Operative approach to the frontal skull base: extensive transbasal approach.

An operative technique called the extensive transbasal approach is reported with the operative results of 11 cases. This is an operative mode in which en bloc osteotomy of the orbital roofs and frontal sinus is performed after ordinary bifrontal craniotomy. Through this approach, a far wider operative space than that afforded by conventional operative techniques is possible, and reconstruction of the frontal base can be made securely. We consider this approach of major clinical value.

Computed tomographic assessment of a new nonsurgical sinus trephination technique using a medical bone marrow drill.

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of trephination of the frontal sinus and injection of antifungal cream using a medical bone marrow drill in dogs. Results were compared with frontal sinus trephination using a standard surgical technique. Bilateral trephination of the frontal sinuses was carried out in the heads of 11 cadavers using a medical bone marrow drill and a surgical bone chuck. The time taken to carry out the procedure using both techniques was compared. Before and after injection of antifungal cream into the frontal sinuses, computed-tomography (CT) scannin

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the frontal sinus presenting as osteomyelitis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to present a case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) originating in the frontal sinus that presented as osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. METHODS: A review of a single case including radiographic, intraoperative, and pathologic findings was done, followed by a discussion highlighting relevant literature. RESULTS: A 55-year-old man presented with pain and swelling of the forehead with 8 weeks duration. He had a history of chronic rhinosinusitis and underwent endoscopic maxillary antrostomies 4 years prior. A presumptive diagnosis of frontal sinusitis with os

[Osteomyelitis of right frontal sinus anterior wall].

INTRODUCTION: The paper describes a very rare, isolated exocranial complication of the purulent frontal sinus inflammation. Frontal bone osteomyelitis occurs either in the course of an acute episode or during the exacerbation of a chronic disease. By distribution, it can be diffuse or circumscript. It is more common in younger males. CASE OUTLINE: The case described is one of a 43-year-old patient with purulent frontal sinusitis developing into osteomyelitis of the anterior wall of the right frontal sinus, accompanied by the exteriorisation of the process into the frontal region soft tissues.

[Neurosurgical approach to orbital tumors].

The transcranial approach to the orbital tumors consists of a subfrontal route after frontal or frontotemporal craniotomy to allow epidural access to the orbital roof. This approach is used for all tumors with intracranial extension as well as for tumors located in the apex of the orbit or medial to the optic nerve in the posterior part of the orbit.

[Frontal sinusitis after transfrontal craniotomy: causes and management].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the causes, clinical manifestation and therapy of frontal sinusitis after transfrontal craniotomy. METHODS: Thirty-three patients with frontal sinusitis after transfrontal craniotomy were included in the study. Among them, 7 cases had frontal sinus abscess and 4 cases had frontal sinus fistula. Twenty-three patients were treated with traditional frontal sinus surgery with facial incision. The nasofrontal dilatation tube was positioned for more than 3 months. Nine patients were treated with endoscopic frontal sinus surgery, and 1 patient was treated with combined endoscop

Three-Dimensional Evaluation of the Frontal Sinus in Koreans.

(1) Background: Among the four paranasal sinuses, the frontal sinus is in the frontal bone. Recent research trends have been focusing on identifying sex based on the frontal sinus. Thus, this study aimed to provide reference data for the frontal sinus in Korean adults by comparing their sizes using a 3D program. Moreover, this study examined the correlation between the size of the frontal sinus and the length of cranial bone. (2) Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data were obtained from 60 (male 30, female 30) patients in their 20 s who visited the Department of Dankook University

Bone defect associated with middle meningeal arteriovenous fistula treated by embolization--case report.

A 57-year-old male presented with a frontal bone defect associated with a middle meningeal arteriovenous fistula (AVF) manifesting as headache. The patient had a history of head injury 19 years previously. Skull radiography and computed tomography demonstrated a left frontal bone defect. Left external carotid angiography demonstrated a middle meningeal AVF at the frontal region, at the same location as the bone defect. The AVF was fed by the bilateral middle meningeal and left deep temporal arteries, and drained by the superior sagittal and ipsilateral cavernous sinuses. The minor feeding arte

Frontal sinus stenting.

Recurrence of frontal sinusitis following external and endoscopic intranasal drainage procedures has been and is presently a challenge to rhinologic surgeons. The complexity of the anatomy, especially with regard to size of the newly created frontal neo-ostium, directly influences long-term success. Frontal sinus stenting is indicated if the neo-ostium is less than 5 mm. Other important factors include excessive denuded bone, remnants of osteitic bone in the frontal recess, and severe mucosal disease as seen in allergic fungal sinusitis and nonallergic eosinophilic rhinitis. Lateralization of

Frontal sinus injuries: primary care and management of late complications.

An approach to treatment of frontal sinus injuries is proposed. For injuries involving the anterior wall of the sinus in which the nasofrontal duct is patent, the anterior wall is reconstituted either primarily or using a bone graft. Injuries involving the posterior wall of the frontal sinus generally necessitate a craniotomy; the frontal sinus in these situations is cranialized and the nasofrontal duct is plugged. In primary injuries of the frontal sinus in which the nasofrontal duct is badly damaged but the posterior sinus wall intact and in late mucoceles or mucopyoceles, all sinus mucosa i

Osteometrical and CT examination of the Japanese wolf skull.

The skulls of Japanese wolf (Canis hodophilax) were osteometrically examined and compared with those of Akita-Inu. The skull total length was not statistically different between two species. However, significant differences were demonstrated between two species in some ratios concerning the frontal bone. CT examination was carried out in the Japanese wolf skull. The data indicated that the frontal sinus is not be largely developed and compressed in the dorso-ventral direction in parasagittal area. The narrow frontal sinus fitted to external shape of the frontal bone. The cribriform plate had a

Exophthalmos associated with frontal sinus osteomyelitis in a puppy.

A three-month-old, male Great Dane puppy developed progressive left exophthalmos, epiphora, and swelling of the left frontal bone. Radiographs revealed obliteration of the left frontal sinus by a bone-like density, and lateral sinus wall thickening with extension into the left orbit. On surgical exploration and trephination, the left frontal sinus was filled with soft bone which contained multiple pockets of mucopurulent material. Cytologic examination confirmed the presence of a large number of neutrophils, osteoclasts, and osteoblasts; and both extracellular and intracellular, filamentous, b

Theoretical model of impact mitigation mechanisms inherent to the North American bison skull.

North American bison (Bovidae: Bison bison) incur blunt impacts to the interparietal and frontal bones when they engage in head-to-head fights. To investigate the impact mitigation of these bones, a finite element analysis (FEA) of the skull under loading conditions was performed. Based on anatomical and histological studies, the interparietal and frontal bones are both comprised of a combination of haversian and plexiform bone and are both underlain by bony septa. Additionally, the interparietal bone is thicker than the frontal bone. Data regarding the mechanical properties of bison bone are
