The utilization of forages grown on metal-contaminated soil can increase the risk of heavy metals entering the food chain and affecting human health because of elevated toxic metal concentrations. Meanwhile, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) as signaling molecules are known to promote plant growth in metal-contaminated soils. However, the regulatory mechanisms of such molecules in plant physiology and soil biochemistry have not been well-documented. Exposure of Lemna sp. to SO2 resulted in an increased activity of superoxide dismutase. About 3 to 4 fold increase in the activity was observed within 30 minutes after the plants were fumigated with 10 ml/l of SO2. The present in vitro study shows the efficacy of two antimite products (ByeMite = phoxim, Mite-Stop = neem seed extract) against all developing stages of the important red chicken mite Dermanyssus gallinae (obtained at two farms in France and Germany). Phosphine (PH3) is a highly toxic, corrosive, flammable, heavier-than-air gas that is a commonly used fumigant. When used as a fumigant, PH3 can be released from compressed gas tanks or produced from commercially available metal phosphide tablets.
