Enhancing gesture decoding performance using signals from posterior parietal cortex: a stereo-electroencephalograhy (SEEG) study.

OBJECTIVE: Hand movement is a crucial function for humans' daily life. Developing brain-machine interface (BMI) to control a robotic hand by brain signals would help the severely paralyzed people partially regain the functional independence. Previous intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG)-based BMIs towards gesture decoding mostly used neural signals from the primary sensorimotor cortex while ignoring the hand movement related signals from posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Here, we propose combining iEEG recordings from PPC with that from primary sensorimotor cortex to enhance the gesture d

A common gesture with a rare but potentially severe complication: Re-expansion pulmonary edema following chest tube drainage.

BACKGROUND: Primary Spontaneous Pneumothorax (PSP) is usually considered as a benign pathology occurring in young people. In about half of cases, observation only is purposed. In case of intervention, chest tube drainage remains the preponderant strategy even if no studies conclude about superiority of drainage or aspiration. Re-expansion pulmonary edema (REPE) is a rare but potentially severe complication of chest tube drainage. Risk factors are not well identified, but REPE is more frequent for patients with diabetes, younger than 40 years, with large pneumothorax, lung collapse more than on

Neural reorganization accompanying upper limb motor rehabilitation from stroke with virtual reality-based gesture therapy.

BACKGROUND: Gesture Therapy is an upper limb virtual reality rehabilitation-based therapy for stroke survivors. It promotes motor rehabilitation by challenging patients with simple computer games representative of daily activities for self-support. This therapy has demonstrated clinical value, but the underlying functional neural reorganization changes associated with this therapy that are responsible for the behavioral improvements are not yet known. OBJECTIVE: We sought to quantify the occurrence of neural reorganization strategies that underlie motor improvements as they occur during the p

Electrospun Surface-Modified Epidermal Strain Sensors Enable Silent Speech and Hand Gesture Recognition for Virtual Reality Interaction.

Voice disorders severely limit verbal communication, creating a need for intuitive assistive technologies. To meet this need, we present epidermal strain sensors that capture strain signals during silent speech and hand gesture. A thin electrospun nanofiber layer integrated onto commercial polyurethane films guides uniform, controlled microcrack formation in screen-printed carbon conductive paths, achieving a gauge factor up to 243 over 0-40% strain. Signals from the seven-channel strain sensor array are recognized by a hybrid neural network that combines convolutional and Transformer architec

Enhanced feature fusion with hand gesture recognition system for sign language accessibility to aid hearing and speech impaired individuals.

In the modern world, individuals with intellectual or communication disabilities face significant challenges in communicating with others. To reduce their communication difficulties, a communication system is designed and developed to convert sign language into text and speech. Dynamic hand gesture recognition (HGR) is a preferred option that focuses on human-computer interactions (HCI). HGR investigation is obtaining increasing attention from investigators globally. Also, regular application in day-to-day life, gesture recognition (GR) is beginning to enter education, virtual reality, automot

Noncontact Gesture-Based Switch Improves Communication Speed and Social Function in Advanced Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: A Case Report.

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) enables digital access for individuals with severe motor impairment. Conventional contact-based switches rely on residual voluntary movement, limiting efficiency. We report the clinical application of a novel, researcher-developed noncontact assistive switch, the Augmentative Alternative Gesture Interface (AAGI), in a 39-year-old male with late-stage Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) retaining minimal motion. The AAGI converts subtle, noncontact gestures into digital inputs, enabling efficient computer operations. Before intervention, the partic

From zero- to few-shot: deep temporal learning of wrist EMG enables scalable cross-user gesture recognition.

Objective.Wrist electromyography (EMG) is emerging as an enticing wearable input modality for human-machine interaction. Traditionally recorded from the forearm for use in transradial prostheses, wrist-based EMG sensors are now being integrated into devices such as watches and wristbands for hand gesture recognition (HGR). Consumer familiarity with wrist-worn devices makes wrist EMG a compelling option, but the need for individualized user calibration remains a challenge.Approach.This study therefore evaluated various cross-user models to reduce the calibration burden and compared wrist- and f

A Systematic Study on Electromyography-Based Hand Gesture Recognition for Assistive Robots Using Deep Learning and Machine Learning Models.

Upper limb amputation severely affects the quality of life and the activities of daily living of a person. In the last decade, many robotic hand prostheses have been developed which are controlled by using various sensing technologies such as artificial vision and tactile and surface electromyography (sEMG). If controlled properly, these prostheses can significantly improve the daily life of hand amputees by providing them with more autonomy in physical activities. However, despite the advancements in sensing technologies, as well as excellent mechanical capabilities of the prosthetic devices,

Contribution of transcranial magnetic stimulation in assessing parietofrontal connectivity during gesture production in healthy individuals and brain-injured patients.

