The present research aimed to characterize the potential efficiency of deferasirox in removing thallium after its administration for 30 days following two dose levels of 20 and 160 μm of thallium (III) chloride to male Wistar rats every day. After thallium administration some abnormal clinical signs such as red staining around the eyes, greenish mottling on the liver, weakness, loss of hair and weight, were observed in animals. Deferasirox was given orally to different groups of rats for a period of one week immediately after thallium administration. After chelation therapy, animals were kille

The American alligator inhabits bodies of fresh water in Florida and other southeastern states. Although attacks on pets are frequent, alligator attacks on humans are relatively rare because of the animal's natural fear of man. Because of the rarity of attacks on humans, the pathologic findings and pathophysiology of death in such cases have not been well characterized in the literature. We report three cases of fatal alligator attacks that occurred in southwest Florida, each with different pathologic findings and mechanisms of death. Although the cause of death in each case was attributed to

A 2.5-year-old boy with known myotubular myopathy (Spiro-Shy-Gonatas syndrome) and gonadorelin intake 9 months ante-mortem was found dead in his bed at home. At autopsy a ruptured subcapsular haematoma of the liver with resulting haemoperitoneum (600 ml) was found. Both lobes of the liver showed numerous circular blood foci <1 mm-2 cm in diameter. Signs of mechanical trauma such as bruising of the abdominal wall were absent. Histologically, the blood cysts were commonly connected to the sinusoids but did not have an endothelial lining and the reticular fibres showed ruptures. These pathomorpho

Post-traumatic intrahepatic aneurysms are frequent sources of intrahepatic and intrabiliary bleeding. The authors describe selective management of ten recent post-traumatic intrahepatic aneurysms, five extrahepatic aneurysms, and one ruptured hepatic artery in a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Twelve patients had gastrointestinal bleeding or jaundice. Intraperitoneal rupture occurred twice. One aneurysm grew to 9 cm in diameter during nine years. Angiography should precede surgery whenever possible, and transcatheter occlusion should in general receive first priority. Aneurysms of the com

We present two apparent hit-and-run cases where two women were run over. The vehicles involved were subsequently traced and their owners charged with manslaughter. Autopsy evidence, scientific investigation of the scene and circumstances of the deaths, technical inspection of the vehicles, and DNA analysis strongly suggested that both victims were lying on the road before the accident. Case 1 was a suicide. In Case 2, the victim had fallen to the ground following acute alcohol intoxication. Victimological analysis was pivotal in reconstructing the dynamics of the events. We suggest that a hit-

Varices are the main clinical manifestation of portal hypertension, and their bleeding is the predominant cause of mortality from this condition. Periumbilical varices are known as "caput medusae." Reports of their bleeding are rare, with only three fatal cases described in the literature. The antemortem diagnosis is relatively simple, while the postmortem diagnosis is more complex. This paper is the first report of fatal hemorrhage from a caput medusae for which the diagnosis was made postmortem, thanks to a complete diagnostic process including scene and circumstances, medical history, and a

BACKGROUND: Prehospital treatment for noncompressible abdominal bleeding, particularly due to large vascular injury, represents a significant unmet medical need on the battlefield and in civilian trauma. To date, few large animal models are available to assess new therapeutic interventions and hemostatic agents for prehospital hemorrhage control.
METHODS: We developed a novel, lethal, closed-abdomen injury model in noncoagulopathic swine by strategic placement of a cutting wire around the external iliac artery. The wire was externalized, such that percutaneous distraction would result in vess

In this paper, we report a fatal neck injury of suicidal origin of a 29-year-old man. A 9-mm blank pistol and several blank cartridges in a plastic bag were discovered near the victim. There was an irregular and contuse oval contact-entrance wound of 25 mm × 20 mm with a muzzle imprint on its upper medial part on the right side of the neck. The cause of death was exsanguination due to injuries to the right external carotid artery and the right jugular vein. This case confirms that blank pistols, contrary to public opinion, are dangerous and may inflict potentially fatal injuries when fired at

About 50% of the trauma victims die at the scene mostly because of exsanguinating haemorrhage. Most trials of resuscitation fail in face of the ongoing bleeding. Ongoing research/studies to save these victims by inducing rapid hypothermia using cardiopulmonary bypass as an emergency initial measure along with delayed resuscitation show improved outcomes. A comprehensive review of this research and analysis of studies showed that rapid induction of hypothermia within 5 min of cardiac arrest is associated with better survival and improved neurological outcome. This led us to conclude that suspen

