Effects of Salinity on Gill Ultrastructure of Alligator Gar Atractosteus spatula.

The alligator gar, Atractosteus spatula (Lacépède, 1803), is a euryhaline, bimodal breather, occupying a wide range of habitats. The gills and swim bladder are both respiratory organs, creating a potential trade-off for fish inhabiting saline environments where gills must also be used to facilitate osmo- and ionoregulation. Therefore, to understand whether gill adaptations in alligator gar differ from other euryhaline basal fishes and teleosts, alligator gar were acclimated to fresh water (salinity: 0; n = 5) or saline water (salinity: 20; n = 5) for over 4 weeks and gill ultrastructure and lo…

Deep brain stimulation for Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics and commonly associated with comorbid psychiatric and behavioral symptoms. Medication or behavioral therapies are effective for treating GTS in most cases; however, a proportion of individuals experience treatment-refractory tics. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an invasive surgical therapy reserved for select individuals with severe, treatment-refractory GTS. DBS has been targeted to several brain regions involved in the basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical networks implicated

Risky Impulsive Behavior in Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome.

Background/Objectives: Behavioral disturbances are common in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) and can include risky impulsive behaviors (RIBs), but RIB classification remains unclear. This study aims to define the epidemiology of RIB in GTS and to assess its relationship with tic severity and the prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders. Methods: The study was structured as a cross-sectional registration study, with each patient enrolled into the database during a single clinical visit. The study included 365 participants with GTS (272 males, 74.5%), of whom 278 (76.2%) were children a

A. salmonicida infection inhibits rainbow trout gill mucin production.

The gills are a critical organ and the primary site of colonization with the pathogen Aeromonas salmonicida. They are covered by protective mucus, mainly comprised by the highly glycosylated mucins. The aim of this study was to characterize the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) gill mucus and mucin production during health and colonization with A. salmonicida. Ex vivo imaging of gill mucus demonstrated that it was heterogenous in its glycosylation and organized in strands. Metabolic labelling time-course experiments in vivo revealed that the metabolic label was incorporated into mucins in th…

A neural noise account of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Tics, often preceded by premonitory urges, are the clinical hallmark of Tourette syndrome. They resemble spontaneous movements, but are exaggerated, repetitive and appear misplaced in a given communication context. Given that tics often go unnoticed, it has been suggested that they represent a surplus of action, or motor noise. In this conceptual position paper, we propose that tics and urges, but also patterns of the cognitive profile in Tourette syndrome might be explained by the principle of processing of neural noise and adaptation to it during information processing. We review evidence fo

Dystonic tics in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

CLINICAL RATIONALE FOR THE STUDY: Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a childhood onset disorder characterised by motor and vocal tics. Different types of motor tics may occur in GTS, including dystonic tics (DTs). Although DTs have been recognised as part of GTS symptomatology, little is known about their risk factors or about how often and at what age they appear in affected individuals. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of our study was to investigate lifetime prevalence and clinical correlations of DTs in a Polish cohort of GTS patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a prospective, one-

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome as a paradigmatic neuropsychiatric disorder.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a chronic and complex tic disorder accompanied by specific behavioral problems in the majority of patients. With its multifaceted interplay between motion and emotion, this condition is a paradigmatic example of the science and art of clinical neuropsychiatry. This review article encompasses the clinical phenomenology of motor and vocal tics and associated sensory experiences (premonitory urges), as well as the behavioral spectrum of the most common comorbidities, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder, affective

[Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes and Therapy].

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a chronic neuropsychiatric movement disease with combined motor tics and at least one vocal tic for a minimum period of 1 year. It typically begins in the childhood (under 18 years of age). Most of the patients with Tourette syndrome have comorbidities, which often impair their quality of life more than the tics themselves. There are reported abnormalities in the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical regions as well as in the neurotransmission of dopamine and other neurotransmission systems. Genetic and non genetic factors are discussed. In each patient psychoeducatio

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome in a cohort of deaf people.

We present six patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) who are also deaf. TS has been observed previously, but rarely reported in deaf people, and to date, so called "unusual" phenomenology has been highlighted. TS occurs almost worldwide and in all cultures, and the clinical phenomenology is virtually identical. In our cohort of deaf patients (we suggest another culture) with TS, the phenomenology is the same as in hearing people, and as in all other cultures, with classic motor and vocal/phonic tics, as well as associated phenomena including echo-phenomena, pali-phenomena and rarer

Enhanced habit formation in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Tics are sometimes described as voluntary movements performed in an automatic or habitual way. Here, we addressed the question of balance between goal-directed and habitual behavioural control in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and formally tested the hypothesis of enhanced habit formation in these patients. To this aim, we administered a three-stage instrumental learning paradigm to 17 unmedicated and 17 antipsychotic-medicated patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and matched controls. In the first stage of the task, participants learned stimulus-response-outcome associations. The subs

Quality of life in adults with Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have used standardized QOL instruments to assess the quality of life (QOL) in Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS) patients. This work investigates the QOL of adult GTS patients and examines the relationships between physical and psychological variables and QOL. METHODS: Epidemiological investigation by anonymous national postal survey of QOL of patients of the French Association of Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (AFGTS) aged 16 years or older. The clinical and QOL measures were collected by four questionnaires: a sociodemographic and GTS-related symptoms questionnaire

Impulse-control disorders in gilles de la tourette syndrome.

Impulse-control disorders (ICDs) are more common in clinic populations with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) than in the general population. The clinical phenomenology of ICDs differ between men with GTS (who tend to be externally impulsive) and women with GTS (who tend to be internally impulsive). This article reviews the relevant literature to-date on impulsivity in GTS, with special focus on intermittent, explosive disorder, self-injurious behavior, trichotillomania, and impulsive-compulsive sexual behavior. The medical and legal community should be aware of the full spectrum of organic

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome: the complexities of phenotype and treatment.

Tourette syndrome is a chronic motor and vocal tic disorder, which is common (1%). The aetiology is complex (mostly genetic) and 90% of people have co-morbid psychiatric disorders and reduced quality of life. Management includes reassurance, education, behavioural treatments and medications for tics and psychopathology.

Cost of illness in patients with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

We evaluated the health economic burden of patients with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) in Germany over a 3-month observation period. Direct and indirect costs were evaluated in 200 outpatients with GTS (mean age 35 +/- 11.5 years) in Germany. Patients were recruited from three outpatient departments that specialized in GTS and completed a semi-structured and self-rating interview with questionnaires screening for direct and indirect medical and non-medical costs, health status, depression, amount and severity of symptoms. Costs were obtained from various German medical economic resour

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and deep brain stimulation.

Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS) is characterized by multiple motor and one or more vocal/phonic tics. Psychopathology and co-morbidity occur in approximately 80-90% of clinical cohorts. The most common psychopathologies are attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive behaviours, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety and certain behavioural disorders. In severe GTS patients who are refractory to medication and other therapies, deep brain stimulation (DBS) is investigated. To date there have been some 50-55 patients who have received DBS in 19 centres worldwi
