Cutaneous small-vessel vasculitis following hysterosalpingo-foam sonography (HyFoSy).

We present a case of diffuse skin immune reaction, diagnosed as cutaneous small-vessel vasculitis, following assessment of tubal patency by contrast ultrasound, which appears to be the first reported case of hypersensitivity reaction to sonographic tubal patency testing, based on a literature search. A 32-year-old woman presented with non-thrombocytopenic palpable purpura the day after assessment of tubal patency by two-/three-dimensional hysterosalpingo-foam sonography (HyFoSy) using ExEm® Foam. During real-time ultrasound, the observer identified flow in only the right tube when using saline

Synthesis of porous hydroxyapatites by combination of gelcasting and foams burn out methods.

The biocompatibility and the osteoconductive behavior of hydroxyapatite (OHAp) ceramics are well established. Bioceramics made of OHAp are available in dense and porous form. Recently it has been proved that the volume of bone ingrowth at early times is primarily interconnectivity dependent. A new method for the obtention of porous OHAp ceramics that combine the in situ polymerization (gel casting method) and the foams burn out is proposed. Four polyurethane foams with different cells/cm were used. The foams were fully filled of an OHAp polymerizable suspension that after gelled produced very

AIEgen-Based Biomimetic Nanoplatform for Targeted Synergistic Sonodynamic Therapy and Macrophage Reprogramming of Hyperhomocysteinemic Atherosclerosis.

The instability and subsequent rupture of atherosclerotic plaques are driven primarily by the progressive enlargement of the lipid-rich necrotic cores coupled with local macrophage dysfunction, which readily trigger life-threatening acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Homocysteine serves as an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis. Here, we developed a synergistic nanotherapeutic strategy for hyperhomocysteinemic atherosclerosis (HHcy-AS) by simultaneously targeting foam cells and diseased macrophages. Specifically, an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) sonosensitizer TTPY-C…

[Active Oxygen Influences Foam Macrophage Formation by Regulating Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-γ Expression].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on foam macrophage formation by regulating the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ). METHODS: From June 2018 to December 2021, human blood samples were obtained from 30 healthy donors, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated. The PBMCs were differentiated into human monocyte-derived macrophages (HMDMs) and subsequently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra strain to establish an in vitro human macrophage infection model. ROS production was modulated using N-acetylc

Histopathology attributes of Fox-Fordyce disease.

BACKGROUND: Fox-Fordyce disease is a rare chronic papular condition with a very characteristic clinical presentation but a nonspecific histopathology. Its traditionally described histopathologic features have been criticized as variable and indistinct. Recently, a perifollicular infiltrate of histiocytes with foamy cytoplasm has been described as a consistent and reliable diagnostic finding. METHODS: To evaluate the traditional and most recently described histopathologic and immunohistochemical attributes of Fox-Fordyce disease, we performed a computerized search of specimens in two dermatopa

Chondroitin 4- and 6-sulfate mucopolysaccharidosis--a morphological study.

A 17-year-old patient clinically manifesting gargoyle face, dwarfism, skeletal bone deformity, mild mental retardation and benign course was presented. Biochemically, increased urinary excretion of acidic glycosaminoglycans was confirmed and chondroitin 4-sulfate and chondroitin 6-sulfate were substantiated to be the major components of the acid mucopolysacchariduria. Light microscopically, variable numbers of foam cells were observed in the biopsy materials of the lymph nodes, liver and skin, as well as in the smears of bone marrow aspirates. In the liver, the parenchymal cells appeared vacuo…

Construction of a collagen-based, split-thickness cornea substitute.

Tissue-engineered corneas may become a promising alternative to allografts in the treatment of serious cornea defects because of the tunable characteristics of the biomaterials, biomimetic designs, and incorporation of patient's own cells. In this study, collagen foam was coated with a fibrous mat to mimic the stromal layer and the Bowman's layer. The stromal layer substitute was made of N-ethyl-N-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl)carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide-cross-linked collagen-chondroitin sulfate foam and seeded with primary human corneal keratocytes (HK). Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells

Systematic online academic resources (SOAR) review: Sickle cell disorders.

BACKGROUND: Free open-access medical education (FOAM) resources have become highly utilized resources in emergency medicine education. However, FOAM content often lacks the traditional peer review process, leaving quality assessment to the readers. In this systematic online academic resource (SOAR) review, we apply a systematic methodology to assess the quality of FOAM resources on sickle cell disease (SCD). METHODS: We searched keywords for SCD using FOAM Search and the top 50 FOAM websites listed on the Social Media Index. Resources found were screened using inclusion/exclusion criteria, an

Obtaining and Characterization of the PLA/Chitosan Foams with Antimicrobial Properties Achieved by the Emulsification Combined with the Dissolution of Chitosan by CO2 Saturation.

