Periodontal diseases have long been recognized as a public health problem. Awareness of the destructive nature of periodontal diseases and the importance of a tight control of bacterial plaque are basic concepts of periodontal treatment. In the past decade, there has been a conceptual shift from periodontal diseases as an oral problem to periodontitis having an impact on systemic health. Recent evidence suggests a strong relationship between periodontal inflammatory disease and systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease. It is now generally accepted that inflammation plays an important

UNLABELLED: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) of head and neck is a fulminant infection associated with necrosis of connective tissue which spreads along the fascial planes with high mortality rate. It is usually polymicrobial, odontogenic and occurs more frequently in immunocompromised patients. Because of the rarity of the disease, early diagnosis and early management is often delayed. We present a diabetic patient who developed NF of head and neck following tooth extraction. Because of vigorous teamwork he could be saved from the fatal disease but required extensive plastic repair. Every clinician

We describe the case of a localized lesion of African Histoplasmosis, presenting as a gastric ulcer, with radiological and endoscopic features suggesting malignancy, that was submitted to surgery. Histologic examination of the resected specimen revealed typical yeasts of Histoplasma duboisii. There where no clinical, radiological or endoscopic signs of disseminated disease and conventional antifungal therapy was not prescribed. The patient has been followed for 11 years now, without evidence of relapse. There are few reports of gastrointestinal Histoplasmosis, and even fewer specifically cause

The association of erythema nodosum and dental infectious foci has rarely been described in the literature. This report concerns four women who developed erythema nodosum either following dental treatment associated with gingival bleeding or due to infectious dental foci. In these cases, tooth extraction, removal of dental deposits, interrupted pulp treatment, apical periodontitis, or a relicted root were identified as causes of the development of erythema nodosum. Upon admission to the hospital, these patients also presented fever and and a maximally elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (E

Infrared thermography proved useful for the diagnosis and treatment efficacy studies in the mandibular trauma injuries, trigeminal neuralgies, facial and cervical purulent inflammatory diseases. It appeared also effective in detection of dangerous complications: odontogenous mediastinitis and facial veins thrombophlebitis.

Clinico-epidemiological analysis of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) incidence rate in the Primorski Territory for 25 years has revealed the prevalence of focal forms of this infection (on the average, 50%) and its high mortality rate (on the average, 33% for the focal forms and 6.4% for the meningeal form). Such course and termination of this infection depend not only on the reactive capacity of the patient's body, but, to a great extent, on the virulence of TBE virus circulating in the area under study.

Chronic Chagasic heart disease has many features characteristic of other congestive cardiomyopathies, including ventricular and atrial chamber enlargement, hypertrophy, focal scarring, and mural thrombi. Histologically, there is often lymphocytic inflammation, spotty necrosis, and few parasites. Although immunologic mechanisms have been invoked to explain the development of myocardial degeneration, there have been suggestions that the focal alterations in the heart are secondary to abnormalities of the coronary microcirculation. Based on work from our laboratories which has demonstrated microv

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a life-threatening complication of pharyngeal or dental infections. The aim of this paper was to investigate whether dental or pharyngeal source result from different pathogen(s) in CNF and whether antibiotics, given before admission, influence the antimicrobial resistance of pathogens. In 152 CNF patients, Streptococcus milleri group and Prevotella species were the predominant isolates, frequently copathogens, mostly in dental CNF samples. Penicillin and clindamycin resistance were observed in 39% and 37% of cases, respectively, independently of any pre

Odontogenic infections are a common problem in daily practice. Occasionally, an odontogenic infection evolves an abscess. This article discusses the aetiology, the treatment and the involvement of odontogenic abscesses in the oro-facial region. Their occurrence, course and treatment are depending on the patient's immune response, and on microbial and environmental factors.

INTRODUCTION: Non-typhi Salmonella species cause severe extra-intestinal focal infection after occult bacteremia. Although the number of cases of non-typhi salmonellosis is increasing worldwide among patients with immunocompromising conditions such as human immunodeficiency virus infection, infection is uncommon in immunocompetent subjects. We report a case of septic arthritis and bone abscess due to a rare non-typhi Salmonella organism that developed after a prolonged asymptomatic period.

West Nile virus (WNV) infection is a potentially fatal disease, with meningoencephalitis being its most common neurological manifestation. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) has also been described, but acute paralytic poliomyelitis has only recently been recognized. We report the clinical and electrodiagnostic findings of five patients with WNV infection, who presented with acute paralytic poliomyelitis. Three patients manifested focal asymmetrical weakness, and two had rapid ascending quadriplegia mimicking GBS. Electrodiagnostic studies during the acute illness showed normal sensory nerve action

BACKGROUND: Brucella species are facultative intracellular gram-negative bacteria that cause brucellosis, a common global zoonosis. Infection of the joints is the most common focal complication of brucellosis in humans. The purpose of this study was to identify mediators of focal inflammation during brucellosis.
METHODS: Wild-type (WT) mice are naturally resistant to Brucella infection; therefore, we infected anti-interferon γ (IFN-γ)-treated, or IFN-γ(-/-) mice with Brucella to induce osteoarticular and musculoskeletal inflammation, as we previously described. Mice were infected intraperiton

Focal epithelial hyperplasia is a rare, contagious disease associated with infection of the oral mucosa by human papillomavirus types 13 or 32, characterized by multiple soft papules of the same color as the adjacent normal mucosa. It mainly affects the lower lip, buccal mucosa, and tongue. The purpose of this case report was to describe a rare verrucal lesion located in the upper gingiva that was clinically and histologically consistent with focal epithelial hyperplasia.

A 9-year-old girl presented with arthralgia and myalgia which progressed to developing renal failure and overwhelming septic shock. The underlying cause was assumed to be a periodontal abscess from an upper right deciduous canine tooth. The pus from the abscess grew a toxic shock syndrome toxin 1-producing Staphylococcus aureus. This case illustrates the importance of an oral surgical review of patients presenting with features of toxic shock syndrome if the source of the infection is not immediately obvious.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a relatively uncommon severe soft tissue infection that is characterized by rapid widespread superficial fascial necrosis with undermining of surrounding soft tissue. Recent advances in anaerobic culture techniques have allowed identification of anaerobic organisms, which are now considered to have a vital role in the pathogenesis of this soft tissue infection. Therapy requires both rapid institution of a high level of antibiotics and a radical surgical incision and drainage procedure. All of the aerobic and anaerobic organisms isolated in the reported case of necrotiz
