Heat vs. Fatigue: Hyperthermia as a Possible Treatment Option for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).

The aetiology and pathophysiology of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) have not yet been clarified. Its exact diagnosis is also difficult because it has no biomarkers. This lack of knowledge leads to difficulties in treating the disease. In our work, we are attempting to counteract this problem by analysing the central cellular mechanisms in ME/CFS patients and comparing them with those of healthy individuals. This pilot study provides a small glimpse into the journey of nine people with ME/CFS-more specifically, how their peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) re…

Consequences of sarcolemma fatigue on maximal muscle strength production in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Myalgic encephalomyelitis is an invalidating chronic disease often associated with exercise-induced alterations of muscle membrane excitability (M wave). No simultaneous measurements of maximal isometric force production and sarcolemma fatigue in the same muscle group have been previously reported. We hypothesized that M wave alterations could be partly responsible for the reduced muscle force present in this invalidating disease. METHODS: This retrospective study compared two groups of patients who presented (n = 30) or not (n = 28) alterations of M waves evoked by direct muscle …

A New General Fatigue Limit Diagram and Its Application of Predicting Die Fatigue Life during Cold Forging.

Traditional fatigue fracture theory and practice focus principally on structural design. It is thus too conservative and inappropriate when used to predict the high-cycle fatigue life of dies used for metal forming, especially cold forging. We propose a novel mean stress correction model and diagram to predict the high-cycle fatigue lives of cold forging dies, which focuses on the upper part of the equivalent fatigue strength curve. Considering the features of die materials characterized by high yield strength and low ductility, a straight line is assumed for the tensile yield line. To the con…

Force-time course parameters and force fatigue model during an intermittent fatigue protocol in motorcycle race riders.

Fatigue in forearm muscles may be critical for motorcycle riders in relation to performance and forearm disorders. Force-time course parameters were examined to better characterize the reduction in the maximal force generating capacity (MVC) during an intermittent fatigue protocol (IFP) specifically designed for motorcycle riders. Also, a mathematical force fatigue model is proposed. Forty motorcyclists (aged 27.6 ± 6.8 years) performed an IFP that simulated the braking gesture and posture of a rider. Fatigue was confirmed by a 40% decrement of the normalized MVC in comparison with basal value…

Fatigue in young patients with acquired brain injury in the rehabilitation setting: Categorizing and interpreting fatigue severity levels.

PURPOSE: Fatigue in patients with acquired brain injury (ABI) is common. However, to better target fatigue, clear ways to categorize/interpret fatigue-severity in individual patients are lacking. This study aims to determine/categorize fatigue severity among children, adolescents, and young adults with ABI. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included young patients admitted to outpatient rehabilitation and their parents. To determine fatigue, the PedsQL™Multidimensional-Fatigue-Scale was used (MFS, scores 0-100, lower scores = higher fatigue, patient-/parent-reported). Based on scores from a…

Cognitive behavioural therapy for chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome: outcomes from a specialist clinic in the UK.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive behavioural therapy is commonly used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome and has been shown to be effective for reducing fatigue and improving physical functioning. Most of the evidence on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome is from randomised control trials, but there are only a few studies in naturalistic treatment settings. Our aim was to examine the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome in a naturalistic setting and examine what factors, if any, predicted outcome. DESIGN: Using linear mix…

Do all patients with cancer experience fatigue? A longitudinal study of fatigue trajectories in women with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common and expected side effect of cancer treatment. However, the majority of studies to date have focused on average levels of fatigue, which may obscure important individual differences in the severity and course of fatigue over time. The current study was designed to identify distinct trajectories of fatigue from diagnosis into survivorship in a longitudinal study of women with early-stage breast cancer. METHODS: Women with stage 0 to stage IIIA breast cancer (270 women) were recruited before (neo)adjuvant therapy with radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and/or endocrine t…
