Dynamic population artificial bee colony algorithm for multi-objective optimal power flow.

This paper proposes a novel artificial bee colony algorithm with dynamic population (ABC-DP), which synergizes the idea of extended life-cycle evolving model to balance the exploration and exploitation tradeoff. The proposed ABC-DP is a more bee-colony-realistic model that the bee can reproduce and die dynamically throughout the foraging process and population size varies as the algorithm runs. ABC-DP is then used for solving the optimal power flow (OPF) problem in power systems that considers the cost, loss, and emission impacts as the objective functions. The 30-bus IEEE test system is prese

A pre-train and fine-tune framework for adaptive boosting of pre-trained polygenic risk scores.

Polygenic risk scores are widely used for predicting genetic risk across complex diseases and traits, and several pre-trained models have been developed. Few approaches leverage these pre-trained polygenic risk scores to further refine predictive performance. Here, we present Adaptive Boosting of pre-trained Polygenic Risk Socres, a fine-tuning framework that refines pre-trained polygenic risk score models through adaptive variable selection and model boosting to identify additional predictive signals that may not be fully captured by the original models. Simulations show that our framework ca

A Data-Driven Method for Determining the Loading Spectrum in Fatigue Tests for Working Device of Engineering Machinery.

The working device of a wheel loader is a critical component of construction machinery and is subjected to long-term random loads during operation, making it prone to fatigue damage. To evaluate whether it satisfies the design life requirements, load spectra are typically extracted and fatigue life analysis is performed. However, the determination of the load spectrum remains a key challenge, as no standardized method is currently available in the field of construction machinery. To this end, this paper proposes an inverse VIM based on a data-driven model and a genetic algorithm to invert the

Molecular Characterization and Genetic Subclassification Comparison of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma: Real-Life Experience with 74 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a heterogeneous entity. Lately, several algorithms achieving therapeutically and prognostically relevant DLBCL subclassification have been published. METHODS: A cohort of 74 routine DLBCL cases was broadly characterized by immunohistochemistry (IHC), fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of the BCL2, BCL6, and MYC loci, and comprehensive high-throughput sequencing (HTS). Based on the genetic alterations found, cases were reclassified using two probabilistic tools - LymphGen and Two-step classifier, allowing for comparison of the two m

Pharmacogenetics of vitamin K antagonists: useful or hype?

Oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT) based on vitamin K antagonists (VKAs; coumarin derivatives) is the current mainstay for the prevention and long-term treatment of a variety of thromboembolic disorders. Care of patients on OAT is challenging due to considerable variability in the response to a particular dose. This has been attributed to environmental, demographic, clinical and genetic variables. Individualized responses represent a major clinical challenge because patients may experience adverse health outcomes from bleeding or thrombosis as a result of over- or under-coagulation, respectively

Genetic modifiers and phenotypic variability in neuromuscular disorders.

Neuromuscular disorders are mostly rare diseases with autosomal dominant, recessive, or X-linked inheritance. Interestingly, among patients carrying the same mutations, a range of phenotypic severity is reported. This phenotypic variability in neuromuscular disorders is still not fully understood. This review will focus on genetic modifiers and will briefly describe metabolic pathways, in which they are involved. Genetic modifiers are variants in the same or other genes that modulate the phenotype. Proteins encoded by genetic modifiers in neuromuscular diseases are taking part in different met

Identification of pancreatic cancer risk factors from clinical notes using natural language processing.

OBJECTIVES: Screening for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is considered in high-risk individuals (HRIs) with established PDAC risk factors, such as family history and germline mutations in PDAC susceptibility genes. Accurate assessment of risk factor status is provider knowledge-dependent and requires extensive manual chart review by experts. Natural Language Processing (NLP) has shown promise in automated data extraction from the electronic health record (EHR). We aimed to use NLP for automated extraction of PDAC risk factors from unstructured clinical notes in the EHR. METHODS: We f

Semi-quantitative models for identifying potent and selective transthyretin amyloidogenesis inhibitors.

Rate-limiting dissociation of the tetrameric protein transthyretin (TTR), followed by monomer misfolding and misassembly, appears to cause degenerative diseases in humans known as the transthyretin amyloidoses, based on human genetic, biochemical and pharmacologic evidence. Small molecules that bind to the generally unoccupied thyroxine binding pockets in the native TTR tetramer kinetically stabilize the tetramer, slowing subunit dissociation proportional to the extent that the molecules stabilize the native state over the dissociative transition state-thereby inhibiting amyloidogenesis. Extensions to pedigree analysis I. Likehood calculations for simple and complex pedigrees.

