Multi-stage classification of Alzheimer's disease from 18F-FDG-PET images using deep learning techniques.

The study aims to implement a convolutional neural network framework that uses the 18F-FDG PET modality of brain imaging to detect multiple stages of dementia, including Early Mild Cognitive Impairment (EMCI) and Late Mild Cognitive Impairment (LMCI), and Alzheimer's disease (AD) from Cognitively Normal (CN), and assess the results. 18F-FDG PET imaging modality for brain were procured from Alzheimer's disease neuroimaging initiative's (ADNI) repository. The ResNet50V2 model layers were utilised for feature extraction, with the final convolutional layers fine-tuned for this dataset's multi-clas

Effects of MRI protocols on brain FDG uptake in simultaneous PET/MR imaging.

PURPOSE: To investigate the potential effects of MRI protocols on brain FDG uptake in simultaneous PET/MR imaging. METHODS: Seventy healthy subjects and ten patients with temporal lobe epilepsy were enrolled. Healthy subjects were divided to three groups to undergo different PET/MR scan protocols: "continuous MRI" with MRI stimulation presented during the whole scan, "late MRI" with MRI stimulation started after 40 min glucose uptake, and "no MRI" without MRI stimulation at all. Region-wise and voxel-wise differences in FDG uptake among the three protocols were compared. All epilepsy patients

Effects of pharmacological treatments on neuroimaging findings in borderline personality disorder: A review of FDG-PET and fNIRS studies.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental condition characterized by instability in identity, interpersonal relationships, emotion regulation and impulsivity. These symptoms seem to be associated to specific brain alterations, which have been largely investigated. In particular, positron emission tomography (PET) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) have demonstrated abnormalities in brain metabolism and hemodynamics in BPD, specifically in the fronto-limbic system. However, the role of medications on brain metabolism and hemodynamics in BPD is still la

Dynamic FDG-PET demonstration of functional brain abnormalities.

Positron emission tomography with fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18 F-FDG-PET) has been used over 3 decades to map patterns of brain glucose metabolism to evaluate normal brain function or demonstrate abnormalities of metabolism in brain disorders. Traditional PET maps patterns of absolute tracer uptake but has demonstrated shortcomings in disorders such as brain neoplasm or focal epilepsy in the ability to resolve normally from pathological tissue. In this review, we describe an alternative process of metabolic mapping, dynamic PET. This new technology quantifies the dynamics of tracer uptak

Inverted FDG Uptake Pattern in Subcutaneous Panniculitis-Like T-Cell Lymphoma.

A 47-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of subcutaneous nodules, erythema, and fever. 18F-FDG PET images demonstrated inverted FDG uptake pattern corresponding to the subcutaneous lesion against lymph nodes. The specimen of the inguinal lesion showed massive infiltration of small lymphocytes in the adipose tissue with rimming adipocytes, whereas very few tumor cells infiltrated the lymph nodes. Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) was diagnosed. SPTCL normally shows quite interesting distribution of tumor cells, that is, lymph node involvement is usually absent.

Utilization of cardiac imaging in sarcoidosis.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is the cardiac, and occasionally the only manifestation, of a systemic disease of unknown etiology inherently challenging to definitively diagnose due to the lack of a reliable gold standard, the current being endomyocardial biopsy, the yield of which is low owing to the patchy nature of involvement. Societal guidelines employ specific criteria to make a probabilistic diagnosis, integrating clinical assessment with conventional and advanced cardiac imaging. AREAS COVERED: This review begins with an introduction to CS, followed by a discussion of diagnost

Unintentional Weight Loss in Adults 65 Years or Older: A Symptom of Physical and Psychiatric Etiologies.

Unintentional weight loss is defined as a more than 5% decrease in body weight within 1 year. Various physical and psychiatric etiologies cause unintentional weight loss, including major depressive disorder (MDD). We present the case of a 69-year-old woman who lost 10 kg in 2 months. She had anhedonia, mobility limitations, and incontinence. Her Mini Nutritional Assessment score indicated malnutrition, whereas her Geriatric Depression Scale score indicated a diagnosis of MDD. Whole-body fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography/computed tomography showed intensely increased FDG upt

Disease specific and nonspecific metabolic brain networks in behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia.

Behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) is common among young-onset dementia patients. While bvFTD-specific multivariate metabolic brain pattern (bFDRP) has been identified previously, little is known about its temporal evolution, internal structure, effect of atrophy, and its relationship with nonspecific resting-state networks such as default mode network (DMN). In this multicenter study, we explored FDG-PET brain scans of 111 bvFTD, 26 Alzheimer's disease, 16 Creutzfeldt-Jakob's disease, 24 semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (PPA), 18 nonfluent variant PPA and 77 hea

[A case of metastatic melanoma in the gallbladder].

Malignant melanoma is an aggressive tumor with a high potential for distant metastases. Autopsy studies have shown that gallbladder metastases are found in 15% of patients. However, metastatic melanoma of the gallbladder is rarely discovered in living patients. A 73-year-old man was reported. The patient underwent surgical removal of malignant melanoma on his back and lymphadenectomy of the axillary lymph nodes. In addition, the patient developed cutaneous metastases to the right axillary and the middle of the chest 1.5 years after the surgery. Consequently, nivolumab chemotherapy was started.

Impact of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/computed tomography in staging of patients with gallbladder cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET/computed tomography (CT) has proven its efficacy in various malignancies; however, currently it is not used routinely for the management of gallbladder carcinoma (GBCa). So, we tried to review and analyze the impact of FDG PET/CT in the staging workup of gallbladder carcinoma. METHODS: Databases like PubMed, SCOPUS, and EMBASE were searched for published original studies on F-18 FDG PET/CT in staging workup gallbladder carcinoma till December 2020. The included studies were assessed using the Revised Tool for the Quality Assessment of D

Prospect of positron emission tomography for abdominal aortic aneurysm risk stratification.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) disease is characterized by an asymptomatic, permanent, focal dilatation of the abdominal aorta progressing towards rupture, which confers significant mortality. Patient management and surgical decisions rely on aortic diameter measurements via abdominal ultrasound surveillance. However, AAA rupture can occur at small diameters or may never occur at large diameters, implying that anatomical size is not necessarily a sufficient indicator. Molecular imaging may help identify high-risk patients through AAA evaluation independent of aneurysm size, and there is the q

Imaging Immunometabolism in Atherosclerosis.

Over the past decade, there has been a growing recognition of the links between intracellular metabolism and immune cell activation, that is, immunometabolism, and its consequences in atherogenesis. However, most immunometabolic investigations have been conducted in cultured cells through pharmacologic or genetic manipulations of selected immunologic or metabolic pathways, limiting their extrapolation to the complex microenvironment of plaques. In vivo metabolic imaging is ideally situated to address this gap and to determine the clinical implications of immunometabolic alterations for diagnos

Long-term Neuropsychiatric Complications and 18F-FDG-PET Hypometabolism in the Brain From Prolonged Infection of COVID-19.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the worldwide outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 will have long-term negative consequences. Some patients report functional complaints long after recovery from coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), which include fatigue, breathlessness, heart palpitations, loss or alteration of taste and smell, and problems with attention, memory, and cognition. However, the long-term complications for those patients who had severe symptoms and prolonged hypoxia during their course of their hospital stay is still unknown. We report 2 patients with

[Non-convulsive status epilepticus manifesting as ictal catatonia: a case report].

A 66 year-old right-handed female was admitted to our hospital presenting with recurrent episodes of catatonic symptoms consisting of stupor, waxy flexibility, and catalepsy lasting about 5-20 minutes. A brain MRI showed no significant abnormalities. An scalp-electroencephalography (EEG) concurrent with the symptoms showed ictal EEG activities arising from the left fronto-central area, which evolved into the bilateral frontal and bilateral parietal areas together. An 18F-fluorodeoxy glucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET) 4 days after improvement of the symptoms showed hypermetaboli

The place of 18F FDG PET/CT in the management of patients with eosinophilic fasciitis: a case report.

Eosinophilic fasciitis is a rare connective tissue disease with a clinical presentation of scleroderma-like disease. We report a case of a 36-year-old female patient with a 6-month history of progressive stiffness involving her forearms and legs with joint pain. Laboratory examinations showed hypereosinophilia and elevated C-reactive protein. 18F FDG PET/CT showed diffuse and symmetrical increased uptake in the fasciae of the upper and lower limbs, sparing both muscles and fat tissues. Guided biopsy and histologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of eosinophilic fasciitis. 18F FDG PET/CT is
