Prevalence of factor V Leiden and prothrombin G20210A mutations in unselected patients with venous thromboembolism.

We determined the prevalence of factor V Leiden and of prothrombin G20210A mutations in a cohort of unselected outpatients (n = 748) referred for suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE) and a pooled analysis of similar studies was also performed. Based on the clinical presentation, the prevalence of factor V Leiden was 15.7% in the 83 patients with DVT and 14.1% in the 99 patients with PE compared with 5.3% in patients without DVT and/or PE (control group). The prevalence of the prothrombin G20210A mutation did not differ among the three groups (3.9% for controls, 4…

Are factor V Leiden carriers who use oral contraceptives at extreme risk for venous thromboembolism?

BACKGROUND: Major concern was raised by an earlier study regarding oral contraceptive use in women with the factor V Leiden mutation. A more than 30-fold increase in relative risk for venous thromboembolism was reported; for homozygotes, the relative risk was as much as 100-fold or more. OBJECTIVE: To replicate the reported risk estimates with a new population-based case-control study. METHODS: Eighty women with a diagnosis of venous thromboembolism were consecutively identified and compared with population-based controls (n = 406). Factor V Leiden mutation was identified by genotype analysi…

[Multiple phlebothrombosis following cesarean section due to heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation detected post partum].

Activated protein C resistance in factor V Leiden mutation is currently the most frequent hereditary defect accompanied by high risk of thromboembolism. Thromboembolism often develops in the presence of additional risk factors such as pregnancy, birth, taking oral contraceptives, immobilization and surgical operations. A case of multiple phlebothrombosis following caesarean section in heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation evidenced post partum is reported. The patient developed extensive phlebothrombosis in both legs on postoperative day three despite preventive thrombosis treatment with low-m…

Factor V Leiden mutation in a case with ischemic stroke: which relationship? A case report.

A 50-year-old man presented spontaneous internal carotid artery dissection with ischemic stroke. He had a history of deep venous thrombosis, and an activated protein C resistance due to factor V Leiden mutation was documented. He showed no other vascular risk factor. This unusual case puts the question whether this coagulation defect may be related to the stroke occurrence.

Coagulation studies, factor V Leiden, and anticardiolipin antibodies in 40 cases of cerebral venous thrombosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is an infrequent condition with a large variety of causes. However, in 20% to 35% of cases, no cause is found. We studied coagulation parameters, including activated protein C resistance associated with factor V gene mutation (factor V Leiden) and anticardiolipin antibodies, in a large series of patients with CVT with or without identified cause or risk factor. METHODS: Forty patients (30 women and 10 men) aged 19 to 71 years (mean age, 36.2 years) with CVT diagnosed by angiography and/or MRI were studied 1 to 18 years after thrombosis.…

High Titer of Acquired Factor V Inhibitor Presenting with a Pseudo-deficiency of Multiple Coagulation Factors.

Acquired coagulation factor inhibitor is a rare coagulation disorder. We herein report a patient with acquired factor V inhibitor showing a decrease in multiple coagulation factor activities. A high titer of factor V inhibitor presumably led to a marked inhibition of factor V activity in the specific factor-deficient plasma used in coagulation factor activity assays based on either an activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) or prothrombin time (PT) clotting assay, resulting in false low values of the coagulation activity. We re-examined the coagulation factor activity using several diluti…

Factor V Leiden mutation, deficiency of antithrombin III and elevation of factor VIII in a child with ischemic stroke: a case report.

A 4-year-old boy was admitted with left hemiplegia. Thrombophilia marker examination resulted with factor V Leiden mutation heterozygosity, a deficiency of antithrombin III and a high level of factor VIII. Cranial computed tomography scan revealed an ischemic infarct in the region of right anterior cerebral artery. In the literature, combinations of multiple thrombophilia risk factors that trigger cerebral ischemic stroke in children have been emphasized. To our knowledge, this is the first child with these combinations of thrombophilia risk factors and ischemic stroke to be reported in the li…

V factor (tumor volume) and T factor (FIGO classification) in the assessment of cervix cancer prognosis: the risk of lymph node spread.

An attempt was made by investigation of the operative specimens from 98 patients suffering from epidermoid carcinoma of the cervix to assess the relationship between lymphatic spread on one hand and tumor volume and anatomical stage on the other hand. Within the same anatomical stage the risk of lymphatic spread is more important as the tumor volume increases. The reverse is also true. Within the same volume the risk of lymphatic spread increases when cancer extends beyond the "cervix-parametrium" barrier. The anatomical classification based on the T factor deserves to be retained, classificat

Reproductive Factors Related to Childbearing and a Novel Automated Mammographic Measure, V.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the associations between several reproductive factors related to childbearing and the variation (V) measure (a novel, objective, single summary measure of breast image intensity) by menopausal status. METHODS: Our study included 3,814 cancer-free women within the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) and NHSII cohorts. The data on reproductive variables and covariates were obtained from biennial questionnaires closest to the mammogram date. V-measures were obtained from mammographic images using a previously developed algorithm capturing the standard deviation of pixel values

Circulating Permeability Factors in Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis: In V itro Detection.

INTRODUCTION: The recurrence of proteinuria after kidney transplantation in patients with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is considered proof of the presence of circulating permeability factors (CPFs). The aim of this study is to demonstrate the presence of plasma CPFs using series of in vitro assays. METHODS: Podocytes and endothelial cells (glomerular microvascular endothelial cells [GMVECs]) were incubated with plasma from FSGS patients with presumed CPFs in relapse and remission and from steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS), steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS), me

The clinical course of chronic periodontitis: V. Predictive factors in periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND: The factors associated with initial periodontitis are not well understood and cannot be identified by cross-sectional studies. AIM: To identify the factors associated with the initiation of chronic periodontitis using ante-dependence modelling. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 26-year longitudinal study of the natural history of periodontitis served as the basis for the study. In 1969, 565 Norwegian men aged 16-34 years were surveyed. Subsequent surveys were performed in 1971, 1973, 1975, 1981, 1988 and finally in 1995, with 223 remaining subjects. Plaque (PlI), gingival (GI) and calculus

Psychological factors affecting medical condition: a new proposal for DSM-V.

The DSM category of "psychological factors affecting medical condition" had virtually no impact on clinical practice. However, several clinically relevant psychosomatic syndromes have been described in the literature: disease phobia, persistent somatization, conversion symptoms, illness denial, demoralization, and irritable mood. These syndromes, in addition to the DSM definition of hypochondriasis, can yield clinical specification in the category of "psychological factors affecting medical condition" and eliminate the need for the highly criticized DSM classification of somatoform disorders.

Zinc enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal function through transcription factor EB activation and V-ATPase assembly.

The stimulation of autophagy or lysosomes has been considered therapeutic for neurodegenerative disorders because the accumulation of misfolded proteins is commonly observed in the brains of individuals with these diseases. Although zinc is known to play critical roles in the functions of lysosomes and autophagy, the mechanism behind this regulatory relationship remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, we examined which mechanism is involved in zinc-mediated activation of autophagy and lysosome. Exposure to zinc at a sub-lethal concentration activated autophagy in a concentration-dependent m
