Investigation of viral hepatitis infections possibly associated with health-care delivery--New York City, 2008-2011.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Because HBV and HCV are transmitted efficiently percutaneously, possible transmission in health-care settings is of particular concern. Public health investigations of cases of HBV and HCV infection suspected to be associated with health-care delivery play an essential role in identifying unsafe practices and controlling health-care-associated viral hepatitis transmission. However, these investigations are resource intensive, and frequently overwhelm health depar

High concentration potassium permanganate eliminates protein and particle contamination of the reusable Classic laryngeal mask airway.

In this three-stage study, we test the hypothesis that supplementary cleaning with potassium permanganate > or =4 mg.l(-1) eliminates protein and particle contamination from the reusable Classic laryngeal mask airway. The first stage involved supplementary cleaning of 70 1 x 1 cm segments from deliberately contaminated laryngeal mask airways using potassium permanganate at 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 mg.l(-1) and testing for protein staining. This showed that the lowest concentration required to eliminate protein contamination was 8 mg.l(-1). The second stage involved supplementary cleaning of 5

Application of Ultraviolet-C Radiation and Gaseous Ozone for Microbial Inactivation on Different Materials.

With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a global incentive for applying environmentally sustainable and rapid sterilization methods, such as ultraviolet-C radiation (UVC) and ozonation. Material sterilization is a requirement for a variety of industries, including food, water treatment, clothing, healthcare, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals. It becomes inevitable when devices and items like protective equipment are to be reused on/by different persons. This study presents novel findings on the performance of these sterilization methods using four microorganisms (Escheric

Total value wall: Full scale demonstration of a green wall for grey water treatment and recycling.

Greywater treatment and reuse for non-potable purposes in urban areas has become a widely researched topic to reduce the burden on fresh water resources. This study reports on the use of a green wall for treating grey water and reusing the effluent for toilet flushing, called Total Value Wall (TVW). Initially, the effectiveness of (mixtures of) different substrates, i.e. lava, lightweight expanded clay aggregates, organic soil and biochar was investigated by means of column tests. All substrates were first examined for hydraulic characteristics and later on the columns were fed with synthetic

A call to action: why medical education curriculum needs to encourage young physicians to innovate.

Patient-centered and physician-led innovations are key to promoting physicians as visionary leaders in the healthcare system especially during times of crises. COVID-19 has inspired some promising recent advancements within medicine worth noting, including improvements in telemedicine, 3-D printed personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators, drug and vaccine development, sterilization of PPE allowing for reuse, and point of care testing; they highlight a broader lesson for how we might innovate better within medicine, even after the crisis has passed. As such, with the complexities of

OVR-GS: Open-Vocabulary 3D Object Removal via Semantic Gaussian Selection and Local Diffusion-Guided Completion.

Camera-reconstructed 3D scenes often require offline visual cleanup before inspection, presentation, or reuse as renderable virtual-scene assets. Representative applications include removing temporary furniture, parked vehicles, equipment, signage, and other distracting or obsolete objects from reconstructed indoor and outdoor environments. Such editing requires not only accurate target localization across viewpoints but also plausible recovery of the previously occluded background. Existing methods often depend on manually specified masks or category-restricted detectors, while projection-bas

Rapid Point-of-Care Sterilization of Personal Protective Equipment for Frontline Healthcare Workers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, shortages of filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs), including N95 masks, highlighted the critical need for effective decontamination and reuse strategies. Current decontamination methods often rely on large, expensive equipment, hindering point-of-care application and timely reprocessing. This study presents the design and evaluation of a portable, low-cost system utilizing high-voltage pulsed electric fields (PEF) for FFR sterilization and electrostatic recharge. A novel PEF generator was developed, featuring precise control over pulse parameters and significant

WITHDRAWN: Intermittent catheterisation for long-term bladder management.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent catheterisation is a commonly recommended procedure for people with incomplete bladder emptying. There are now several designs of intermittent catheter (e.g. different lengths, 'ready to use' presentation) with different materials (e.g. PVC-free) and coatings (e.g. hydrophilic). The most frequent complication of intermittent catheterisation is urinary tract infection (UTI), but satisfaction, preference and ease of use are also important to users. It is unclear which catheter designs, techniques or strategies affect the incidence of UTI, which are preferable to users an

Bacteriuria in intermittent catheterization users: the effect of sterile versus clean reused catheters.

Monthly urine cultures were analyzed at the University of Alberta Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases to determine whether single-use sterile catheters and clean technique reduced the incidence of bacterial colonization in those using long-term intermittent self-catheterization. Thirty subjects with spina bifida, ages 3 years to 16 years, entered a crossover study with random assignment to 6 months of sterile single-use catheters or clean reused catheters. Seventeen subjects were catheterized by a parent or caregiver; 13 were responsible for self-catheterization and clea

Minimum infective dose of HIV for parenteral dosimetry.

The probability of HIV-1 transmission in a small blood exposure such as a needlestick injury or an unsafe medical injection has been estimated indirectly. Now that several comparable laboratory simulations have provided data on inoculum volumes for such exposures, the epidemiological evidence supporting these estimates can be validated and qualified using dosimetry. This review of data on infective titre, viral load and injection inoculum volume compares three approaches to HIV dosimetry. Agreement across the three approaches indicates that unsafe medical injections are several times more like

An endothelial cell compatible biosensor fabricated using optically thin indium tin oxide silicon nitride electrodes.

This study describes the fabrication and performance of an endothelial cell compatible, optically thin, indium tin oxide (ITO) microimpedance biosensor. The biosensor was constructed by sputtering a thin insulating layer of silicon nitride (Si(3)N(4)) onto a 100 nm thick ITO layer. Indium tin oxide electrodes were formed by chemically etching 250 or 500 microm diameter holes through the Si(3)N(4) insulating layer. The exposed ITO electrode was electrically connected to an ITO counter electrode, approximately 2 cm(2) in area, via a 400 microL well containing cell culture media. A lock-in amplif

Singled out?

The increasing use of single use medical devices is being driven by a growing awareness of iatrogenic (from the Greek; caused by the doctor) and nosocomial infections. Public health perceptions relating to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, specifically variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis B are high on the political agenda and a matter of concern to healthcare professionals.

Single-Use vs Reusable Catheters for Intermittent Catheterization in Patients With Urinary Retention: The COMPARE Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is the preferred management for urinary retention. Single-use catheters generate substantial environmental and financial burdens, whereas evidence on the safety of reusable catheters is limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether reusable catheters are noninferior to single-use catheters for CIC with respect to urinary tract infection (UTI) incidence. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter, noninferiority randomized clinical trial was conducted between February 21, 2020, and April 3, 2025, at 12 Dutch hospitals and included patient
