Power or speed: Which metric is more accurate for modelling endurance running performance on track?

This study aimed to compare the accuracy of the power output, measured by a power meter, with respect to the speed, measured by an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) sport watch to determine the critical power (CP) and speed (CS), work over CP (W') and CS (D'), and long-duration performance (i.e., 60 min). Fifteen highly trained athletes randomly performed seven time trials on a 400 m track. The CP/CS and W'/D' were defined through the inverse of time model using the 3, 4, 5, 10, and 20 min trials. The 60 min performance was estimated through the po

Using GPS Technologies to Examine Community Mobility in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Objective measures of community mobility are advantageous for capturing movement outside the home. Compared with subjective, self-reported techniques, global positioning system (GPS) technologies leverage passive, real-time location data to reduce recall bias and increase measurement precision. We developed methods to quantify community mobility among community-dwelling older adults and assessed how GPS-derived indicators relate to clinical measures of physical and cognitive performance. METHODS: Participants (n = 149; M ± standard deviation [SD] = 77.1 ± 6.5 years) from the progr

Distribution pattern of the snail intermediate host of schistosomiasis japonica in the Poyang Lake region of China.

BACKGROUND: With the closure of the Three Gorges Dam in 2003 the hydrology of Poyang Lake was altered dramatically leading to significant changes in the environment. In order to assess the impact on schistosomiasis this study assessed the spatial and temporal patterns of the snail intermediate host, Oncomelania hupensis in the Poyang Lake tributaries. The results of the study have important implications for future snail control strategies leading to disease elimination. METHODS: The marshland area surrounding Poyang Lake was divided randomly into 200 × 200 m vector grids using ArcGIS software

Geographical access to electroconvulsive therapy services in Texas.

AIMS: Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a well-established and effective treatment in mood disorders but the use of ECT in Texas is much lower than the general average among the United States. Our goal is to explore the geographical accessibility of Electroconvulsive Services in Texas. METHODS: 22 ECT Centers in Texas listed in State's 2016 annual ECT report were enrolled and georeferenced. We used Esri's StreetMap Premium Network release 1 network dataset to generate 1-hour drive time service areas for these ECTs. We estimated populations within these service areas based on US Census Tract

A GIS analysis of the relationship between sinkholes, dry-well complaints and groundwater pumping for frost-freeze protection of winter strawberry production in Florida.

Florida is riddled with sinkholes due to its karst topography. Sometimes these sinkholes can cause extensive damage to infrastructure and homes. It has been suggested that agricultural practices, such as sprinkler irrigation methods used to protect crops, can increase the development of sinkholes, particularly when temperatures drop below freezing, causing groundwater levels to drop quickly during groundwater pumping. In the strawberry growing region, Dover/Plant City, Florida, the effects have caused water shortages resulting in dry-wells and ground subsidence through the development of sinkh

GIS-based spatial, temporal, and space-time analysis of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

We obtained a list of all reported cases of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Shenyang, China, during 1990-2003, and used GIS-based scan statistics to determine the distribution of HFRS cases and to identify key areas and periods for future risk-factor research. Spatial cluster analysis suggested three areas were at increased risk for HFRS. Temporal cluster analysis suggested one period was at increased risk for HFRS. Space-time cluster analysis suggested six areas from 1995 to 1996 and four areas from 1998 to 2003 were at increased risk for HFRS. We also discussed the likely re

Dynamic modeling of chemical fate and transport in multimedia environments at watershed scale-II: trichloroethylene test case.

