 years trea

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a rare occurrence in the paediatric hip. Diagnosis is challenging. It may have an insidious onset. It has potentially devastating consequences for the paediatric hip. There may also be sequelae that persist until adulthood. The femoral epiphysis typically remains in the acetabulum, and the femoral metaphysis displaces anterosuperiorly, leading to the typical sequelae of a shortened, externally rotated leg that exhibits obligate external rotation with flexion. The authors present a case of a 'reverse SCFE'. To the authors' knowledge, it is the first c

Given the long-term complications of undiagnosed slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and the importance of readable health information materials on positive, equitable health outcomes, the objective of this study was to determine if the online patient education materials regarding SCFE are written at or below accepted recommendations. The secondary objective was to determine whether the readability of these materials varied when stratified by the type of website. 'Slipped capital femoral epiphysis', 'SCFE', and 'slipped femoral head' were used as search queries in three common search engi

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a slippage of the femoral epiphysis (femoral head) on the femoral neck. Femoral epiphysis usually slips backward and inward because of body weight. This disorder mainly occurs during puberty. We report the very rare case of a child with cerebral palsy associated with spasticity of the limbs.

UNLABELLED: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a well-known disorder of the hip in adolescents that is characterized by displacement of the capital femoral epiphysis from the metaphysis through the physis. Multiple theories have been proposed for the aetiology of idiopathic SCFE, and it is likely a result of both biomechanical and biochemical factors. The association between human leucocyte antigen (HLA) and certain rheumatic diseases is well established. One of the strongest associations is between the HLA class I antigen B27 and ankylosing spondylitis. Several DRB 1 alleles are asso

Based on the recognition that even minor slip displacement in patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis can regularly produce acetabular cartilage damage and early clinical symptoms, subcapital realignment of the epiphysis should be considered, although a substantial risk of osteonecrosis has been reported. A modified surgical technique can be used in which the perfusion of the epiphysis via the medial femoral circumflex artery is actively protected during surgery by executing surgical dislocation of the joint and by developing a soft-tissue flap consisting of the retinaculum and the ext

Results of surgical treatment in 7 patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis have been presented. Slip angle ranged from 12(to 42(. Closed, in situ neck-head fixation with a single cannulated screw was performed. The screw was introduced percutaneously, through the anterior surface of the femoral neck into the center of the head and perpendicularly to its base. The method employed rendered very good results. No head or neck perforation occurred. No progression of the slip was observed. Soft tissue trauma was only minimal; mobilization was commenced the first postoperative day.
