Dietary Omega-3 Fatty Acids Alter Hepatic Lipid Oxidation and Oxidative Stress Markers in Postpartum Dairy Cows.

Omega-3 (ω-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids are well recognized for their potential to influence metabolic adaptation in dairy cows during the transition period. This study evaluated the effects of calcium salts enriched with ω-3 fatty acids, including α-linolenic acid and long-chain ω-3 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, on hepatic lipid metabolism-related proteins, oxidative stress biomarkers, and liver function in postpartum dairy cows. Prior to calving, cows received a total mixed ration supplemented with 0.400 kg dry matter (DM)/day of calcium salts derived from

Astaxanthin and omega-3 fatty acids enhance endometrial receptivity in a rat model of polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) adversely affects endometrial receptivity and fertility outcomes. This study investigated whether combining high-dose antioxidants (astaxanthin or omega-3 fatty acids) with metformin improves endometrial receptivity markers, reduces oxidative stress, and normalizes hormone profiles in a PCOS rat model compared to metformin alone or no treatment. Fifty-six female Sprague-Dawley rats (200-250g) were divided into seven groups: Control, PCOS, PCOS + Met, and groups receiving metformin plus either astaxanthin (PCOS + Met + AX5 or PCOS + Met + AX10) or omega-3 (PCOS

OMEGA-3 POLYUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS AND HYPERTENSION: A REVIEW OF VASOACTIVE MECHANISMS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hypertension is an unparalleled risk factor among cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and has been reported to target over 1.4 billion people globally. The Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have been put forward as possible non-pharmacological interventions to control blood pressure because they are known to be vasoactive. The purpose of the systematic review was to summarize available evidence on the vasoactive properties of omega-3 PUFAs, and how these properties apply in managing hypertens

The role of lipid emulsions containing omega-3 fatty acids for medical and surgical critical care patients.

In critical illness the regulation of inflammation and oxidative stress can improve patient outcomes, and thus omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been used as part of parenteral nutrition (PN) owing to their potential anti-inflammatory effects. The international lipids in PN Summit, encompassed discussions and the production of consensus guidelines concerning PN intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) use in critical care. The Lipid Summit participants agreed that the inclusion of fish oil in ILEs is associated with meaningful clinical benefits without signals of harm, based on a strong

Dietary omega-3 fatty acids affect the growth performance of broiler chickens reared at high stocking density.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary omega-3 fatty acids in broiler chickens exposed to high stocking density (SD) on growth performance, carcass characteristics, breast meat quality, blood biochemical indices, nutrient digestibility and litter quality. A total of 420 one-day-old broilers were used in 2 × 2 factorial arrangements with 2 levels of SD (low: 9 birds/ m2 and high: 17 birds/ m2) and 2 levels of omega-3 fatty acids (low and high omega-3; 0.057 and 0.5% of the diet, respectively) in a completely randomized design with 5 replicates for each treatment.

Curcumin and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as bioactive food components with synergistic effects on Alzheimer's disease.

Curcumin and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFA) are multifunctional compounds which play an important role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and little has been addressed about the role of these two compounds together in the progression of the disease. There is evidence of the beneficial effect of combined administration of ω-3 PUFA and other dietary supplements such as vitamins and polyphenols in the prevention of AD, although much remains to be understood about their possible complementary or synergistic activity. Therefore, the objective of this work is to review the research focused

Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids-Vascular and Cardiac Effects on the Cellular and Molecular Level (Narrative Review).

In the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, in addition to the already proven effective treatment of dyslipidemia, hypertension and diabetes mellitus, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) are considered as substances with additive effects on cardiovascular health. N-3 PUFAs combine their indirect effects on metabolic, inflammatory and thrombogenic parameters with direct effects on the cellular level. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) seems to be more efficient than docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the favorable mitigation of atherothrombosis due to its specific molecular prope

Effects of omega-3 fatty acids and metformin combination on diabetic cardiomyopathy in rats through autophagic pathway.

Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a primary cause of increased morbidity and mortality in diabetics. Evidence has suggested a pivotal role for interrupted mitochondrial dynamics and quality control machinery in the onset and development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1) is a major reporter of selective autophagic activity. Other than controlling the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis, recently peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC-1α) was reported to directly affect SQSTM1 gene expression. Calcineurin, a pivotal mediator of c

The Conundrum of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Cancer Prevention Studies: Which One? How Much? What Biomarkers?

Marine omega-3 fatty acids promote resolution of inflammation and have potential to reduce risk of obesity-related breast cancer. For prevention trials in obese women, inflammatory cytokines, aromatase, and measures of breast immune cell infiltration are logical, as are biomarkers of growth factor, adipokine, and estrogen signaling. Where best to look for marker change: in the circulation (easiest), in benign breast tissue (most relevant), or in visceral adipose (inflammation often most marked)? A null biomarker modulation trial may reflect limitations in design, source and dose of fatty acids