Parietofrontal (PF) networks link the posterior parietal cortex to premotor and prefrontal areas, and are involved in the control of many motor and cognitive behaviors in healthy humans. In recent years, electrophysiological experiments have provided a better understanding of the functional specificity and temporal involvement of the PF networks' different components during the planning of visually guided upper limb movements. In particular, transcranial magnetic stimulation has been used to temporarily inactivate a cortical area (virtual lesions) or to assess connectivity using paired-pulse p

Pallidotomy in Parkinson's disease improves single-joint, repetitive, ballistic movements, but fails to modify multijoint, repetitive, gestural movements.

We studied 12 non-demented PD patients in on state before and 3 months after posteroventral pallidotomy (PVP), in order to evaluate the effects of surgery upon an unconstrained, multijoint skilled movement as well as a single joint, repetitive, ballistic movement. A Selspot II System was used for three-dimensional data acquisition, processing and reconstruction of limb trajectories. Specific wrist kinematic features of spatial accuracy (linearity and planarity), temporal attributes (acceleration and velocity), spatiotemporal relationships (velocity-curvature coupling), and joint kinematic vari

ACF-Net: Design of an adaptive cross-modal fusion network for cross-subject wearable EEG-EMG gesture recognition.

Cross-subject gesture recognition in wearable brain-computer interfaces is constrained by four structural deficiencies: symmetric cross-modal attention discarding cortical precedence over muscular execution, priors confined to post hoc analysis, invariance anchored on unimodal features, and adaptation requiring labelled target-domain data. This study closes these gaps by embedding corticomuscular coupling directly into the network architecture rather than recovering it from data.
Approach: ACF-Net is a four-stage pipeline embedding neurophysiological priors directly into fusion. The cortic

Two-Stage Meta-Learning with Matched Feature Regularization for Cross-Subject sEMG Gesture Recognition Under Posture Variation.

Surface electromyography (sEMG)-based gesture recognition has attracted considerable attention in intelligent prosthesis control, human-computer interaction, and rehabilitation assistance. However, practical deployment remains challenging because new users can usually provide only a few labeled samples for calibration. Under cross-subject and posture-varying conditions, this setting further aggravates distribution shifts and can destabilize target-domain adaptation. To address these issues, this paper proposes a cross-subject sEMG gesture-recognition framework integrating training-time augment

Highly flexible self-powered sensors based on printed circuit board technology for human motion detection and gesture recognition.

In this paper, we demonstrate a new integration of printed circuit board (PCB) technology-based self-powered sensors (PSSs) and direct-write, near-field electrospinning (NFES) with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) micro/nano fibers (MNFs) as source materials. Integration with PCB technology is highly desirable for affordable mass production. In addition, we systematically investigate the effects of electrodes with intervals in the range of 0.15 mm to 0.40 mm on the resultant PSS output voltage and current. The results show that at a strain of 0.5% and 5 Hz, a PSS with a gap interval 0.15 mm prod

Modality specific naming and gesture disturbances: a case with optic aphasia, bilateral tactile aphasia, optic apraxia and tactile apraxia.

This study reports a patient who manifested optic aphasia, tactile aphasia, optic apraxia, and tactile apraxia following an operation for epidural left parietal haematoma. He could neither name nor pantomime the use of objects presented visually or tactually, but correctly performed semantic association tasks, thus demonstrating preserved recognition. He could name and pantomime the use of auditorily presented objects. Experimental results disproved that pantomime disorders were secondary to naming disorders, and suggested that modality specific aphasia and modality specific apraxia are indepe

Dual-comb sensing of hand gesture by wearable FBG arrays demodulation based on a free-running mode-locked fiber laser.

This paper introduces a rapid and accurate wearable hand gesture sensing approach with optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) arrays, interrogated by the dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) technique. By leveraging the asynchronous optical sampling (ASOPS) method, rapid and high-resolution dynamic hand gesture sensing can be achieved. This is facilitated by utilizing a single-cavity dual-comb FBG array demodulation scheme in real-time to monitor single-shot FBG's reflective spectrum, resulting from each finger movement in hand gestures. The proposed sensing system offers a high sensitivity of ∼5 pm/degree

An intelligent fusion-based transfer learning model with artificial protozoa optimiser for enhancing gesture recognition to aid visually impaired people.

Generally, the interaction of gestures presents a set of benefits to persons with disabilities, from improving motor, social, and cognitive skills to delivering a secure and controlled atmosphere for engaging in real-world scenarios. Automatic detection methods, such as hand gesture recognition (GR), are among the most active research fields. Hand gestures, particularly in the form of sign language (SL), are one of the effective modes of non-verbal interaction and a stimulating area of research because they can simplify communication and serve as a standard method of communication, employed in

Multi-Mode Hand Gesture-Based VR Locomotion Technique for Intuitive Telemanipulation Viewpoint Control in Tightly Arranged Logistic Environments.

Telemanipulation-based object-side picking with a suction gripper often faces challenges such as occlusion of the target object or the gripper and the need for precise alignment between the suction cup and the object's surface. These issues can significantly affect task success rates in logistics environments. To address these problems, this study proposes a multi-mode hand gesture-based virtual reality (VR) locomotion method to enable intuitive and precise viewpoint control. The system utilizes a head-mounted display (HMD) camera to capture hand skeleton data, which a multi-layer perceptron (
