AIMS: The impact of concomitant injuries in patients with proximal femoral fractures has rarely been studied. To date, the few studies published have been mostly single-centre research focusing on the influence of upper limb fractures. A retrospective cohort analysis was, therefore, conducted to identify the impact and distribution of concomitant injuries in patients with proximal femoral fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective, multicentre registry-based study was undertaken. Between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2019, data for 24,919 patients from 100 hospitals were collected in the Registry f

BACKGROUND: Given the demographic changes, the need for effective geriatric intervention is obvious. Geriatric care aims to maintain the highest possible level of independence and quality of life and to reduce the risk of need for care.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the benefits of geriatric care on functional performance, mobility and cognition.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study involved a retrospective analysis of clinical data from 646 patients. At hospital admission and discharge functional status was assessed using the Barthel index. Mobility was evaluated by means of the Tinetti t

We examined the psychometric properties, internal scale reliability and validity, of two geriatric anxiety measures: the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) and Geriatric Anxiety Scale (GAS). We also determined the extent to which memory ability influenced the psychometric properties of these measures. Older adult participants (N=110; M age=75 years) completed self-report, clinician-rated and diagnostic psychiatric measures and a neuropsychiatric battery. GAI and GAS scores had good internal consistency, adequate reliability, and strong convergent validity. GAI scores had better discriminant val

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In geriatric patients with peptic ulcer, the use of NSAID and prevalence of chronic illness have been increased, but the Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infected portion decreased. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcomes of geriatric patients (aged 65 or older) with peptic ulcer bleeding and compare with non-geriatric patients (less than 65 years old).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 88 patients with peptic ulcer bleeding treated with therapeutic endoscopy from January 2006 to December 2006. We compared the clinical chara

BACKGROUND: Trauma centers are implementing geriatric-focused processes of care, including geriatric consult services, to improve outcomes for injured older adults. We hypothesized that trauma centers with a geriatric consult service would have more geriatric-focused processes of care and improved hospital-level mortality for injured older adults.
METHODS: We surveyed US trauma centers regarding compliance with geriatric-focused processes of care, including presence of geriatric consult service, palliative care consult service, geriatric pharmacists, screening for frailty, screening for poten

BACKGROUND: Chronological age is associated with adverse outcomes after abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR), yet many age-linked risks are modifiable. This study evaluated the benefit of integrating geriatric medicine (GM) into a multidisciplinary AWR clinic.
STUDY DESIGN: Using a prospectively maintained database, patients 65 years or older underwent AWR after a preoperative GM consultation were propensity matched in a 1:1 manner to (1) patients 65 years or older before GM integration (NGM) and (2) younger patients (younger than 65 years). Primary outcomes were hospital length-of-stay (LOS)

Because the number of elderly people is increasing worldwide, and the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular diseases increase with age, in current clinical practice we are faced with a large number of geriatric patients requiring oral anticoagulant treatment. Our review highlights some of the particularities of using direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in the geriatric population. We focused on the difficulties of managing DOAC treatment in the presence of geriatric syndromes. We highlighted the practical steps needed to overcome the challenges related to the risk of fall

There is no consensus on the physiologic decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) due to geriatric conditions related with the aging or chronic kidney disease (CKD) itself. In this study, we aimed to compare the CKD progression and associated complications in a large sample of geriatric and non-geriatric patients. The data of in 506 patients at age between 30 to 90 years and diagnosed with CKD at stage 2 and above (15 mL/min/1.73 m2 ≤ eGFR < 90 mL/min/1.73 m2) were collected retrospectively and compared among geriatric (>65 years old) and non-geriatric individuals. It is only by knowing the most common causes of falls in the hospital that appropriate and targeted fall prevention measures can be implemented. This study aimed to assess the frequency of falls in a hospital geriatrics ward and the circumstances in which they occurred and evaluate the parameters of the comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) correlating with falls. We considered medical, functional, and nutritional factors associated with falls and built multivariable logistic regression analysis models. A total of 416 (median age 82 (IQR 77-86) years, 77.4% women) hospitalizations in the ge

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is widespread in geriatric patients and is nearly always multicausal. It is often insufficiently recognized and leads to severe complications. The available and established screening tools all focus primarily on patients with neurological diseases, usually following a stroke.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The working group on dysphagia of the German Society of Geriatrics (DGG), which is comprised of physicians, speech and language therapists and dysphagia therapists, performed a literature review on dysphagia screening tools. Based on the results of the literature

Malnutrition and dehydration are widespread in older people, and obesity is an increasing problem. In clinical practice, it is often unclear which strategies are suitable and effective in counteracting these key health threats. The objective of this guide was to provide evidence-based recommendations for clinical nutrition and hydration in older persons in order to prevent and/or treat malnutrition and dehydration. Further, to address whether weight-reducing interventions are appropriate for overweight or obese older persons. This guideline was developed according to the standard operating pro

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is Class IA indication in patients after an acute cardiovascular (CV) event, with efficacy confirmed even in elderly or frail CV patients CV and geriatric outcomes. However, rate of referral and admission to CR of elderly CV patients remains very low. CV patients admitted in geriatric wards are often complex, multimorbid and frail. Therefore, the present position paper addressees their possible referral to CR, since many have various forms of CV diseases amenable to improve with CR. The multidisciplinary and comprehensive model of CR is applicable to these patients