BACKGROUND: Varicose veins are a common entity presenting a worldwide distribution. Although they are usually benign, sometimes are proved to be a threatening condition. Massive hemorrhage is an unusual complication of this common venous pathology that demands immediate medical intervention.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 66-year-old woman found dead in her house surrounded by a large quantity of blood. Autopsy revealed a 7 mm ulcer on the internal surface of the left lower leg communicating with a varicose vein, signs of exsanguinations and liver cirrhosis. Toxicological analysis

During a Christmas party, two male guests started fighting. The perpetrator was allegedly pushed onto a glass table by the victim or fell into the table together with that man so that the glass top broke and caused a cut wound on the perpetrator's back. According to his statement he then threw a fragment of the broken glass table in the direction of the other man hitting him accidentally in a way so that the subclavian artery was severed and he died from exsanguination. Tests on the breaking characteristics of the glass table, the flying behaviour and the kinetics of thrown glass fragments con

The purpose of this study was to describe the outcome of patients undergoing surgery with recognized and unrecognized factor VIII inhibitor. The setting was a tertiary care center with a community-based general surgery training program. Two patients with acquired factor VIII inhibitor coagulopathy required cholecystectomy. Interventions included intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and factor VIII transfusions. An elderly patient undergoing urgent open cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis exsanguinated despite postoperative recognition and treatment of factor VIII inhibitor. A second patient w

Patients with thoracic vascular injuries fall into two groups: those who are exsanguinating and require an empiric operation with a high mortality and those with contained injuries that permit preoperative evaluation. The unstable group requires judgment to determine the appropriate empiric position, exposure, and operation. Unlike abdominal trauma, which is addressed by way of a midline incision, there are multiple thoracic incisions that can be used to access thoracic vascular injuries. Thus, the stable group may benefit from preoperative imaging, which then can suggest a patient position, i

The critically injured trauma patient in severe hemorrhagic shock presents a complex and arduous challenge to even the most experienced trauma staff. Lives are at stake as trauma teams feverishly pour massive amounts of blood into severely injured patients attempting to replace entire blood volumes several times over. Prompt identification of patients at risk for hemorrhage and establishment of massive transfusion protocols can provide guidance in managing the transfusion needs of the exsanguinating patient. These state-of-the-art protocols address component therapy, endpoints to transfusion a

We have evaluated the endemicity of the onchocerciasis in two villages of the district of Amou in Togo, Okpahoué et Onglo. We have studied 294 subjects including 136 males and 158 females representing the quarter of the population of the two villages (clinical investigation and exsanguine cutaneous biopsy): 111 persons are parasited by Onchocerca volvulus that means a prevalence rate of 37.7%. We can therefore say that the villages are in a state of "meso-endemicity". We have been able to find nodules by 20 persons among the 111 that give a percentage of 6.8 of the examined persons. Among chil

The current report describes the use of a molecular technique to identify immature Fascioloides magna An 18-month-old Brangus heifer was found dead in the field without any prior clinical signs. The cause of death was exsanguination into the thoracic cavity associated with pulmonary embolization and infection by immature Fascioloides magna resulting in 2 large foci of pulmonary necrosis and focal arteriolar and lung rupture. The liver had a few random migratory tracts with typical iron and porphyrin fluke exhaust, but no identified fluke larvae. A single immature fluke was found in the lungs,

Animals may be responsible for an array of potentially lethal injuries. Blunt force injuries characteristically involve larger animals such as cattle or horses that may kick, crush, or trample a victim causing head and facial injuries. Farm workers in particular are at high risk of lethal injuries involving the head and torso. Significant blunt trauma may be found in vehicle occupants after collisions with large animals such as camels or moose. Rarely, zookeepers may be crushed by particularly massive animals such as elephants. Sharp force injuries usually involve carnivore bites, most often f

Effective management of vaginal bleeding in late pregnancy requires recognition of potentially serious conditions, including placenta previa, placental abruption, and vasa previa. Placenta previa is commonly diagnosed on routine ultrasonography before 20 weeks' gestation, but in nearly 90 percent of patients it ultimately resolves. Women who have asymptomatic previa can continue normal activities, with repeat ultrasonographic evaluation at 28 weeks. Persistent previa in the third trimester mandates pelvic rest and hospitalization if significant bleeding occurs. Placental abruption is the most

Numerous investigations have demonstrated that the ability of passenger airbag systems to reduce both injury severity and mortality in car accidents is restricted to the simultaneous application of seatbelts and airbags. Depending on the impact force during the accident and also on the driver's position to the airbag an isolated airbag deployment can even produce severe injuries. We describe a complete infradiaphragmatic dissection of the IVC and a tear of liver veins after an airbag deployment without seatbelt use. We discuss different airbag associated injuries, the possible pathomechanism o