A new method of obtaining functional foam material has been proposed. The materials were created by mixing the poly lactic acid (PLA) solution in chloroform, chitosan (CS) dissolved in water saturated with CO2 and polyethylene glycol (PEG), and freeze-dried for removal of the solvents. The composite foams were characterized for their structural (SEM, FT-IR, density, porosity), thermal (DSC), functional (hardness, elasticity, swelling capacity, solubility), and biological (antimicrobial and cytotoxic) properties. Chitosan in the composites was a component for obtaining their foamed form with 7.

Xanthelasma or xanthoma of the fallopian tube.

We report a case of a 24-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain, a tense abdomen, and rebound tenderness. A vague, ill-defined mass was palpated, and an ultrasound examination revealed a cystic lesion in the left adnexal region. At laparotomy, a slightly dilated fallopian tube was seen and excised. Light microscopy showed intact fallopian tube mucosa, with a diffuse infiltrate of foam cells in the lamina propria. There were no associated inflammatory cells. The foam cells were positive for CD68 and negative for AE1/AE3. Discontinuous areas of the epithelium also showed epithelial cel…

The role of Collagen Tissue Scaffolds in 3D Endometrial-like Culture Systems: Important Contributions to Cell Invasion and Cell Topography.

Considering the similarity between the invasion processes of cancer cells and embryo implantation, three-dimensional culture models used to study cancer cell invasion can also be applied to embryo implantation studies. In our study, endometrial epithelial cell line (RL95-2) and spheroid-forming trophoblast-like choriocarcinoma cell line (JAR) were cultured on three different biocompatible tissue scaffolds: bacterial cellulose, collagen foam and collagen fibre. These scaffolds are frequently used in cancer cell metastasis and invasion studies, A three-dimensional endometrium-like culture system

Oxidation of chylomicron remnants and vascular dysfunction.

Recent evidence suggests that chylomicron remnants (CMRs), the lipoproteins which carry dietary lipids in the blood, may play a direct role in the initiation of atherosclerosis by influencing vascular function. Unlike low-density lipoprotein (LDL), CMR do not require prior oxidation to bring about potentially pro-atherogenic effects on vascular endothelial cell function and macrophage foam cell formation. However, CMR carry oxidized lipids from the diet and may also become oxidized in the body, thus it is important to establish how the oxidative state of the particles may modulate these effect

AGE-RAGE Axis Stimulates Oxidized LDL Uptake into Macrophages through Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 5-CD36 Pathway via Oxidative Stress Generation.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are localized in macrophage-derived foam cells within atherosclerotic lesions, which could be associated with the increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease under diabetic conditions. Although foam cell formation of macrophages has been shown to be enhanced by AGEs, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. Since cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) is reported to modulate inflammatory responses in macrophages, we investigated whether Cdk5 could be involved in AGE-induced CD36 gene expression and foam cell formation of macrophages. AGE…

TREM2 protects from atherosclerosis by limiting necrotic core formation.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease of the vascular wall driven by lipid accumulation and inflammation in the intimal layer of arteries, and its main complications, myocardial infarction and stroke, are the leading cause of mortality worldwide [1], [2]. Recent studies have identified Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2), a lipid-sensing receptor regulating myeloid cell functions [3], to be highly expressed in macrophage foam cells in experimental and human atherosclerosis [4]. However, the role of TREM2 in atherosclerosis is not fully known. Here, we show that hematopoieti…

Association of osteopontin with ischemic axonal death in periventricular leukomalacia.

Osteopontin (OPN) is a bone matrix protein expressed my macrophages and related to the process of tissue calcification, and is also known to protect ischemic cells. To understand how OPN is involved in the process of ischemic axonal death in periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), we examined the immunoreactivity of OPN and ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba1; microglia/macrophage marker) at various stages of PVL. OPN immunoreactivity paralleled the number of Iba1-positive foam cells; a finding which suggests the production of OPN protein by foam cells. OPN immunoreactivity was not fo…

Nitrogen/phosphorus synergistic flame retardant-filled flexible polyurethane foams: microstructure, compressive stress, sound absorption, and combustion resistance.

Compared with a rigid polyurethane foam, a flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) has more diversified applications including filtration, sound absorption, vibration-proofing, decoration, packaging, and heat insulation. However, its most potential hazard is flammability. Therefore, in this study, we focused on improving its flame retardation and then tested its sound absorption with the addition of nitrogen/phosphorus synergistic flame retardants. The influence of phosphorus-based flame retardants (TCPP, TDCP, and V6) and a nitrogen/phosphorus synergistic flame retardant (melamine-TDCP) on its micr
