Since the early 1960's knowledge regarding human genetics has increased at an exponential rate. Because genetics was not commonly taught in medical schools before the late 1960's, this review article is intended to acquaint physicians or refresh their knowledge regarding chromosomal, mendelian and multifactorial inheritance and the indications for prenatal diagnosis. Establishing an accurate diagnosis and mode of inheritance is essential in identifying and selecting those families at risk for genetic disease in their offspring. Medical genetics is evolving as a specialty in order to provide co

Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OSCS; OMIM #300373) is a rare X-linked dominant condition caused by mutations in the AMER1 gene (also known as WTX or FAM123B). It is a condition which usually affects females in whom the clinical phenotype can be extremely variable. Conversely affected males typically die in utero or during the neonatal period [Perdu et al. (); Clinical Genetics 80: 383-388; Vasiljevic et al. (); Prenatal Diagnosis 35: 302-304]. There have been a small number of reported cases of surviving males, including three patients who are somatic mosaic for the condition [Ché

The emergence of molecular genetics into a routine medical service is demanding a paradigm shift in medical practice. An adequate reformation of its discipline and technology is required in every field of medical service including nursing. In 2000, the JFCR hospital founded a Familial Cancer Center to provide genetic counseling and genetic testing for cancer patents. Based upon our experiences with 250 families having various cancers, we have attempted to extract issues to be addressed in further detail.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an enveloped RNA virus of the Togaviridae family that causes Chikungunya fever, characterized by fever, myalgia, and arthralgia. Although the mortality rate attributed to CHIKV infection is low, the risk of severe disease increases in young children, the elderly, and people with medical conditions. Given the significant impact of these clinical manifestations, an effective regimen for the treatment of CHIKV infection is needed. The reverse genetics system, an approach to generate a complete virus from cloned cDNA, has been widely used to characterize the replicatio

Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) helps us understand how medical genetics has changed over the last forty years. The concept of the "cancer family" emerged from the realization that members of some families developed cancer more frequently than members of others, which led to a series of strategies by clinicians in the 1960s to persuade others of this. By the early 1990s molecular genetics had transformed the disease, from one that a few physicians believed ran in families, to one with precise genetic components that researchers generally accepted, and that could be detected

The history of psychiatric genetics is informed by this paper, which serves to review the legacy of German psychiatric genetics and its antecedents during the twentieth century. It also serves as an introduction to two new annotated abstracts of basic research papers on family studies of schizophrenia by Ernst Rüdin in 1916 and by Bruno Schulz in 1932, submitted by Kenneth Kendler and Edith Zerbin-Rüdin, together with another paper by them describing the origin and activities of Rüdin's Munich School of Psychiatric Genetics (1917-1945). Our paper also introduces an invited critical summary of

OBJECTIVES: X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease Type 1 (CMTX1), caused by gap junction beta-1 (GJB1) mutations, is the second most common form of CMT. Patients present with length-dependent sensorimotor polyneuropathy and split hand syndrome. Males are more severely affected; females show variable symptoms because of skewed X-inactivation. This study reclassifies a GJB1 variant of uncertain significance as pathogenic using American College of Medical Genetics criteria.
METHODS: A family with neurologic symptoms underwent clinical evaluation, electrodiagnostic studies, genetic testing, and im

Despite pronounced changes in genetic knowledge and technology, the post-World War II philosophical stance on "eugenics" has not changed substantially. By the mid-1900s, as classical eugenics became less genetically naive and the medical profession became increasingly oriented toward disease prevention, a reformed eugenics had greater appeal. Eugenics' surviving influence on medical genetics is best seen in the field of genetic counseling, a discipline that serves prospective parents and families at risk of genetic abnormalities, and whose origins reveal close ties to population genetics. This

Future research in endometriosis must focus on pathogenesis studies in the baboon model, the early interactions between endometrial and peritoneal cells in the pelvic cavity at the time of menstruation, and potential differences between eutopic endometrium and myometrium in women with and without endometriosis. More integration is needed between the areas of epidemiology and genetics. Pelvic inflammation in women with endometriosis could be the target for new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. Important questions remain regarding the relationship between endometriosis and environmental fac

The presented paper illustrates the significance of dental documentation which played a key role in the process of identification of two unknown male cadavers by means of dental features examination. Efficient operations of the district prosecutor's office, which in both cases provided ante mortem dental documentation of a missing person likely to be the victim, led to double positive identification. In the first presented case dental examination proved to be more effective than genetics and contributed to closure of the identification procedures. In the second case it confirmed identity equal

BACKGROUND: The rapid evolution of genetic testing and availability of information has necessitated increased surgeon participation in genetics-related tasks. We sought to characterize knowledge, perceptions, attitudes, and barriers pertaining to genetic literacy among Canadian surgeons who manage patients with a hereditary predisposition to or confirmed cancer.
METHODS: We distributed a Web-based survey to surgeons across Canada from June to December 2023 through relevant surgical societies. We analyzed quantitative and narrative data from the survey descriptively and thematically.
RESULTS:

Addictions include a group of common, heritable psychiatric illnesses that have multiple psychiatric and medical comorbidities. Robust genetic associations have been found for alcohol dependence, nicotine dependence, and cocaine dependence. Common genetic associations have been found between alcohol dependence and aerodigestive cancers and between nicotine dependence and lung disease. These associations highlight the importance of understanding the genetics of substance dependence in the context of its multiple medical and psychiatric comorbidities.

The completion of the Human Genome Project and tremendous advances in automated high-throughput genetic analysis technologies have enabled explosive progress in the field of genetics, which resulted in countless discoveries of novel genes and pathways. Many phenotype- or disease-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with a high statistical significance have been identified through numerous genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and various polygenic risk scoring (PRS) schemes have been proposed to identify individuals with a high risk for a certain trait or disorder. Meanwhile, me

The current explosive growth in developmental biology, fuelled by the almost completed sequencing of the human genome, is bound to have a profound impact upon the practice of medicine and dentistry in the twenty-first century. No other discipline more accurately reflects this impact than embryology, which combines the basic and clinical sciences of genetics, ontogeny, phylogeny, teratology, and syndromology into the essence of modern medical and dental practice. The advent of in vitro fertilization, chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, prenatal ultrasonography, intrauterine surgery, and s

INTRODUCTION: One of the never-ending debates in the developing field of sexual medicine is the extent to which genetics and experiences (i.e., "nature and nurture") contribute to sexuality. The debate continues despite the fact that these two sides have different abilities to create a scientific environment to support their cause. Contemporary genetics has produced plenty of recent evidence, however, not always confirmed or sufficiently robust. On the other hand, the more traditional social theorists, frequently without direct evidence confirming their positions, criticize, sometimes with goo
