The role of the gut microbiome and exercise in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

In recent years, the human gut microbiome has been found to influence a multitude of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, with its components type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. It is recognized to be mainly influenced by environmental factors, such as lifestyle, but also genetics may play a role. The interaction of gut microbiota and obesity has been widely studied, but in regard to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as a manifestation of obesity and insulin resistance, the causal role of the gut microbiome has not been fully established. Clinical profile of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in nonobese patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with metabolic syndrome. Worryingly, it has been increasingly reported among nonobese patients. This study aims to analyse patient characteristics of biopsy-proven NAFLD in an Asian cohort and explore differences stratified by body mass index (BMI). METHODS: Clinical, laboratory, and histological data were collected from 263 adults with biopsy-proven NAFLD. Patients with and without obesity (BMI cut-off 25) were compared. The ability to predict advanced liver fibrosis with three non-invasive scores, the NAFLD Fibrosis

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease later diagnosed as myotonic dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Myotonic dystrophy (MD) is sometimes accompanied by metabolic/endocrine disorders, including dyslipidemia, central obesity, and hypogonadism. Due to considerable individual differences in the severity and progression of myopathy, MD patients with minimal-to-mild muscle symptoms might be followed as having other diseases, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). CASE SUMMARY: A 40-year-old non-obese man without a history of regular ethanol consumption was referred to our hospital due to persistent liver dysfunction and hyperlipidemia. His body mass index was 23.4 kg/m2. L

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among underweight adults.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), closely linked to obesity, has also been evident in lean and underweight adults. But data pertaining to NAFLD in underweight adults in Bangladesh is very limited. Therefore, we sought to estimate the prevalence and identify the factors associated with NAFLD in underweight adults in Bangladesh. METHODS: Underweight adults (BMI <18.5 kg/m2) who underwent abdominal imaging from December 2015 to January 2017 were included in this analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify the factors associated with NAFLD in underwe

Association of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in women. Women with PCOS have androgen excess as a defining feature. They also have increased insulin resistance and obesity, which are also risk factors for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, published data regarding PCOS as independent risk factor for NAFLD remain controversial. Therefore, we conducted this study to evaluate the association between PCOS and NAFLD using a large national database. METHODS: We identified adult female patients (≥18 years) with PCOS using the National Inpatient Sample

Molecular insights into the role of mitochondria in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rapidly becoming the most common cause of fatal liver diseases such as cirrhosis, liver cancer, and indications for orthotopic liver transplantation. Given its high prevalence, the absence of FDA-approved drugs for NAFLD is noticeable. In the pathogenesis of NAFLD, it is well known that mitochondrial dysfunction arises as a result of changes in ETC complexes and the membrane potential (Δψm), as well as decreased ATP synthesis. Due to their fundamental role in energy metabolism and cell death decision, alterations in mitochondria are considered to be

Association between Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

To determine whether non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) are connected, and assess the role played by NAFLD in ICH development. A retrospective study evaluated inpatients treated at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University. We divided the patients into Group A (ICH with NAFLD) and Group B (ICH alone). Moreover, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the risk factors for unfavorable outcomes. A total of 128 patients were included: 34 ICH with NAFLD (group A) and 94 ICH (group B). Sixteen patients e

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in patients with psoriasis: therapeutic implications.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver pathology in the western countries. Psoriatic patients are at higher risk of having NAFLD, and at higher risk of experiencing a more severe form of the disease with poorer outcomes. The components of the metabolic syndrome - obesity, lipid abnormalities, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes - significantly correlate with NAFLD progression. The inflammatory state present in psoriasis plays a significant role in development of NAFLD and the metabolic syndrome. All patients with psoriasis and insulin resistance and risk factors for m

