The feedback-related negativity indexes prediction error in active but not observational learning.

Reinforcement learning (RL) theory states that learning is driven by prediction errors (PEs)-the discrepancy between the predicted and actual outcome of an action. When participants learn from their own actions, PEs correlate with the feedback-related negativity (FRN), but it is not clear if the FRN reflects a PE in observational learning. We use a model-based regression analysis of single-trial event-related potentials to determine if the FRN in observational learning is PE driven. Twenty participants (16 female) learned the stimulus-outcome contingencies for a probabilistic three-armed bandi

[P300 potential in chldren with psychogenic nonepileptic events and tension headache].

INTRODUCTION: Psychotherapy is being used as the primary treatment in nonepileptic psychogenic seizures and tension headaches in children. Children's intelectual functioning is related to certain endogenous neurophysiological parameters. AIM: The goal of this study was to establish whether the endogenous potential P300 is different in children with nonepileptic psychogenic events and with tension headaches, and whether it changes under the influence of the cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included a group of 47 children: 20 with nonepileptic psychogenic sei

Electrophysiological indexes of illusory contours perception in humans.

The present study investigated brain mechanisms underlying the perception of illusory contours, using recordings of event-related potentials of the brain (ERPs) in right-handed individuals. Forty different stimuli were presented randomly 1600 times in foveal vision; twenty of them produced the perception of illusory contours of a Kanizsa square, the remaining were obtained rotating outwards the inducers and they did not produce any illusory percept. Half of them had white inducers on a black background and vice versa; half of them were symmetrical and the other half asymmetrical. In lateral oc

Auditory event-related potentials in fetal alcohol syndrome and Down's syndrome children.

Abnormal or borderline electroencephalograms are commonly observed in cases of gross mental retardation. However, fewer studies have focused on the use of event-related responses to aid in the differential diagnosis of developmental cognitive disorders. Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and Down syndrome represent the most common known causes of mental retardation in the Western world. Although Down syndrome is easily diagnosed with a chromosome assay, FAS can be more difficult to diagnose since the diagnostic features are more subjectively based. The present study is the first to characterize audi

Motivationally salient cue processing measured using the monetary incentive delay (MID) task with electroencephalography (EEG): A potential marker of apathy in Huntington's disease.

We explored the utility of the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task with concurrent encephalography (EEG) as a marker of apathy in people with Huntington's disease (HD) as well as neurotypical controls. Specifically, we assessed between and within-group differences in the amplitude of the P300 and Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) event-related potentials as a function of motivational salience. In contrast to neurotypical controls, HD participants' ERP amplitudes were not differentially modulated by motivationally salient cues (i.e., signalling potential 'gain' or 'loss') compared to 'neutral

Utilizing a language model to improve online dynamic data collection in P300 spellers.

P300 spellers provide a means of communication for individuals with severe physical limitations, especially those with locked-in syndrome, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, P300 speller use is still limited by relatively low communication rates due to the multiple data measurements that are required to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of event-related potentials for increased accuracy. Therefore, the amount of data collection has competing effects on accuracy and spelling speed. Adaptively varying the amount of data collection prior to character selection has been shown to impro

Brain responses to number sequences with and without active task requirement.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of the active task involvement versus the passive knowledge of the structure of the stimulation on event-related potentials (ERPs) to violation in number sequences. This should contribute to future development of an ERP test for neurological patients. METHODS: ERPs were recorded in subjects who listened to 4-item sequences of numbers incrementing by one. Half of the sequences had an appropriate end item, whereas the other half ended inappropriately. The role of active versus passive condition was investigated in a between-subject design. RESULTS: Incorrectly

Association of Circulating Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor with Cognition among Adult Obese Population.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has a strong association with the risk of developing cognitive impairment and dementia at a later age. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor appear to be important components in cognitive function and are also involved in energy homeostasis. The level of circulating BDNF and its association with cognition has yet to be delineated clearly. In this work we studied the association of circulating BDNF with cognition among the adult obese population. METHODS: The study involved 132 healthy participants between 18 and 40 years of age and of both sexes. The pa

An exploratory study on preseason event related potentials in female adolescent rugby athletes: do symptoms and concussion history matter?

Female rugby is a collision sport involving contact events such as tackling, rucking, and scrumming, elevating the risk of sport-related concussion (SRC) and repetitive head acceleration events (rHAEs) in female adolescent athletes. Event-related potentials (ERPs) are neurophysiological markers, which can reflect SRC and rHAEs, however, preseason benchmark ERP characteristics in female adolescent rugby players remain poorly understood, particularly regarding age, concussion history, and Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) outcomes. The primary aim was to examine associations between SCAT s

Assessing Gluten-Induced Brain Fog in a Non-celiac Patient: A Case Report.

