BACKGROUND: In South Africa, heterosexual couples are at risk for HIV infection and transmission through substance use, gender-based violence and traditional gender roles, and sex risk behaviors such as having multiple partners and unsafe sex.
METHODS: To address these interconnected HIV risks among heterosexual couples, we used the ADAPT framework to modify an existing, efficacious women's HIV prevention intervention (the Western Cape Women's Health CoOp) to include components of an evidence-based couple's intervention from the United States (Project Connect) and components from the Men as P

BACKGROUND: This case presents a detailed forensic examination of a unique femicide case followed by the perpetrator's suicide.
CASE REPORT: On a Sunday afternoon, a 52 year old man killed his 43 year old partner in their home with eleven stab wounds. A few minutes later, he committed suicide by suspending himself to a tree in their home garden by means of a rope. This unique case is interesting because of the combination of methods used for both homicide and suicide, as well as the relationship dynamics between the victim and perpetrator. The perpetrator committed homicide by stabbing and th

Workplace violence is a major occupational issue concerning doctors that has a significant impact on their physical and psychological well-being. This ultimately affects the health care services of the country. Patient-led episodes of verbal violence are more prevalent in Asian countries, especially in the emergency department, psychiatric wards, and intensive care units, mostly faced by junior doctors and residents. Some common precursors of violence against doctors are patients and their attendants' dissatisfaction and low impulse control, poor administration, miscommunication, infrastructur

The current study examined relationships between interpersonal violence victimization and smoking from childhood to adulthood. Data were from a community-based longitudinal study (N = 808) spanning ages 10 - 33. Cross-lag path analysis was used to model concurrent, directional, and reciprocal effects. Results indicate that childhood physical abuse predicted smoking and partner violence in young adulthood; partner violence and smoking were reciprocally related in the transition from young-adulthood to adulthood. Gender differences in this relationship were not detected. Social work prevention e

The purpose of the current study was to explore the experiences of women who have been affected by violence and received mental health care. A qualitative phenomenological design was used with in-depth interviews and personal letters in a sample of 29 women from a public mental health center of Madrid, Spain, who were affected by physical, mental, and/or sexual abuse. The analysis revealed three themes: (1) Living With Fear; (2) Feeling Guilty; and (3) Experiencing the Imposition of So-Called "Womanly Duties" (i.e., being a maid, babysitter, and/or sexual slave). The current study highlights t

BACKGROUND: Patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders are vulnerable to violent victimization. However, no evidence-based interventions are available to reduce patients' vulnerability. An exploration of the characteristics of physical and sexual violence can provide valuable information to support the development of interventions for these patients. This study aimed to examine gender differences in characteristics of violent victimization in patients with dual diagnosis.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey study recent incidents of physical and sexual

This article examines evidence for violence as reflected in skull injuries in 378 individuals from Neolithic Denmark and Sweden (3,900-1,700 BC). It is the first large-scale crossregional study of skull trauma in southern Scandinavia, documenting skeletal evidence of violence at a population level. We also investigate the widely assumed hypothesis that Neolithic violence is male-dominated and results in primarily male injuries and fatalities. Considering crude prevalence and prevalence for individual bones of the skull allows for a more comprehensive understanding of interpersonal violence in

BACKGROUND: Locally representative research and data on violence against children are important to understand the nature and scale of the issue and to inform effective prevention and response programs and policies. In Senegal, few population-level data estimating the prevalence of physical, emotional, or sexual violence against adolescents exist.
OBJECTIVE: This study assesses whether the gender of adolescents in two Senegalese districts is associated with having experienced emotional, physical, or sexual violence and whether such associations vary depending on district of residence and pover

BACKGROUND: Migrants living in precarious conditions often face gendered violence (GV) and poor mental health (MH). However, most of the existing GV and MH measures assume residentially stable populations, missing migration-related precarity or structural conditions shaping migrants' experiences. As a result, the intersection of GV, poor MH and precarity across migrant populations remains unstudied, especially in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings, that the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)-funded research programme Gendered Violence and Poor Mental Health amon

Interpersonal violence against women (VAW), particularly femicide, remains a critical public health concern in Africa. Although age-standardized death rates have declined between 1990 and 2021, overall rates remain significantly higher than the global average. To better understand this issue, we conducted a descriptive analysis using modeled estimates from the Global Burden of Disease 2021 study to examine femicide trends across 54 African countries from 1990 to 2021. We assessed mortality using age-standardized mortality rates and morbidity using disability-adjusted life years. We found that

