OBJECTIVE: To report survival of retroperitoneal necrotizing fasciitis in an inmunocompromised patient and to demonstrate early clinical signs that may help in the prompt diagnosis and treatment of this severe infection.
DESIGN: Case report and literature review.
SETTING: An adult, 18-bed intensive care unit within a university hospital.
PATIENT: A 38-yr-old man who had undergone an uncomplicated closed hemorrhoidectomy was readmitted to the hospital on postoperative day 5 for erythema around the hemorrhoidectomy and a dirty brown discharge from the wound.
INTERVENTIONS: Early diagnosis of

Varicella is a nearly ubiquitous acquired childhood disease. Infectious complications of varicella can be life- or limb-threatening. These complications appear 3 to 4 days after the appearance of varicella exanthem and are heralded by fever, pain, and erythema of the overlying skin. Airway complications of varicella are rare, rapidly evolving, and, unfortunately, difficult to visualize. We report a child who presented with a unique combination of varicella-induced airway complications-acute epiglottitis and subsequent necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck. varicella, epiglottitis, necroti

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft tissue infection characterized by cutaneous necrosis, suppurative fasciitis, vascular thrombosis and extreme systemic toxicity. Involvement of head and neck structures is rare, but occur most frequently in patients with diabetes and chronic alcoholism. Once initiated, the disease progresses rapidly and diffusely, involving adjacent fascial spaces. Necrotizing fasciitis may also extend to the cervical viscera, mediastinum and anterior chest wall. A 65-year-old chronic alcoholic man, with long-standing diabetes and liver cirrhosis under irregular treatment

Necrotizing fasciitis continues to carry a very high mortality and prolonged morbidity. Gallstones have previously not been reported as a cause of this condition. We report a patient who presented with gallbladder perforation leading to necrotizing fasciitis of the anterior abdominal wall. The only organism isolated was Escherichia Coli, cultured from necrotic issue.

The authors analyze under the aspect of data offered by medical literature, the clinical aspects and occurrence of the microbial flora in the necrotizing fasciitis. The clinical symptoms are presented in correlation with the aerobic, anaerobic and mixed bacterial specificity with the purpose of a suitable antibacterial therapy. Further, there are presented certain aspects of cutaneous "bubbly" lesions connected with the microbial flora in the NF.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressing necrotizing process which affects subcutaneous tissue and fascia. The leading cause of these infections in neck is odontogenic infection. Its occurrence is reported to be rare, but often fatal. The therapeutic regimen includes three essential principles: appropriate antimicrobial therapy, prompt surgical treatment, and supportive measures. Two cases of cervical necrotizing fasciitis revealing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are reported. Clinicians should be aware of this underlying condition, and every patient with cervical necrotizi

Cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis is a rare infection but still occurs and carries a mortality rate up to 60%. It is a polymicrobial infection that is characterized by diffuse necrosis of fascial planes and subcutaneous tissues. Diagnosing early stages of cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis in relationship to other soft tissue infections of odontogenic origin is difficult and leads to less aggressive treatment with resulting increased morbidity and mortality. To prevent this significant mortality and morbidity associated with cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis early presentation, recognitio

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but often fatal soft-tissue infection primarily involving the superficial fascia and fat tissue resulting in extensive undermining of surrounding tissues. Skin is initially spared, but as necrotizing fasciitis spreads, all the soft-tissue components, including the skin, become involved. The progression of necrotizing fasciitis is often fulminant, and the prognosis depends to a large extent on the rapidity of correct diagnosis and surgical treatment (debridement). Most of the patients affected with necrotizing fasciitis have some risk factors: chronic general or

NF is a potentially lethal infectious process usually found in the abdomen, perineum, or extremities. In the head and neck it usually starts from a dental infection but can be initiated from any source. One of the more serious sequelae is extension of the infection down the deep fascial planes of the neck leading to mediastinitis; this is associated with a higher mortality rate. The presence of an associated immunocompromising disease, such as diabetes, has been said to predispose an individual to NF, and the mortality rate has been shown to be higher (although perhaps not significantly so). W

Necrotizing fasciitis is an acute soft-tissue infection rarely seen in the head and neck area. The case of a 29-year-old female with necrotizing cervical fasciitis of unknown origin is presented. These infections usually result from dental infections; this patient, however, denied any associated dental problems. The patient presented with an erythematous swelling over the anterior neck associated with a choking sensation and an elevated WBC suggestive of acute thyroiditis. After three days of hospitalization the skin over the anterior neck area became necrotic. Surgical debridement of the area

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly spreading infection of the subcutaneous tissue and fascia; diabetes mellitus appears to be the most frequent underlying disease. Early diagnosis and immediate aggressive surgical therapy are paramount to curtail morbidity and mortality, but diagnosis is often difficult and unnecessarily delayed. We describe a case of necrotizing fasciitis precipitating diabetic ketoacidotic coma where correct diagnosis was not made until the 14th hospital day. We stress the fact that physicians caring for critically ill patients should be keenly aware of the possibility of ne

Two cases of necrotizing fasciitis in intravenous cocaine abusers are presented to alert the medical community to the possibility of these severe infections in such addicts. Antimicrobial therapy should include agents effective against Bacteroides species, streptococci, and Gram-negative aerobes; therapy directed only against staphylococci and Gram-negative aerobes is not sufficient.