A graph theoretic definition of pedigrees is given and a distinction drawn between simple and complex pedigrees. Algorithms are presented to calculate the likeihood of any kind of pedigree, assuming only segregation at a finite set of loci, nonassortative mating and no environmental correlations; multiple births and consanguineous marriages are explicity allowed for. The formulation given can lead to more powerful genetic counselling, segregation analysis and linkage analysis.

Spatial prediction of human brucellosis susceptibility using an explainable optimized adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system.

Brucellosis, a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella bacteria, poses significant risks to human, livestock, and wildlife health, alongside economic losses from livestock morbidity and mortality. This study improves Human Brucellosis Susceptibility Mapping (HBSM) by integrating the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) with meta-heuristic algorithms, including Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Boruta-XGBoost identified key covariates, while VIF and tolerance tests addressed collinearity, and Shapley additive explanation (SHAP) values enhanced model interpretabi

Equilibrium properties of a multi-locus, haploid-selection, symmetric-viability model.

Under haploid selection, a multi-locus, diallelic, two-niche Levene (1953) model is studied. Viability coefficients with symmetrically opposing directional selection in each niche are assumed, and with a further simplification that the most and least favored haplotype in each niche shares no alleles in common, and that the selection coefficients monotonically increase or decrease with the number of alleles shared. This model always admits a fully polymorphic symmetric equilibrium, which may or may not be stable. We show that a stable symmetric equilibrium can become unstable via either a super

A Bayesian scoring rule on clustered event data for familial risk assessment - An example from colorectal cancer screening.

Colorectal cancer screening is well established. The identification of high risk populations is the key to implement effective risk-adjusted screening. Good statistical approaches for risk prediction do not exist. The family's colorectal cancer history is used for identification of high risk families and usually assessed by a questionnaire. This paper introduces a prediction algorithm to designate a family for colorectal cancer risk and discusses its statistical properties. The new algorithm uses Bayesian reasoning and a detailed family history illustrated by a pedigree and a Lexis diagram. Th

Preoperative Identification of Benefit from Surgery for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma.

In the absence of standardized treatment algorithms for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, one of the main difficulties remains patient allocation to therapies with potential benefit. This article discusses clinical, radiologic, pathologic, and molecular prognostic factors as well as genetic background leading to preoperative identification of benefit from surgery, which have been investigated over the past years to simplify and at the same time specify patient selection for surgical treatment.

Risk assessment for epithelial ovarian cancer: proposing a new approach to a deadly problem.

Presently the majority of women diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) have advanced stage disease (III-IV) with a poor 5-year survival rate (12-30 %). This significantly contrasts when early stage disease is detected, which has a 5-year survival rate approximating 90 %. Therefore, detection of early stage disease is critical to making an impact on outcome. By using genetic algorithms, modifications of transvaginal ultrasonography and use of novel biomarkers, we propose a risk assessment profile to identify at-risk women and enable ovarian cancer screening to become a reality. Promises and pitfalls of Illumina sequencing for HIV resistance genotyping.

Genetic sequencing ("genotyping") plays a critical role in the modern clinical management of HIV infection. This virus evolves rapidly within patients because of its error-prone reverse transcriptase and short generation time. Consequently, HIV variants with mutations that confer resistance to one or more antiretroviral drugs can emerge during sub-optimal treatment. There are now multiple HIV drug resistance interpretation algorithms that take the region of the HIV genome encoding the major drug targets as inputs; expert use of these algorithms can significantly improve to clinical outcomes in

Modeling thermoelectric performance of p-type Cu3SbSe4-based chalcogenide materials using decision trees and structural risk error minimization intelligent computational methods.

Cu3SbSe4-based materials are ternary chalcogenides thermoelectric compounds with unique sphalerite super-lattice structures and adjustable characteristics which stand them out as promising material for attaining efficient thermal and electrical energy conversion. The crystal structure of Cu3SbSe4-based materials consists of Cu-Se three dimensional frameworks with inserted CuSe4 tetrahedra layer. This energy band structure and crystal arrangement in Cu3SbSe4-based materials lead to large seebeck coefficient, low thermal conductivity and large carrier mobility with restricted number of available

Stably encoding phylogenetic trees with folios of leaf addresses.

As genome sequencing data continue to expand, a persistent research challenge is to accommodate the growth of a phylogeny. This situation arises in molecular epidemiology, for example, where new taxonomic groups can appear in real time as pathogen isolates are sequenced. Efficient computational methods have been developed to place new leaves in existing trees, which removes the need to reconstruct trees from scratch. But for these tree extensions to be fully integrated with classification schemes requires a stable encoding of trees that keeps existing tree structures intact as new branches app