The Evolving Role of Liver Biopsy in Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Evaluation patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) imply the need of appropriate assessment of disease severity (i.e. the presence of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)) as well as of the disease stage (i.e. the extent of liver fibrosis). Liver biopsy (LB) is still considered the gold standard for diagnosing NASH as well as for establishing the degree of liver fibrosis. However, due to its invasive nature and costs, use of LB should be restricted to selected patients and, according guidelines and expert opinion, indicated in the following scenarios: a) when LB will guide treatment,

The Role of Lipid and Lipoprotein Metabolism in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Due to the epidemic of obesity across the world, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become one of the most prevalent chronic liver disorders in children and adolescents. NAFLD comprises a spectrum of fat-associated liver conditions that can result in end-stage liver disease and the need for liver transplantation. Simple steatosis, or fatty liver, occurs early in NAFLD and may progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, fibrosis and cirrhosis with increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. The mechanism of the liver injury in NAFLD is currently thought to be a "multiple-hit process" wh

Disturbed Vitamin A Metabolism in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).

Vitamin A is required for important physiological processes, including embryogenesis, vision, cell proliferation and differentiation, immune regulation, and glucose and lipid metabolism. Many of vitamin A's functions are executed through retinoic acids that activate transcriptional networks controlled by retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and retinoid X receptors (RXRs).The liver plays a central role in vitamin A metabolism: (1) it produces bile supporting efficient intestinal absorption of fat-soluble nutrients like vitamin A; (2) it produces retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) that distributes vita

PATHOGENESIS OF HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA DEVELOPMENT IN NON ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is being recognized as an increasingly important contributor to the burden of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. It is often accompanied by obesity and diabetes mellitus and is believed to be the hepatic representation of the metabolic syndrome. HCC development in NAFLD is multifactorial and complex. It is dependent on not only the well-described mechanisms noted in chronic liver injury, but also on the molecular derangements associated with obesity and dysmetabolism. These include adipocyte remodeling, adipokine secretion, lipotoxicity and insu

The adiponectin-SIRT1-AMPK pathway in alcoholic fatty liver disease in the rat.

BACKGROUND: Our previous work showed that binge drinking in the rat induced hepatic steatosis which correlated with reduced expression of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). In this study, we used the rat model to investigate the role of adiponectin (Adip), sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), AMPK, and lipin 1 (LIP 1) signaling, a central controlling pathway of lipid metabolism in hepatic steatosis. METHODS: The serum Adip and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) as well as liver Adip receptors (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2) SIRT1, AMPK, phosphorylated AMPK (p-AMPK), sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs)

Adverse outcomes of pregnancy in women with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the most common liver disease in the world, but little is known about its potential association with pregnancy outcomes. We aimed to investigate pregnancy outcomes in NAFLD. METHODS: The Swedish Medical Birth Register (MBR) was used to identify births between 1992 and 2011 (N = 1 960 416). By linkage with the National Patient Register, we identified women with a diagnosis of NAFLD. The MBR was then used to identify outcomes: gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, Caesarean section, Apgar score <7 at 5 min, preterm birth

[COURSE OF BILIARY SLUDGE ON THE BACKGROUND NON-ALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE].

To date, the factors significantly reduces the tolerance of the liver against the development of NAFLD and GSD. At the stage of biliary sludge cholelithiasis is found in more than half of the patients suffering from NAFLD. BS violates jelchnokamennouu and releaxation activity of hepatocytes, thereby slowing the passage of bile through the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts that aggravate the course of NAFLD. The reasons for the formation of sludge is not completely understood. To date there are no accepted tactics of conducting and treatment of patients with HB in the background of NAFLD

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: need for a balanced nutritional source.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are an increasingly common chronic liver disease closely associated with diabetes and obesity that have reached epidemic proportions. Reports on the prevalence of NAFLD have suggested that 27-34% of the general population in the USA and 40-90% of the obese population worldwide have this disease. Increasing urbanisation rate and associated inappropriate lifestyle changes are not only the risk factors of diabetes, but also unmask genetic predisposition in various populations for the metabolic syndrome and its mani