While gluten-induced brain fog is frequently reported in individuals with celiac disease, it is uncertain whether people without classic gastrointestinal symptoms of celiac may also experience similar gluten-related cognitive issues. These types of subjective complaints are difficult to quantify in clinical practice, but electroencephalography (EEG) with event-related potentials (ERPs) can be useful in identifying cognitive disturbances. The case we present here is of a 28-year-old male who reported mild cognitive symptoms associated with gluten exposure, not previously objectively evaluated.

The P300 wave is decomposed into components reflecting response selection and automatic reactivation of stimulus-response links.

The parietal P300 wave of event-related potentials (ERPs) has been associated with various psychological operations in numerous laboratory tasks. This study aims to decompose the P3 wave of ERPs into subcomponents and link them with behavioral parameters, such as the strength of stimulus-response (S-R) links and GO/NOGO responses. EEGs (31 channels), referenced to linked ears, were recorded from 172 healthy adults (107 women) who participated in two cued GO/NOGO tasks, where the strength of S-R links was manipulated through instructions. P300 waves were observed in active conditions in respons

Relationships between auditory event-related potentials and mood state, medication, and comorbid psychiatric illness in patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) exhibit aberrations in auditory event-related potentials (ERPs), although the relationships between these measures and mood state at testing, comorbid psychiatric illness, presence of psychotic features, and medication usage are unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between these factors and auditory ERP measures in BD patients. METHODS: An auditory 'oddball' discrimination task was used to elicit ERPs from 69 patients with type I BD and 52 healthy controls. Patients were placed into subgroups based upon their m

Iron states and cognitive abilities in young adults: neuropsychological and neurophysiological assessment.

Many investigators found that iron deficiency anemia (IDA) had a great influence on cognitive functions in infants and children. However, studies of such topic in adults are few and controversial. We prospectively assessed the possible influence of IDA and iron supplementation (for 3 months) on cognitive function and intelligence of 28 young adults with IDA. We used group of hematological, cognitive, neurophysiological tests for assessment including: mini-mental state examination (MMSE), Wechsler memory scale-revised (WMS-R), Wechsler adult intelligence scale-revised (WAIS-R), event-related po

Clinical applications of EEG as an excellent tool for event related potentials in psychiatric and neurotic disorders.

Electroencephalography is an excellent tool for assessing neurobiological and neurotransmission dysfunction. Event-related potentials (ERPs) are a simple, non-invasive method of studying neurophysiology. ERPs reflect complex activity of neural networks to blame for discriminative behavior of people and recognition of novel stimuli. They are defined as brain voltage fluctuations linked in time with some physical or mental event. EEG is used to assess ERPs, and its use has grown in popularity since the 1960s. This article provides an overview of the ERP methods as well as the properties of the v

Temporal dynamics of event-related potentials related to goal conduciveness and power appraisals.

The Component Process Model hypothesizes that appraisal--the mechanism that elicits and differentiates emotion--is processed sequentially. It predicts that the goal conduciveness check (motivational valence evaluation) is evaluated before the power check (evaluation of the degree of power to act on events). To test this prediction, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) during a gambling task in response to feedback that simultaneously presented the goal conduciveness (outcome: win, loss, or break-even) and the power check (options to act on the outcome) information. In line with the sequ

How distinct autism and schizotypal trait dimensions influence neural predictive processing: An Event-related potential study.

The Predictive Processing framework offers insights into the neural mechanisms underlying autism and schizophrenia spectra. This study employed visual and auditory oddball tasks with varying difficulty levels to test whether brain-responses to unexpected events are different within these spectra. A total of 122 participants underwent EEG recordings and completed self-reports of autistic and schizotypal traits. Results showed that increased task difficulty significantly reduced P300 amplitudes across both sensory modalities. Higher Restricted Interests and Detail Orientation autistic traits wer

Components in the P300: Don't forget the Novelty P3!

This study investigated stimulus-response patterns of temporal principal components analysis (PCA)-derived event-related potential (ERP) components in a classical auditory habituation paradigm with long interstimulus intervals. The skin conductance response (SCR) was included as the "gold standard" model of the Orienting Reflex. Thirty participants were presented with a single series of 10 identical 60 dB tones, followed by a change trial at a different frequency. Single-trial, electrooculography-corrected ERPs were submitted to temporal PCA. The main focus was on the components expected in th

EEG correlates of cognitive time scales in the Necker-Zeno model for bistable perception.

The Necker-Zeno model of bistable perception provides a formal relation between the average duration of meta-stable percepts (dwell times T) of ambiguous figures and two other basic time scales (t0, ΔT) underlying cognitive processing. The model predicts that dwell times T covary with t0, ΔT or both. We tested this prediction by exploiting that observers, in particular experienced meditators, can volitionally control dwell times T. Meditators and non-meditators observed bistable Necker cubes either passively or tried to hold their current percept. The latencies of a centro-parietal event-relat
