BackgroundEuthanasia remains a highly debated issue in end-of-life care because it raises ethical concerns surrounding patient autonomy, relief of suffering, professional responsibilities, and the sanctity of life. Nurses and midwives frequently face these ethical challenges in caring for patients with advanced illness, yet evidence on their perspectives within sub-Saharan African cancer care settings remains limited.AimThis study explored nurses' and midwives' ethical perspectives and perceived implications regarding the potential legalisation of euthanasia in advanced cancer care in Ghana.Re

BACKGROUND: The bioethical debates concerning living donation and surrogacy revolve around similar ethical questions and moral concepts. Nevertheless, the ethical discourses in both fields grew largely isolated from each other.
METHODS: Based on a review of ethical, sociological and anthropological research this paper aims to link the ethical discourses on living kidney donation and surrogacy by providing a comparative analysis of the two practices' relational dimension with regard to three aspects, i.e. the normative role of relational dynamics, social norms and gender roles, and reciprocity

As pediatric hematology/oncology (PHO) becomes more complex and sub-subspecialized, dedicated PHO ethicists have emerged as sub-subspecialists focused on addressing ethical issues encountered in clinical and research practices. PHO physicians and other clinicians with advanced training in bioethics contribute to the field through ethics research, education, and ethics consultation services. Furthermore, there exists a newer generation of PHO trainees interested in bioethics. This review details the experiences of current PHO ethicists, providing a blueprint for future educational, research and

The European Health Data Space (EHDS) offers significant opportunities for the secondary use of health data to support research, innovation, and public health across Europe. However, it introduces complex ethical governance challenges. While the EHDS Regulation requires data access applications to address ethical considerations, it does not establish a uniform EU-level ethics review pathway, leaving oversight largely to national law and institutional competence. This variability risks fragmentation, procedural inconsistency, and barriers to cross-border data access. This article presents recom

IntroductionPregnancy planning in patients with chronic kidney disease can result in ethical conflicts due to the potential for adverse outcomes. Traditionally, many nephrologists have advised their patients to avoid pregnancy altogether; however, this approach is paternalistic and not patient-centered. An ethical framework could guide joint decision-making between physicians and their patients, but this does not currently exist.MethodsWe performed a literature search to identify the ethical considerations associated with this patient population. We searched for articles published between 1975

Medical innovation and ethical dilemmas are intertwined in gastroenterology and hepatology. This narrative review explores direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy for hepatitis C virus (HCV) as a touchstone example of how medical innovation breeds ethical dilemmas. A few quandaries-informed consent as well as informed deferral during the first wave of DAA approvals, sobriety restrictions from payors, and high DAA costs for patients-are addressed through the lens of the foundational principles of clinical medical ethics: autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and utility. By placing the

Nitrogen hypoxia has recently emerged as a method of execution in the USA, with Alabama conducting the first executions using this technique in 2024. This article examines the historical evolution, medicalisation and ethical dilemmas surrounding execution practices, with particular attention to the rise of nitrogen hypoxia. Drawing on a targeted review of medical, legal and ethical literature, we explore the development of lethal injection protocols, the legal and procedural drivers of nitrogen gas adoption and the complex role of healthcare professionals in executions. Central concerns includ

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation is an approved and effective neurosurgical intervention for motor disorders such as PD and ET. Deep brain stimulation may also be effective in treating a number of psychiatric disorders, including treatment refractory depression and OCD. Although DBS is a widely accepted therapy in motor disorders, it remains an invasive and expensive procedure. The ethical and social challenges of DBS need further examination, and discussion and emerging applications of DBS in psychiatry may also complicate the ethical landscape of DBS.
METHODS: To identify and characterize

Uterus transplantation (UTx) represents an emerging therapeutic option for women with absolute uterine-factor infertility (AUFI) and raises complex ethical questions as a non-life-saving intervention. This study presents an ethical analysis based on the four principles of Beauchamp and Childress-autonomy, non-maleficence, beneficence, and social justice-and is grounded in a structured narrative literature review of current medical and ethical publications, drawing on the German legal context as an illustrative example. Uterus transplantation demonstrates potential benefits, particularly in ter

This article explores the ethical concept of "the equivalence thesis" (ET), or the idea that withdrawing and withholding life sustaining treatments are morally equivalent practices, within neonatology. We review the historical origins, theory, and clinical rationale behind ET, and provide an analysis of how ET relates to literature that describes neonatal mode of death and healthcare professional and parent attitudes towards end-of-life care. While ET may serve as an ethical tool to optimize resource allocation in theory, its clinical utility is limited given the complexity of end-of-life care

Oral delivery systems are being developed to treat disease, including ingestible devices that implant in the gut and deliver electrical stimulation or mRNA therapeutics. The implementation of these devices raises questions about the associated ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSIs). Our scoping review examined 83 scholarly publications published between 1946 and 2024 that investigate ELSI topics around the development and use of these technologies. We highlight the characteristics of the publications, the ethics topics mentioned, and a content analysis to describe ELSI themes. Themes

This review explores the interplay between neurobiological, psychological, and social factors that underpin moral behavior and motivation. Integrating insights from neuropsychiatry, it examines the roles of key brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and anterior cingulate cortex, as well as neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, in shaping moral reasoning and ethical decision-making. The historical evolution of moral motivation theories, from ancient philosophy to modern psychological and neurobiological perspectives, provides a foundation for understanding intrinsic an

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive and life-limiting neuromuscular disorder with profound implications for affected individuals and their families. Advances in genetic and molecular therapies, including exon skipping agents, gene therapy, and Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-based approaches have ushered in a new era of disease-modifying treatments. However, these breakthroughs also introduce complex ethical and psychosocial challenges. As we continue to extend life expectancy and improve motor outcomes for individuals with DMD, there is also a

Living kidney donation requires rigorous medical, psychosocial, and ethical evaluation to safeguard donor welfare, ensure valid informed consent, and prevent wrongful exploitation. In Singapore, the Human Organ Transplant Act mandates review by a transplant ethics committee (TEC) for all living-donor transplants. However, ethical judgment is not reducible to TEC approval or procedural compliance; transplant programs themselves carry a broader responsibility to evaluate relational dynamics that may affect voluntariness and authenticity of consent. This paper examines three cases involving conce

Turner syndrome, a chromosomal disorder characterized by premature ovarian insufficiency and infertility, presents significant reproductive challenges. Fertility preservation is critical for enabling individuals with Turner syndrome to pursue biological parenthood. However, implementation is hindered by limited provider awareness, ethical concerns, and restricted access to specialized care. This review underscores the importance of fertility preservation in Turner syndrome, evaluates current methods, and addresses barriers and ethical complexities. Methods such as ovarian tissue cryopreservati
