Hyperferritinemia is a hallmark of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). In the HLH-2004 criteria, a ferritin value >500 µg/L is considered positive. However, this level was not determined based on evidence. We compared 123 patients with HLH and 320 patients with other hyperferritinemic conditions, calculated a receiver-operating characteristic, and determined sensitivity and specificity for different values. When encountering a pathogen, all organisms evoke a protective response by inducing defense mechanisms to help fight off the invader. The invertebrate model organism Caenorhabditis elegans has proven to be valuable for studies of the host response and the small nematode mounts a substantial transcriptional response to numerous pathogens. Here, we use global quantitative proteomics to profile the response to infection with E. coli strain LF82 isolated from patients suffering from Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel disease. We show that LF82 infection induces more than one hundred proteins.

BACKGROUND: An international, longitudinal medical follow up examination of male professional road cyclists revealed excessively elevated serum ferritin levels.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the importance of elevated ferritin values among professional cyclists, their relationship with age and nationality, and their evolution over 3 years.

Aspirin has recently been shown to increase endothelial resistance to oxidative damage. However, the mechanism underlying aspirin-induced cytoprotection is still unknown. OBJECTIVE: To study the ferritin level in women using an intrauterine device.
METHODS: 104 women were enrolled before and during use of the intrauterine device. The subjects were divided into four groups according to whether or not they had used oral contraception previously.
RESULTS: There was a significant decrease in ferritin level, particularly in women who had not used contraception previously (Student's test).
CONCLUSION: Ferritin assay is a better test for measuring the effect of an intrauterine device on iron depletion than blood cell count or haemoglobin level.
