Determinants of Hypertension amongst Rice Farmers in West Java, Indonesia.

The hypertension rate in Indonesia has increased significantly in the past five years, but there is limited information about the hypertension risk of farmers. Our study assesses the prevalence of hypertension in this population and examines the proportional risk of various work environment and lifestyle factors among farmers. A cross-sectional study was conducted in high and low heat stress agriculture areas of West Java, Indonesia. There were 354 male farmers aged 25 to 73 years old who participated in the study. We measured blood pressure and used a questionnaire on self-reported use of ant

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Finnish Dairy Farmers on Cryptosporidiosis.

Calf-mediated zoonotic cryptosporidiosis is an emerging occupational health risk among Finnish dairy farmers. We studied farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding cryptosporidiosis to reveal possible weaknesses, which might increase the risk of zoonotic infection. KAP study was carried out as a cross-sectional questionnaire survey (n = 243). A total of 400 cryptosporidiosis-negative and 138 cryptosporidiosis-positive dairy farms, with more than 50 cows, were invited to participate in the study. The response rate was 45%. Half (49%) of the respondents had adequate knowledge c

Knee musculoskeletal impairments and associated pain factors among rice farmers.

BACKGROUND: Rice farming is done using manual methods and involves strenuous labour, which can lead to musculoskeletal disorders. OBJECTIVE: To identify the factors associated with knee musculoskeletal impairments and related pain among rice farmers complaining of knee pain. METHODS: The study employed a community-based, cross-sectional design. Full-time rice farmers (n= 201) were surveyed. A questionnaire was used to record demographics and details of farm work; followed by a physical examination of knee structures impairments. RESULTS: The prevalence of knee impairment was highest among f

Cervical spondylosis in South West Nigerian farmers and female traders.

BACKGROUND: Neck pain is a common pain syndrome in the clinical practice. It may or may not be associated with the radiculopathy or myelopathy. Load carrying on the head is believed to be associated with an increased incidence of cervical spondylosis. Radiographic spondylosis is noticeable in 25-50% of people of 50 years of age and in 75-90% by the age of 65 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Plain cervical radiograph were obtained in all farmers and female traders above 45 years of age who complained of neck pain. Those who met the radiological diagnostic criteria were enlisted in the study. The

Protection against breathing dust: behavior over time in Californian farmers.

The aim of this study was to determine whether Californian farmers changed respiratory protective behaviors over time and the personal characteristics associated with protective behaviors. We surveyed 588 farmers longitudinally from 1993 to 2004. Questions included frequency of protective mask or respirator use in dusty conditions and the percentage of time the farmers drove a tractor with a closed cab. To assess longitudinal associations between protective behaviors and potential covariates, general estimating equation modeling was used with adjustment for subject age, study date, and other c

Norwegian farmers' vigilance in reporting sheep showing scrapie-associated signs.

BACKGROUND: Scrapie is a chronic neurodegenerative disease affecting small ruminants and belongs to the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Scrapie is considered a serious animal disease and it has been notifiable in Norway since 1965. The clinical signs of scrapie might be vague and the farmers, if familiar with the signs of scrapie, are often in the best position for detecting scrapie suspects. In 2002, an anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted in order to assess Norwegian sheep farmers' vigilance of scrapie. RESULTS: Although the potential detection of a scrapie-positive anima

Oilseed rape flour: another allergen causing occupational asthma among farmers.

BACKGROUND: Farmers are exposed to a wide variety of sensitizers. Since occupational asthma (OA) can lead to permanent disability, exposure discontinuation is the preferred treatment. When this is not possible, the identification of the causative allergen may allow an alternative therapy. METHODS: We present three farmers diagnosed with OA as a consequence of handling fodder. We carried out skin tests with common and occupational allergens and with oilseed rape (OSR) extract. Total and specific serum IgE levels were measured. The patients underwent the OSR-bronchial provocation test (OSR-BPT)

Respiratory symptoms of obstructive lung disease in European crop farmers.

Crop farming as a risk factor for respiratory symptoms of obstructive lung disease was assessed. Random samples of crop farmers from four European countries were studied following a cross-sectional design. A questionnaire on respiratory symptoms and occupation was administered to determine prevalences, and the roles of the various crops as risk factors for respiratory symptoms were assessed through logistic regression modeling. The 4,793 crop farmers included in the study (response rate: 85.3%) reported the following respiratory symptoms: wheezing (14.9%), asthma (3.3%), nasal allergy (14.4%),

Fish-eaters and farmers: dental pathology in the Arabian Gulf.

Twelve skeletal samples, previously published, from the Arabian Gulf have been used to trace differences in diet and subsistence patterns through an analysis of dental pathology. The skeletons date from 3,000 BC to AD 1,500 and cover a variety of geographical locations: off-shore islands, Eastern Arabia, and Oman. The dental conditions analyzed are attrition, caries, calculus, abscessing, and antemortem tooth loss (AMTL). Results indicate four basic patterns of dental disease which, while not mutually exclusive, correspond to four basic subsistence patterns. Marine dependency, represented by t

Cross-sectional epidemiological study of respiratory disease in turkey farmers.

This study was a cross-sectional epidemiological investigation of respiratory disease in farmers involved in the turkey growing industry. Pulmonary function tests and health history questionnaires were administered to a total of 95 turkey farmers throughout Minnesota. Respiratory symptoms were greatest during the winter months when exposure to environmental agents was highest. Prevalence of symptoms was higher for smokers, personnel who worked in hen barns, and for persons who had worked in the turkey growing industry for more than 10 years. Pulmonary function was found to decrease during the

Communal farmers and tick control--a field study in Zimbabwe.

Intensive dipping of cattle to control ticks and tick-borne diseases precludes development of endemic stability to the latter. Alternative control strategies have been recommended which reduce the frequency of dipping and permit the expression of tick resistance and endemic stability. However, such strategies imply acceptance by cattle owners of higher tick burdens. In this study the views of a group of communal farmers to tick control are described and the impact of these views upon adoption of other strategies is discussed.

Farmers' loss due to Guinea worm disease: a pilot study.

Guinea worm disease has been blamed for much disability and loss of productivity among farmers in Africa and South Asia. Many studies have tried to equate days lost in illness to monetary values. These attempts often overlook the process of disability in relation to farming patterns. This pilot effort uses a qualitative case study approach to learn about how Guinea worm can cause loss to farmers. Twenty in-depth interviews with affected farmers showed that their losses are related to the time of year they are affected by Guinea worm. Some crops with flexible planting times, e.g. cassava, may n

Farm-related dermatoses in Iowa male farmers and wives of farmers: a cross-sectional analysis of the Iowa Farm Family Health and Hazard Surveillance Project.

Agricultural workers are exposed to a variety of hazards that increase their risk for dermatitis. Nevertheless, the prevalence, patterns, and risk factors for dermatitis have not been well characterized among farmers in the United States. We assessed the prevalence and risk factors for dermatitis among 382 male farmers and 256 wives of farmers in Iowa using a cross-sectional study design. From 1992 to 1994, we collected data on potential risk factors and dermatitis. The results showed that 9.6% of male farmers and 14.4% of wives of farmers reported dermatitis during the previous 12-month perio