A multimedia environmental fate model was developed to study the temporal dynamics and spatial distribution of a chemical pollutant at watershed scale. The theoretical considerations and implementation of the model were described in the accompanying paper (Part I). This paper presents the result of a test simulation on the transport of trichloroethylene (TCE) in the Connecticut River Basin. The simulation results were reported as time series of concentrations and inter-media transport fluxes in the compartments of atmosphere, plant, soil, surface water, and sediment. Predicted concentrations f

Mapping a Plasmodium transmission spatial suitability index in Solomon Islands: a malaria monitoring and control tool.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a challenge in Solomon Islands, despite government efforts to implement a coordinated control programme. This programme resulted in a dramatic decrease in the number of cases and mortality however, malaria incidence remains high in the three most populated provinces. Anopheles farauti is the primary malaria vector and a better understanding of the spatial patterns parasite transmission is required in order to implement effective control measures. Previous entomological studies provide information on the ecological preferences of An. farauti but this information has

Using mobile phone data to predict the spatial spread of cholera.

Effective response to infectious disease epidemics requires focused control measures in areas predicted to be at high risk of new outbreaks. We aimed to test whether mobile operator data could predict the early spatial evolution of the 2010 Haiti cholera epidemic. Daily case data were analysed for 78 study areas from October 16 to December 16, 2010. Movements of 2.9 million anonymous mobile phone SIM cards were used to create a national mobility network. Two gravity models of population mobility were implemented for comparison. Both were optimized based on the complete retrospective epidemic d

Mapping the capacities of fixed health facilities to cover people at risk of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis.

BACKGROUND: The emphasis placed on the activities of mobile teams in the detection of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) can at times obscure the major role played by fixed health facilities in HAT control and surveillance. The lack of consistent and detailed data on the coverage of passive case-finding and treatment further constrains our ability to appreciate the full contribution of the health system to the control of HAT. METHODS: A survey was made of all fixed health facilities that are active in the control and surveillance of gambiense HAT. Information on their diagnostic an

Characterizing spatiotemporal spread of infectious diseases using ellipse-shaped transmission hotspots: application to dengue virus outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Identifying transmission hotspots associated with micro-clustering patterns at the early stages of epidemics is helpful to characterize spatiotemporal spread of infectious diseases. However, standard methods with statistical validation to establish a dynamic warning system for emerging infectious diseases are lacking. We therefore aimed to integrate a geographic information system-based surveillance system and data-driven methods to identify transmission hotspots, thereby assisting decision-makers to implement appropriate policies at the early stages of epidemics. METHODS: We prop

Geospatial analysis of injury severity on major roads in Ghana (2017-2020): implications for targeted injury prevention and control initiatives.

BACKGROUND: Road safety authorities in high-income countries use geospatial motor vehicle collision data for planning hazard reduction and intervention targeting. However, low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) rarely conduct such geospatial analyses due to a lack of data. Since 1991, Ghana has maintained a database of all collisions and is uniquely positioned to lead data-informed road injury prevention and control initiatives. METHODS: We identified and mapped geospatial patterns of hotspots of collisions, injuries, severe injuries and deaths using a well-known injury severity index

[The Scientific Usage of GPS Data in Professional Football: Relevance, Norm Values and Practical Recommendations].

The use of GPS data has become an integral part of the work of strength and conditioning coaches as well as data analysts in professional women's and men's football. Coaches should rely on GPS systems with a comparatively high sampling frequency (18 Hz) in order to validly capture short sprint distances with rapid changes of direction. GPS parameters such as total running distance, number of maximal sprints, accelerations, decelerations, and distance covered in speed and high-speed zones are of high practical relevance for athletic performance and injury prevention. Based on these practically

GPS monitoring of sheep behavior in integrated crop-livestock systems in the Caatinga biome.

Sheep grazing behavior stems from a direct interaction between the animal and the environment. Thus, traditional methods for monitoring ruminant animals are often challenging. The global positioning system (GPS) provides real-time remote sensing of grazing herds. This study aimed to assess the performance and grazing behavior of sheep in integrated cropping systems in the Caatinga biome using GPS. We hypothesized that GPS would accurately identify behavioral patterns in sheep placed in diverse integrated crop-livestock (ICL) systems in the Caatinga biome and that ICL systems would improve fina
