Association of prior criminal charges and convictions with subsequent violent and firearm-related crime: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal violence is a pressing public health problem in the United States. Those who interact with the criminal legal system are likely to experience multiple intersecting risks that increase the probability of subsequent violence perpetration. To inform development and implementation of risk-reduction interventions within the criminal legal system or for those involved in it, there is a need for contemporary population-level estimates of violence perpetration risk among those with prior criminal charges or convictions. METHODS: In this state-wide retrospective cohort study o

Redlining, reinvestment, and racial segregation: a bayesian spatial analysis of mortgage lending trajectories and firearm-related violence.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, firearm-related violence disproportionately impacts low-income, racially segregated communities more than affluent, predominantly White neighborhoods. This trend stems from historical disinvestment, discriminatory lending practices, and persistent structural inequalities. Housing policies have enforced racial segregation, limiting wealth accumulation in low-income communities. This study examines the relationship between historical and contemporary lending discrimination in mortgage originations and firearm-related violence in Chicago, Illinois. By analyzing i

Extreme Heat and Firearm Violence in New York City Public Housing: The Mitigating Role of Air Conditioning.

Higher outdoor temperatures are associated with greater incidence of firearm violence in urban areas in the United States. This study adds to the existing literature base by exploring the potential mitigating role of air conditioning (AC). The setting for this repeated-measures ecological cross-sectional study is New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments, which are known to experience disproportionate rates of firearm violence. We extracted data for 2012-2017 for two types of shooting events: all New York City (NYC) shootings and those in NYCHA housing. Negative binomial mixed-effec

Association of medical conditions and firearm suicide among legal handgun purchasers in California: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a pressing public health problem, and firearm owners are at especially elevated risk. Certain health conditions are markers of suicide risk, but more research is needed on clinical risk markers for suicide among firearm owners specifically. Our goal was to examine associations of emergency department and inpatient hospital visits for behavioral and physical health conditions with firearm suicide among handgun purchasers. METHODS: This was a case-control study of 5415 legal handgun purchasers in California who died between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2013. Cases we

Association of mental disorders with firearm suicides: A systematic review with meta-analyses of observational studies in the United States.

In the United States (US), 61% of all suicide cases may involve firearms, and some evidence suggests that mental disorders may play a role in suicide by firearm. We performed the first systematic review and meta-analyses to investigate: (i) whether mental disorders are associated with suicide by firearm, and (ii) whether the risk of using a firearm compared with alternative means is associated with higher levels of suicide in individuals with a mental disorder METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched twelve databases from inception to the 24th of May 2020. We retrieved 22 observational studies conduc…

Mediation of Firearm Violence and Preterm Birth by Pregnancy Complications and Health Behaviors: Addressing Structural and Postexposure Confounding.

Firearm violence may indirectly affect health among pregnant women living in neighborhoods where it is endemic. We used birth, death, emergency department, and hospitalization data from California from 2007-2011 to estimate the association between living in a neighborhood with high firearm violence and preterm delivery, and assessed whether there was mediation by diagnoses of pregnancy complications and health behaviors during pregnancy. We used an ensemble machine learning algorithm to predict the propensity for neighborhoods to be classified as having a high level of firearm violence. Risk d

Committing Suicide With Handgun Wounds in the Head Using a Defective Firearm: About 2 Unusual Autopsy Cases.

We report 2 unusual autopsy cases with head handgun wounds using defective firearms in a suicidal context. In the first case, a 78-year-old man was found hanged from a tree, with a Lefaucheux revolver lying on the tree. In the right temporal region, there was an entrance wound with a bullet still in place, responsible for a mild cerebral contusion, without bone defect. The main cause of death was hanging. In the second case, a 60-year-old man died at home after shooting himself in the head several times with a 22-long rifle revolver. The autopsy showed 13 entrance wounds on the scalp. Most of …

The Macroeconomic Consequences Of Firearm-Related Fatalities In OECD Countries, 2018-30: A Value-Of-Lost-Output Analysis.

We modeled gross domestic product (GDP) losses attributable to firearm-related fatalities in each of thirty-six Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries using the value-of-lost-output approach from 2018 to 2030. There are three categories of firearm-related fatalities: physical violence, self-harm, and unintentional injury. We project that the thirty-six OECD countries will lose $239.0 billion in cumulative GDP from 2018 to 2030 from firearm-related fatalities. Most of these losses ($152.5 billion) will occur as a result of fatalities in the US. In 2030 alone, the

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SCFN) is a noninfectious panniculitis that occurs in term infants who experience significant distress in the 1st weeks of life, including hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Since the introduction of therapeutic hypothermia for HIE, there have been a few published case reports of SCFN, following this modality of treatment. Although, most cases of SCFN resolve spontaneously, SCFN may be associated with hypercalcemia, which may sometimes reach dangerous levels. Approaches used for the management of this potentially life-threatening condition, include hyperhydration,
