Smart device neuropathy.

Compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) in the thigh, commonly referred to as meralgia paresthetica, may be due to obesity, tight clothing and other external factors. We report two cases of meralgia paresthetica due to compression of the LFCN by portable electronic or "smart" devices.

A Heavy Protection.

The wearing of individual protective elements has revolutionized the typology of war wounds. The benefit/risk ratio is particularly satisfying, but several side effects with minor consequences are described, calling for further ergonomic development from manufacturers of these protective elements. This case report describes a meralgia paresthetica by compression of the lateral cutaneous thigh nerve because of the wearing of bulletproof vest. A symptomatic treatment was introduced, and 2 months after the apparition of the symptoms, the patient's condition has improved, with only a slight hypoes

Iliacus haematoma causing femoral nerve palsy: an unusual trampolining injury.

We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who presented to accident and emergency following a trampolining injury. Initially, the patient was discharged, diagnosed with a soft tissue injury, but he re-presented 48 h later with worsening low back pain and neurological symptoms in the left leg. Subsequent MRI revealed a left iliacus haematoma causing a femoral nerve palsy. The patient was managed conservatively and by 6 months post injury all symptoms had resolved. This is the first reported case of an iliacus haematoma causing a femoral nerve palsy, after a trampolining injury. We believe this ca

Schwannoma extending from the umbilical region to the mid-thigh, compressing the major vessels of the right leg: A case report and review of the literature.

Schwannomas are benign, usually encapsulated, nerve sheath tumours derived from Schwann cells. They commonly arise from the cranial nerves as acoustic schwannomas and are extremely rare in the pelvis and retroperitoneal area (<0.5% of reported cases) unless they are combined with Von Recklinghausen disease (type 1 neurofibromatosis). We report the case of a 23-year-old woman with a mass extending from the umbilical region in the abdomen to the upper two-thirds of the thigh. As this tumour is so rare, and in order to ensure optimal treatment and survival for our patient, a computed tomograph

[Multineuritis in essential hypereosinophilia syndrome].

A 72-old-man with a dramatic weight loss, exhibited a mononeuritis multiplex of subacute onset, and myalgia. There was hypoesthesia and weakness on median and ulnar nerves bilaterally, and weakness on left femoral nerve. Electrodiagnostical studies showed an axonal pattern of neuropathy. There was a considerable hypereosinophilia on blood count without any aetiologia found on exhaustive explorations. The idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome with a mononeuritis multiplex was suggested. Histological findings were an acute myelino-axonal degeneration with endoneural oedema, without vasculitis no

Intra-Articular Giant Heterotopic Ossification following Total Knee Arthroplasty for Charcot Arthropathy.

Although the Charcot arthropathy may be associated with serious complications, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the preferred choice of treatment by patients. This case report presents an 80-year-old man with intra-articular giant heterotopic ossification following loosening of femoral and tibial implants and femoral condylar fracture. He had undergone TKA because of Charcot neuropathy seven years ago and had been doing well since. Immediately after a left knee sprain, he became unable to walk. Because he had developed a skin ulcer on his left calf where methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus au

Anatomical Implications Regarding Femoral Nerve Palsy During a Direct Anterior Approach to Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Femoral nerve palsy is a serious neurological complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA) via a direct anterior approach. One hypothesis is that the nerve injury is caused by malpositioning of retractors over the anterior wall of the acetabulum. The purpose of this cadaveric study was to clarify the anatomical features of the femoral nerve around the anterior acetabular rim and the potential risk of nerve injury during a direct anterior approach to THA. METHODS: We dissected 84 cadaveric hips from 44 formalin-embalmed cadavers. When the cadavers were supine, the iliopsoas

Neurologic injuries after total hip arthroplasty.

Neurologic injuries are a potentially devastating complication of total hip arthroplasty (THA). Review of the literature reveals that these injuries are uncommon. The reported incidence ranges from 0.08% to 7.6%. The incidence in primary THA ranges from 0.09% to 3.7% and in revision THA from 0% to 7.6%. Reported etiologies include intraoperative direct nerve injury, significant leg lengthening, improper retractor placement, cement extravasation, cement-related thermal damage, patient positioning, manipulation, and postoperative hematoma. Risk factors include developmental dysplasia of the hip,

Femoral nerve entrapment.

We present 30 cases of femoral nerve entrapment (1999-2003, age range 35-65 yrs), in 13 patients with diagnosis of idiopathic compression and 7 patients of neurovascular conflict. The compression, in the other 10 patients, was iatrogenic: 3 patients following cardiac catheterization for balloon valvotomy, 2 patients following intra-abdominal vascular surgery and 5 patients following laparoscopic hernia treatment. Microsurgical nerve decompression, and the elimination of neurovascular conflict gave satisfactory results. The best result has been observed in neurovascular conflict cases.

Outcomes of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve decompression surgery in meralgia paraesthetica: assessment of pain, sensory deficits, and quality of life.

PURPOSE: Meralgia paraesthetica (MP) is a rare neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN), characterized by thigh pain, paraesthesia, or sensory loss. When conservative treatments fail, surgical interventions such as neurolysis or neurectomy are considered. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of surgical decompression of the LFCN in alleviating pain, addressing sensory deficits, and improving quality of life. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 26 patients who underwent LFCN decompression surgery between 2015 and 2023, with a minimum follow-up period of one y

Interventional and multimodal pain rehabilitation in a child with meralgia paresthetica.

Meralgia paresthetica is a chronic pain syndrome that is extremely rare in the pediatric population. It is manifested by hypesthesia or pain in the distribution of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) and is typically caused by entrapment as the nerve passes deep to the inguinal ligament. This sensory mononeuropathy is rare in children and diagnosis is typically delayed, often leading to prolonged functional impairment and unnecessary medical testing. A 9-year-old girl presented to the pain clinic with a 6-week history of right anterolateral thigh pain first noticed after a nontraumatic

Femoral neuropraxia after vaccination in a 3-month-old infant: a case report.

We report an incidence of a 3-month-old infant who developed femoral neuropraxia after vaccination (diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis/inactivated poliovirus/haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine) in the thigh. To the best of our knowledge, femoral nerve injury after vaccination has not been reported in the literature before. However, this baby made good neurological recovery within 8 weeks after vaccination.

Nerve conduction studies of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Implications in the diagnosis of meralgia paresthetica.

The diagnosis of meralgia paresthetica, while based on clinical suspicion, can be confirmed via electrophysiological testing. Previous testing of the sensory conduction of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve placed the stimulating electrode one centimeter medial to the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). This position is both uncomfortable for the patient and difficult for the operator to perform. The following article suggests an alternate position for the stimulating electrode, four centimeters distal to the ASIS. Twenty subjects served as their own controls and both the old technique and

When Foot Drop Tells a Bigger Story: POEMS (Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal Plasma Cell Disorder, and Skin Changes) Syndrome Revealed by Femoral Plasmacytoma.

POEMS (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal plasma cell disorder, and skin changes) syndrome is a rare multisystem disorder caused by a monoclonal plasma cell dyscrasia, often presenting with a constellation of neuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal protein, and skin changes. Its initial manifestations frequently overlap with more common causes of chronic progressive neuropathy, such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) and diabetic or paraproteinemic neuropathies, which can obscure the diagnosis and delay definitive treatment. We report