OBJECTIVES: Persons engaged in the sex industry are at greater risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections than the general population. One major factor is exposure to higher levels of risky sexual activity. Expanding condom use is a critical prevention strategy, but this requires negotiation with those buying sex, which takes place in the context of cultural and economic constraints. Impoverished individuals who fear violence are more likely to forego condoms.
METHODS: Here we tested the hypotheses that poverty and fear of violence are two structural drivers of HIV infection risk i

Climate change disproportionately affects poorer countries like Uganda, intensifying poverty and livelihood stress, which can escalate gender-based violence (GBV). Although the parent study was not designed to focus on GBV, GBV emerged repeatedly during interviews and focus groups; this paper presents a GBV-focused thematic analysis of those narratives. Particularly, we examine how GBV interconnects with poverty, shifting gender roles, alcoholism, environmental stress, and family planning dynamics. Between April and July 2021, we conducted an exploratory qualitative research study that compris

As part of a study on etiology of sexually transmitted infections (STI) among 520 women presenting at the STI clinic in Nairobi, data on partner violence and its correlates were analyzed. Prevalence of lifetime physical violence was 26%, mainly by an intimate partner (74%). HIV seropositive women had an almost twofold increase in lifetime partner violence. Women with more risky sexual behavior such as early sexual debut, number of sex partners, history of condom use and of STI, experienced more partner violence. Parity and miscarriage were associated with a history of lifetime violence. We fou

BACKGROUND: Male perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV) is under-researched. In this Article, we present data for the prevalence of, and factors associated with, male perpetration of IPV from the UN Multi-country Cross-sectional Study on Men and Violence in Asia and the Pacific. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of perpetration of partner violence, identify factors associated with perpetration of different forms of violence, and inform prevention strategies.
METHODS: We undertook standardised population-based household surveys with a multistage representative sample of men aged 18-

The purpose of this study is to estimate the gender-specific probability of a violent spouse also physically abusing his or her child within a representative sample. The study is based on a sample of 3,363 American parents interviewed for the 1985 National Family Violence Survey. The study shows that marital violence is a statistically significant predictor of physical child abuse. The greater the amount of violence against a spouse, the greater the probability of physical child abuse by the physically aggressive spouse. This relationship is stronger for husbands than for wives. The probabilit

BACKGROUND: Preventing intimate partner violence or dating violence (DV) among adolescents is a public health priority due to its magnitude and damaging short and long-term consequences for adolescent and adult health. In our study protocol, we complement prior experiences in DV prevention by promoting protective factors (or assets) against gender violence such as communication skills, empathy and problem-solving capability through "Cinema Voice", a participatory educational intervention based on adolescents' strengths to tackle DV.
METHODS/DESIGN: A longitudinal quasi-experimental educationa

Research investigating the experiences of women experiencing homelessness often highlights the prevalence of (sexual/domestic) violence and abuse in their trajectories. Drawing on observations across a sample of English statutory and voluntary sector homelessness services and 60 semi-structured interviews with practitioners and with women with homelessness experiences, this study explores these experiences of gender-based violence and the relational impact these may have had on women's help-seeking. Findings suggest that experiences of violence are often normalized, leading some of the women t

Relative to cisgender people, transgender individuals not only are at an elevated risk of experiencing at least one form of physical or sexual violence, but also at an increased risk of polyvictimization: that is, exposure to multiple types of violence over the life course. Given that polyvictimization increases vulnerability to adverse mental and physical health sequelae, there is a pressing need to identify which sociodemographic subgroups of transgender people are at greater risk of polyvictimization. Understanding these risk profiles will have important implications for developing transgen

BACKGROUND: Significant disparities in substance use severity and treatment persist among women who use drugs compared to men. Thus, we explored how identifying as a woman was related to drug use and treatment experiences.
METHODS: The study recruited participants for a qualitative interview study in Boston and San Francisco from January-November 2020. Self-identified women, age ≥ 18 years, with nonprescribed opioid use in the past 14 days were eligible for inclusion. The study team developed deductive codes based on intersectionality theory and inductive codes generated from transcript revie
